Twelve months ago, Hannah
Mathiesen headed to her first
Magic Millions Gold Coast
Yearling Sale working as an owner
communications manager for Ciaron Maher
and David Eustace and made a last minute
decision to buy a horse for her family.
Little did she know she would be back the
following year as a Magic Millions 2YO Classic
(RL, 1200m) winning owner.
The Maher and Eustace-trained Away Game
(Snitzel), Mathiesen’s first ever Magic Millions
yearling purchase, was bought in conjunction
with bloodstock agent Kerri Radcliffe at the
Gold Coast sale last year after the pair decided
to band together to try and pick up a horse to
get some Americans involved in.
“When I was working for Ciaron (Maher), I
had been making a list on the side for a horse
that we could get some Americans in on, my
dad included,” Mathiesen told ANZ Bloodstock
News. Continued on page 2>>

MORNING BRIEFING
Long Leaf to standat Rangeview StudKaraka Million 3YO Classic (RL, 1600m)
winner Long Leaf (Fastnet Rock), is expected
to stand at Rangeview Stud in 2020 after he was
reportedly bought by a group of WA breeders.
A winner of four of his 20 starts, Long Leaf
was a NZ$750,000 NZB Premier Yearling Sale
graduate in 2017 after being purchased by BBA
Ireland from the Curraghmore draft. He is out
of the winning mare Frustrating (Stravinsky)
making him a brother to Sacredvista, a winner
in New Zealand and Feelings, who broke her
maiden at Cranbourne on Friday. Rangeview
were dealt a blow last year when their leading
stallion Demerit (Lonhro), the sire of Gimcrack
Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) winner Agent Pippa, had
to be put down after sustaining a fractured
tibia. Morning Briefing page 6 >>

“Kerri Radcliffe had some American
clients too so we decided to try and team up with everyone and buy a well-
bred filly for the group.
“We ended up comparing lists, her (Radcliffe), me and Ciaron, and
coming up with a few fillies that we all liked, then ended up buying her
(Away Game) and it worked out.”
On picking out Away Game from the hundreds of yearlings she had
looked at during sale inspections
Mathiesen said: “She had
everything that we were looking
for really.
“She had the pedigree, she
is a full to a stakes horse and she
is by Snitzel who is a leading sire
down there.
“Physically, she had a huge
walk, was a great mover and had
a big hip and shoulder and she
just was one of the standouts for
us.”
As well as picking up
$1.6 million in prize-money,
Mathiesen and the rest of Away
Game’s connections also landed the $500,000 ladies bonus which is given
to the first four horses home in the 2YO Classic that are owned by an all-
female syndicate.
“Right away we had heard about the bonus and decided to syndicate
with just females instead,” Mathiesen said.
“We got our neighbour’s wife involved because we’ve partnered with
our neighbour before and got my mum involved, my grandma and a few
of my other relatives so we figured it’s better to do it that way and try and
go for the bonus.”
Originally from the US, Mathiesen came over to Australia to further
her knowledge of horse racing.
Her interest and love of the industry began with a volleyball injury.
Mathiesen was recruited to play volleyball at California Polytechnic
State University but ended up getting injured and decided to join the
college’s Thoroughbred Enterprise program, which is where her passion
for horses developed into a career.
When she graduated from college, Mathiesen approached SF
Bloodstock’s Tom Ryan for some advice on the best way of getting the
most experience in the industry she could.
“He (Ryan) said ‘absolutely you should go to Australia, the industry
is just thriving and I think you’ll learn the most there’ so he ended up
putting me in touch with Ciaron (Maher) and thought it would be a good
fit,” Mathiesen said.

CLASSIC YEARLING SALE9 - 11 February 2020, Riverside Stables, Sydney
“I’m young and Ciaron’s known for
having a young up-and-coming type team so Ciaron gave me a shot. I flew
down there a few months later.”
Picking out horses in a sale is no easy task, and bloodstock agents will
tell you it has taken them years to master it but at 22 years old, Mathiesen
has already picked out a Magic Millions 2YO Classic winner, a feat that
hundreds swarm to the Gold Coast to do each January.
It was at her second job in racing, where she worked for Kim Lloyd,
that Mathiesen credits her ability to spot a nice type of horse.
“I worked for Kim Lloyd, he ran a sales company out in California, and
I’d help do the yearling inspections to decide which yearlings made it into
the sale,” Mathiesen said.
“I think that helped me a lot because you’re looking at a wide range of
horses and then seeing what’s successful in the sale and then eventually
on the race track.
“Then I’d worked for Kerri Radcliffe and a handful of other agents so I
think all of that combined (is where I learnt to pick out horses).”
Just 48 hours after Away Game’s win at the Gold Coast, Mathiesen
was back on deck at the Keeneland January Horses Of All Ages Sale in
Kentucky on behalf of her pinhooking syndicate Oakmont Horse Club.
Oakmont Horse Club was founded by Mathiesen and fellow American
Colt Pike, who approached her at the Fasig-Tipton Gulfstream Sale in
March last year with the idea.
“Colt Pike, who had worked at Arrowfield Stud in the past, approached
me and asked if I had any interest in buying weanlings with him at the
sales in Australia,” Mathiesen recalled.
“I’d done a bit of pinhooking in the US before but hadn’t really
considered Australia. We ended up getting a small group together and
bought five or six (weanlings) down there and it ended up going better
than we expected.
“We just continued that in the US and put
together a partnership for the November sale last
year and so far so good.
“The goal is to keep doing the pinhooking
and then put together some racing syndicates
in Australia and the US.”
So far the pair have sold a Fast Anna
(Medaglia d’Oro) colt for US$140,000 at the Fasig-Tipton July Sale,
which they purchased for US$37,000, and turned a US$80,000 Shakin It
Up (Midnight Lute) colt into a US$200,000 pinhook at the Fasig-Tipton
Gulfstream Sale the following year.
Just hours after Away Game’s win in the 2YO Classic on Saturday,
Mathiesen’s Oakmont Horse Club sold a Fastnet Rock (Danehill) colt for
$400,000 to Hawkes Racing at the Magic Millions Gold Coast yearling sale,
after purchasing him from Aquis Farm at the Magic Millions National
Weanling Sale for $300,000.
An avid fan of the Australian bloodstock market, Mathiesen said her
and Pike will continue to buy and sell down under.
“Yes, definitely (we’re going to continue to buy and race in Australia),”
she said.
“We’ve obviously had some success in Australia so we’ll keep doing
that. We’re selling a few pinhooks there this year and then we might try
and pick up a filly or two at the Easter Sale.”
Despite Away Game ticking all the early two-year-old type boxes as a yearling,
Mathiesen never thought “in a million years” that her and her family would be
Magic Millions 2YO Classic-winning owners with their very first Gold Coast
yearling purchase and she admits she is still coming to terms with it.
“I don’t think (the win has sunk in yet), no,” Mathiesen added.
“I’m still a bit in shock from the whole thing. The whole day was just crazy.
“Then flying back right away with no chance for it to really hit me, but
hopefully this week I’ll be able to go through all the replays and articles. It
was pretty crazy.
“My mum and dad and grandparents were there (at the Gold Coast),
my sister had to stay home, but it was special to have them all out there. It
made it a really good day for us.”

Dame Giselle could miss Millennium date
Co-trainer Paul Snowden has warned that Inglis
Millenium (RL, 1200m) favourite Dame Giselle
(I Am Invincible), one of a trio of Inglis Easter
graduates who dominate early betting for the $2
million race, is not certain to take her chance in next
month’s two-year-old feature and is likely to head
towards the Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m)
instead. The filly was yesterday installed as the $6
market leader by TAB bookmakers but would-be
backers have been advised to hold their bets. “I
wouldn’t rule it out completely but it’s not on our
radar,’’ Snowden told Racing NSW. “You won’t see
her step out in a trial for maybe three weeks but she’s
been in the stable and she could trial tomorrow (if
we wanted).’’ Stablemate of Dame Giselle and Inglis
Nursery (RL, 1000m) winner Wild Ruler (Snitzel),
sits on the second line of the betting for the Inglis
Race Day contest on February 8, along with the
Ciaron Maher and David Eustace-trained Cellsabeel
(Hinchinbrook).
Tendon injury sidelines SamadoubtBjorn Baker has revealed that Group 1 winner
Samadoubt (Not A Single Doubt) is set for a
lengthy spell after suffering a tendon injury.
The six-year-old, who beat Happy Clapper
(Teofilo) to win the Winx Stakes (Registered
as Warwick Stakes) (Gr 1, 1400m) at Randwick
last year, had been scheduled to run in a
barrier trial yesterday ahead of an autumn
campaign. "It's unfortunate that Group 1
winning Samadoubt has picked up an injury.
He has been fit, strong & ultra consistent for five
seasons and unfortunately like any elite athlete,
sometimes injuries happen. He'll head out for
an extended break & return when 100%," Baker
said on Twitter. "The injury Samadoubt has
suffered is a strained tendon. He will be treated
intensively over the next few weeks followed by
a long period of rest and rehabilitation. Tendon
injuries are rare in our stable and it's dispiriting
to have happened to such a wonderful horse."
Dalasan to kick-off at CaulfieldAutumn options remain open for star Adelaide
colt Dalasan (Dalakhani) with races in
Melbourne and Sydney under consideration.
Following a gallop with the Chris Bieg-trained
Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) placegetter
Free Of Debt (Unencumbered) at Morphettville
yesterday, co-trainer Leon Macdonald said
the only firm plan was to race at Caulfield
on February 1. "I think he would be suited
by Sydney because he has a habit of laying
in so racing in the opposite direction could
help that," Macdonald said. "The Randwick
Guineas is a week after the Australian Guineas
in Melbourne so he can't do both. But the
Randwick race might be a bit easier than the
Australian Guineas with Alligator Blood and
Super Seth going there. We will work it out
after his first start." Macdonald and his training
partner Andrew Gluyas are pleased with
Dalasan's progress and he will have another
jump-out next week.
Hanseatic tops Freedman juvenile contingentAnthony Freedman believes his best chance of
claiming back-to-back wins in next month's Blue
Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) looks like coming
in the shape of the Godolphin-owned Hanseatic
(Street Boss). The colt sits on the third line of the
betting for next month’s Caulfield Group 1 having
run out an easy winner on debut in the Merson
Cooper Stakes (Listed, 1000m) at Sandown in
November. Freedman, who won the Blue Diamond
with Lyre (Lonhro) last year said: "At this stage it's
probably still Hanseatic. He was impressive when he
won and he's had a good spell since then. He's back
in work and he's nearly ready to run so at this stage
he's the most likely. He'll be nominated for Saturday
week (Blue Diamond Preview), whether we run
or not I'll make that call closer to the race,” he told
Racing.com. "If he doesn't run there he'll definitely
run in the second one (Prelude) and then onto the
Blue Diamond."
Muntaseera on target for DiamondThe Blue Diamond Stakes remains the target for
the Ciaron Maher and David Eustace-trained
Muntaseera (I Am Invincible) after the filly
flashed home to finish second in a 900 metre
barrier trial yesterday at Rosehill. "I've spoken
to the boss and he was very happy with her,"
Eustace said. "He said she had a decent blow.
She's right on track. Her target is the Diamond
and she may well have a run in Sydney and then
come down for the race. That's the most likely
scenario at the moment. We should have a few
runners - Rathlin will go there, so will Tanker
and Ideas Man at this stage."

Tanker impressive ahead of Diamond assaultAdding to Maher and Eustace’s Blue Diamond
assault will be the impressive Debutant Stakes
(Listed, 1000m) winner Tanker (Pride Of
Dubai) who trialled impressively at Sandown
yesterday. “He was really, really good this
morning,” Eustace told Racing.com. “We’ve
just been working without blinkers up until this
point. Blinkers go on and he’s really pinging
the lids and was good and straight and strong
and through the line. Mark (Zahra) was really
impressed by the feel he’s got. He’s right on
track. His condition is great and the plan is to go
one run into the Diamond. He’ll run in the 1100
metre race (Blue Diamond Prelude) two weeks
before and then into the Diamond.”
Currie: Game has Slipper credentialsLuke Currie believes Away Game (Snitzel) is
capable of following up her Magic Millions
2YO Classic (RL, 1200m) win in the Golden
Slipper Stakes. "The way she put them away
was brilliant and I always felt like I was going
to win in the run," Currie told Racing.com.
"Only decent horses can show that run of foot,
especially against the better ones, so there's no
reason why she couldn't run well in a Diamond
or a Slipper. It makes sense to stay up there and
head towards the Slipper. She's improved off
both her first-up run and and her second-up
run so there's no reason why she couldn't do
it again and she doesn't need to be improving
much to be a winning hope in a Golden Slipper."
Kensington option for RoyalLast start Christmas Stakes (Listed, 1200m)
winner All Too Royal (All Too Hard) is likely to
take his chance in Saturday’s Kensington Stakes
(Listed, 1000m) with a small field expected for
the Flemington feature. The five-year-old is
one of seven nominations for the straight-track
sprint and co-trainer David Eustace admits he
and training partner Ciaron Maher are favouring
running. "I think he will go there," Eustace said
yesterday. "He worked well this morning. There
doesn't appear to be many suitable options
around which makes it tricky. He's going very
well, that was a career-best performance for him
first-up, and we couldn't be happier with him."
Pride still to make Napster callJoe Pride will leave it late before deciding
whether Napster (Proisir) joins his team at
Rosehill on Saturday or takes up an alternative
engagement the day before. "Napster is also in
at Canterbury on Friday night over 1250 metres
so I will just see how the fields stack up," Pride
said. "I hope we get rain and I hope the places
that need it most get it. I don't think any of us
will mind racing on a wet track and I think
my horses will handle it although we haven't
seen it for so long." Stablemate Royal Witness
(Star Witness) is on target to take his chance in
Saturday’s Benchmark 88 sprint. "This will be
his first go over 1100 metres since I've had him,"
Pride added. "I've kept him to short-course
races so he is going up in grade and distance
which he has to do if he is to proceed through
the grades. It looks like being a hot field so we
will see if he is up to it."
Two for Bull PointA smart debut victory for the Rod Northam-
trained Very Sharp (2 f ex Shamtastic by
Shamardal) at Scone yesterday provided
Kingstar Farm’s sire Bull Point (Fastnet Rock)
with his second winner. Sent off favourite in an
all-aged maiden, Very Sharp took the 900 metre
sprint by a short half head. She is the fourth
winner from four foals to race from winning
mare Shamtastic (Shamardal). A $12,000 Inglis
Scone purchase from the Hillside Farm draft
for R and R Racing, Very Sharp is eligible for
the Inglis Scone Challenge (1100m), a race
Northam has won five times.
Kolding sixth in Rosehill trialKolding (Ocean Park) remains in the mix
for the All-Star Mile (1600m) at Caulfield
on March 14 following a trial at Rosehill
yesterday. The Epsom Handicap (Gr 1,
1600m) and Golden Eagle (1500m) winner
finished sixth behind three-year-old colt
Standout (Exceed And Excel) in the 900 metre
heat having been given an easy time by James
McDonald. The four-year-old is one of eight
possible starters for Chris Waller in the All-
Star Mile with the likes of Funstar (Adelaide),
Kubrick (Shooting To Win) and Mister Sea
Wolf (Amadeus Wolf ) all nominated for the
$5 million race.
Caulfield meeting in doubtOfficials are waiting until 7am this morning
before deciding whether today’s midweek
city twilight meeting at Caulfield and another
fixture at Yarra Valley will go ahead. Caulfield
is scheduled to host an eight-race twilight
meeting with the first race at 3.40pm, while the
eight-race Yarra Valley card has a 1pm start.
Yesterday’s meeting at Werribee was called
off because of smoke haze and hazardous air
quality resulting from the bushfires in NSW and
Victoria.

NEW ZEALAND
Catalyst first, Shark second in Matamata trial
New Zealand 2000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m)
winner Catalyst (Darci Brahma) impressed
when taking out a barrier trial at Matamata
yesterday, getting the better of Cox Plate (Gr
1, 2040m) placegetter Te Akau Shark (Rip Van
Winkle) by two lengths. "I am very happy,"
trainer Clayton Chipperfield said. "We took
the hood off and he put himself right there
and to finish off the way he did with his ears
pricked was very encouraging." The Jamie
Richards-trained Te Akau Shark will begin his
preparation in next month’s BCD Sprint (Gr 1,
1400m) before heading to Sydney, where he is
expected to contest the Queen Elizabeth Stakes
(Gr 1, 2000m) in April. "He lobbed three back
the fence and came up in behind them with
no pressure," Richards said. "It wasn't about
chasing Catalyst or having a race today, it was
just about building fitness and doing the right
thing by the horse. We are pleased with how he
is coming to hand."
Per Incanto steps up for Little AvondaleWith their stallion Per Incanto (Street Cry)
flying high at present, Little Avondale Stud
are eyeing the possibility of a bumper week
at the upcoming National Yearling Sales at
Karaka.
Per Incanto has sired a total of 182 winners from
297 runners, with 14 individual stakes winners
including Shadows Cast, Santa Monica and
Dal Cielo at elite level. “He has eight individual
stakes performers already this season. He
had the Group 1 winners Santa Monica and
Shadows Cast last year, and he’s just kicked on
from there,” Little Avondale’s Sam Williams
said. Per Incanto has 14 yearlings in the
catalogue for Book 1 of the NZB Karaka Yearling
Sale, and Little Avondale will themselves offer
10 of those. “This year is easily Little Avondale’s
biggest draft, and it’s the best line-up of Per
Incanto yearlings we’ve ever taken to Karaka,”
Williams added.
Proud record to uphold at Highden ParkLibby and Sam Bleakley’s Highden Park are
hoping to add to their impressive roll of honour
with their draft of yearlings at Karaka. Their
sale graduates include two-time Hong Kong
Horse of the Year Beauty Generation (Road
To Rock) and Hong Kong Derby (Listed,
2000m) winner Ping Hai Star (Nom De Jeu)
as well as a host of other stakes performers.
“For a farm that’s still pretty young, we’ve had
some great results,” Libby Bleakley said. “We
keep adding to our stream of stakes horses
as well, which is fantastic.” While Highden
Park will present two yearlings in Book 1,
Bleakley was keen to emphasise the quality
of their seven-strong draft in Book 2. “If you
look at what’s happened on the Gold Coast
this week, an Iffraaj topped the Book 2 sale,”
she said. “There are some horses that could
qualify for Book 1, but are better being held
back for Book 2.”
Boys Get Paid to add to Karaka atmosphereThere could be plenty of noise around the
Karaka sale ring on January 28 when the Boys
Get Paid Syndicate’s first foray into selling
thoroughbreds reaches its zenith as colt they
own in partnership with Little Avondale goes
under the hammer. LA’s Sam Williams is
delighted with the progress of the Savabeel
(Zabeel) colt, who is out of the mare Drappier
(Pins) and catalogued as Lot 557. “He’s been
one of the big improvers in our Book 1 draft.
He’s got a great pedigree and pleasingly he’s
developed into a really attractive colt, light
on his feet with many of the attributes of the
good Savabeels,” he said. “I bought into his
mother Drappier because I loved the family,
it’s one of Waikato’s (Studs) best.” The colt’s
second dam Gio has left three stakes winners
and her full-sister Escada is the dam of the
dual Group 1 winners Vision And Power and
Glamour Puss.

Stunning out for redemption in Centenary CupFrankie Lor is confident Mr Stunning (Exceed
And Excel) can exact revenge on Beat The
Clock (Hinchinbrook) when the pair clash in
the Centenary Sprint Cup (Gr 1, 1200m) at Sha
Tin on Sunday. The seven-year-old was denied
a hat-trick of wins in last month’s Hong Kong
Sprint (Gr 1, 1200m) when Beat The Clock sped
to victory and Mr Stunning is out to avenge not
only that defeat but also last year’s Centenary
Sprint Cup when his John Size-trained rival was
a neck too good. “We’ll see him close to his best
in this race – I think he can win,” Lor said. Mr
Stunning’s three-quarter-length defeat when
fourth in the Hong Kong Sprint held plenty of
merit, being only his second run back off an
injury lay-off. “I’ve taken things step-by-step
with him and he improved for each of his two
runs. He had those two runs and after that he
has improved so I’m happy with his form,” Lor
added.
Young guns to square off in Happy Valley finaleEmerging talents Highly Proactive (Coats
Choice) and Snap Fit (Nadeem) are set to
lock horns in the Class 3 Chater Handicap
(1200m) which closes Happy Valley’s nine-
race card tonight. Snap Fit won his first three
starts while Highly Proactive got off the mark
last start at his third attempt, impressing
jockey Karis Teetan. “It was a very tough
win from the outside gate,” Teetan said. “I
think he worked all the way around until the
650-metre mark, then once he caught his
breath he kicked on nicely in the straight and
won a tough race. Not many horses would
have done that, so I’m very pleased with that
win.” Highly Proactive’s task won’t be easy
though, with the Caspar Fownes-trained Snap
Fit out to thwart him under Joao Moreira.
“He’s a very nice horse, Caspar seems to be
very confident in his ability and his potential
as an individual”, Moreira said.

Asmara gone
Asmara (Lear Fan), whose daughter Azmiyna
(Galileo) produced five-time Group 1 winner
The Autumn Sun (Redoute's Choice), has died
peacefully at the age of 27. Bred by the Aga Khan
by sending his Listed-winning mare Anaza
(Darshaan) to Lear Fan (Roberto), Asmara
upheld her brilliant breeding in her racing
career with John Oxx, taking out the Trigo
Stakes (Listed, 1m 2f). The mare also passed on
her talent once retired, producing eight winners
from 11 live foals. Her most notable offspring
was Azamour (Night Shift) who won four times
at Group 1 level including the Irish Champion
Stakes (Gr 1, 1m2f). Asmara produced her last
foal in 2011, an unraced filly by Sea The Stars
(Cape Cross) named Azama, before being
retired from breeding.
First foal for Roaring LionThe first foal from the only crop of ill-fated
European champion Roaring Lion (Kitten’s Joy)
was born on Saturday evening. A colt out of the
mare Counterweight (Azamour) arrived at
Jeffrey and Pheobe Hobby's Brightwalton Stud
in Berkshire. Stud manager Sean Keane said:
“He's a well-made, attractive colt with plenty
of athleticism. He's full of energy and is a joy
to be around. The Hobbys are delighted with
him.” Counterweight was bred and raced by
the famed Ballymacoll Stud and was bought
by Brightwalton Stud for 90,000gns when the
operation dispersed its stock at the Tattersalls
December Breeding-Stock Sale in 2017.

Respected industry figure Jen
Campin hopes to secure a suitable
stallion home for her Group 1
winner Wyndspelle (Iffraaj) who
seeks a second elite-level win in Saturday’s
Thorndon Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) at Trentham.
The catch may be that he is a six-year-old
and the perception, at least in Australia which
Campin sees as his most desirable location,
that he may not be considered “sexy” enough.
It’s not for me to say whether he would be a
desirable stallion prospect or not, but the quest
perhaps raises the perennial question as to
what horses do indeed fit that bill?
Would you be better to stand a Group 1
winner at 1600 metres, who was Group 1 placed
at two and a Guineas winner at three, and who’s
proven his durability and soundness - or a short
course two or three-year-old winner whose
“sexiness” might be defined by the pitch that -
as an investor - you’ll be “out of him” before his
offspring hit the track?
I’ll leave the answer to the stud masters (and
accountants) but these early running sprinters,
untried beyond 1200 metres and three years,
do not fit the profile of any champion stallion
in living memory in Australia - and there’s a
plethora of them at stud.
Pitching an older horse will always be a
tougher sell and the longer term commercial
viability will be determined by the deeds of his
offspring.
However, Campin and fellow owners John
Frew, Shirley Hanna and Neil Randles, could
readily cite the remarkable I Am Invincible
(Invincible Spirit), who raced until a five-year-
old (albeit injury interrupted) and failed to
win at Group 1 level, yet has proven a stallion
sensation at Yarraman Park with a stunning 28
stakes winners last season.

Son of Iffraaj outto earn a spot at stud
Wyndspelle SPORTPIX
| 11 |
“There’s been a level of interest in the
horse,” says Australian-born but New Zealand-
based bloodstock consultant Campin, “a few
people waiting in the wings perhaps to see him
repeat his performance in the Captain Cook
(Stakes).”
Wyndspelle scored decisively in the
Group 1 Captain Cook Stakes at Trentham on
December 7, from Shadows Cast (Per Incanto)
who edged out the son of Iffraaj in last year’s
Thorndon Mile and is likely to re-oppose again
this weekend. That victory came three weeks
before the death of his dam Western Star (High
Chaparral) who succumbed to laminitis.
That was the entire’s breakthrough major
success after six previous Group 1 placings,
including three behind champion mare Melody
Belle (Commands) and one in Australia in the
Cantala Stakes at Flemington.
“It is for others to judge, of course, but I
believe he has the required racetrack record
from being Group 1-placed in the Sistema
(Diamond Stakes) at two to winning the
Waikato Guineas (Gr 2) at three and training on
to be a highly-consistent performer at weight-
for-age level.
“I’ve never had a horse run so many Group
1 placings and then keep bumping into one as
good as Melody Belle. He has a huge heart and
always does his best. He races the way he wants
to race, hunting him up early just doesn’t work
but he can certainly produce a withering finish.
He lowers his whole body and takes off like an
aeroplane,” Campin said.
Wyndspelle has blossomed in the latter part
of his career under the training of Johno Benner
and Hollie Wynyard and responded positively
to being reunited with jockey Jason Waddell in
the Captain Cook Stakes.
Waddell, who was on board Shadows Cast
in last year’s Thorndon Mile, is now “super-
glued” to Wyndspelle according to Campin.
Waddell has won three times on the horse
including the Waikato Guineas. “Jason adores
the horse and his style suits him perfectly,” she
said.
An international campaign, to either the
Dubai Turf in March or the Champions Mile in
Hong Kong in April, has been considered for
Wyndspelle but in the best of racing traditions,
Campin said it would be a case “of one race at a
time” after Saturday’s Thorndon Mile.
“He certainly has the temperament for it
but there are other options at home,” said the
prolific and successful seller to Hong Kong.
Wyndspelle became the 10th Group 1
winner for his sire Iffraaj (Zafonic) and the
fourth to have been bred in New Zealand when
he won at Trentham - following Gingernuts, Jon
Snow and Turn Me Loose.
Iffraaj spent the most recent southern
hemisphere breeding season under the Darley
banner at Haunui Farm in New Zealand and
will stand the northern hemisphere season at
Dalham Hall Stud in Newmarket.
Darley also has his sons Ribchester and
Jungle Cat, whose wins included the Group
1 Rupert Clarke Stakes at Caulfield, standing
at Kildangan Stud in Ireland; while in New
Zealand, Windsor Park is standing Turn Me
Loose; Clearview Park has Jon Snow and
Cambridge has grand-son Almanzor (Wotton
Bassett) but I’m unaware of any son of Iffraaj
standing in Australia.
Wyndspelle was a $75,000 Campin
purchase from the Hallmark Stud draft at the
2015 Karaka National Yearling Sale.

Lindsey Smith has pulled off
a remarkable training feat by
managing to rejuvenate the
once retired Black Heart Bart
(Blackfriars) to win his sixth Group 1 race and

years on from his first victory in the Caulfield
feature.
Western Australian Smith took over the
Warrnambool stables once owned by Black
Heart Bart’s disqualified trainer Darren Weir
and was asked by the horse’s owners to attempt
to resurrect the nine-year-old gelding’s career.
Smith conceded that he was not overly
confident that Black Heart Bart would make
it back to the races until an encouraging
Cranbourne barrier trial effort last month.
"Before he trialled I started to doubt, but
then he trialled well," Smith said.
"His first race was good and then his second
run was plain, but we thought getting him up to
the 1800 metres would be good as he wouldn't
be chasing all the time.
"It's a good result." Continued on page 2>>

despite being last and a long way off the leader

the biggest thing was Dwayne didn't panic,"
Hawkes said. "He just saved it to the last little

A surprisingly slow run Melbourne
Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) on Tuesday
turned Australia’s favourite race
into a sprint home that resulted in
the first five horses crossing the line less than
a length apart in a time that was 8.46 seconds
outside of Kingston Rule’s (Secretariat) track
record.
Even allowing for the fact that the race was
run on a soft 5 track, the time was excessively
slow with the leaders clocking a pedestrian
1:44.80 (13.10) for the first 1600 metres.
The final 1600 metres was naturally quicker
but not dramatically so with that distance
covered in 1:40.23 (12.52 200m rate).
The only serious tempo came into the
$7,750,000 race from the 1000 metres with that
final section clocking 59.86 – then 47.13 (last
800m), 35.08 (last 600m) and 23.60 for the final
400 metres.
And in a bumping, keenly contested
finish the Australian-bred Vow And Declare
(Declaration Of War) got the nod by a head
with Prince Of Arran (Shirocco) placed second
and Il Paradiso (Galileo) placed third after the
relegation of Master Of Reality (Frankel) to
fourth.
Next was the appropriately named Surprise
Baby (Shocking), the other local hope who
returned some of the fastest closing sectionals
of the race in coming from 20th to finish (0.9
lengths) fifth.
Surprise Baby ran his last 1000 metres in
57.86, last 800 metres in 45.68, last 600 metres
in 33.79, last 400 metres in 22.77 with his final
200 metres in 11.36.
The winner Vow And Declare, who worked
in the early stages from his wide barrier and
then obtained a perfect trip in third spot under
an inspired Craig Williams-ride, dug deep to
score clocking 59.85 (last 1000m), 46.95 (last

to the front at the home turn and then dashed
clear to defeat her main rival by two and a
quarter lengths in the time of 1:09.89.
California Zimbol’s early sectionals were
very good. Clocked from the 1000 metres, her
200 metre breakdown was: 11.02, 11.25 (400m
in 22.27), 11.83 (600m in 34.10), 11.00 (800m
in 45.10) and 11.25 to give her a fast final 1000
metre time of 56.35.
It was California Zimbol’s fifth race start,
her third win and her first at stakes level. Her
experienced co-trainer Peter Snowden saying
post-race that connections would now target other
fillies’ features over the Melbourne Spring Carnival,
adding that he had always held her in high regard.
Another winner to impress on the watch
at Caulfield was the Godolphin-raced sprinter
Trekking (Street Cry) who gained an eleventh
hour berth into Saturday’s $14 million The
Everest (1200m) by taking out the Schillachi
Stakes (Gr 2, 1100m).
After racing back in seventh place on the
rails, Trekking saved ground closer to the rails
at the home turn, hit the front at the 100 metres
and then battled strongly to defeat the speedy
Ball Of Muscle (Dubawi) by a long neck.
Time for the 1100 metres was a fast 1:02.32
(11.33 200m rate), equivalent to 1200 metres in
1:07.98.
And Trekking’s sectionals were very smart,
his 200 metre breakdown (from the 1000m)
was: 10.71, 10.50 (400m in 21.21), 10.91 (600m
in 32.12) 10.68 (800m in 42.80) and 11.20 for a
fast final 1000 metres of 54.00.
The winner of the Stradbroke Handicap
(Gr 1, 1400m) in June, Trekking is now in
tomorrow’s Everest with a better chance than
his odds might indicate in a very strong field.
In the Ladbrokes Stakes (registered as
Caulfield Stakes) (Gr 1, 2000m) the Irish-bred
import Cape Of Good Hope (Galileo) scored a
narrow but very good win in this Group 1 race at
his Australian debut.
After settling in seventh place, one off the
rails, he got into clear running nearing the 200
metres and then came with a strong late bid to
defeat Black Heart Bart (Blackfriars) by a short
half head in a time of 2:02.51.
The early tempo was not strong with the
first 1400 metres clocking 1:28.17 (12.59 200m
rate) with the final 600 metres in a quick 34.34
(11.44 200m rate).
That resulted in Cape Of Good Hope
returning fast closing sectionals of 33.74 for his
last 600 metres, 22.19 (last 400m) with his final
200 metres in 11.31.
That was a very smart effort especially
considering it was Cape Of Good Hope’s first
start since racing at Saratoga in August.
It should also be pointed out that the lack
of a solid early tempo proved costly for the
favourite Avilius (Pivotal) who faced the task
of making ground from ninth in the sprint
home.
His late-closing (1.7 lengths) fourth was
therefore full of merit with Avilius clocking fast
fractions of 33.68 (last 600m), 22.19 (last 400m)
and 11.28 for his final 200 metres.

The Anthony Freedman-trained
colt Super Seth (Dundeel) really
showed his talent with impressive
closing sectional times in his
exciting burst to grab victory on the post in
Saturday’s Caulfield Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m).
After settling back in eighth place, tracking
a solid tempo, Super Seth arrived in time to
defeat Alligator Blood (All Too Hard), who had
seemingly held a winning break of five lengths
in the straight, by a nose in a time of 1:36.44.
Super Seth returned the fastest closing
sectionals of the race with his last 1200 metres
in 1:10.73, last 1000 metres in 58.55, last 800
metres in 46.32, last 600 metres in 34.23, and
last 400 metres in 22.56.
But the feature of those times was the 200
metres splits for the last 600 metres: 11.66, 11.25
and 11.31, fractions that quickened off a solid
mid-race tempo.
The runner-up, the David Vandyke-
trained Alligator Blood also deserves
acknowledgement.
He tracked the free-running leader
Roccabascerana (Fighting Sun), went to
the front on turning for home, held a clear
advantage at the 200 metres and was only
caught in the last few strides.
Alligator Blood’s early sectionals were
good, in particular his 1000 metre section of
59.56, from the 1400 metres to the 400 metres.
That mid-race pace was telling for the
favourite Dalasan (Dakakhani) who went
forward from his outside barrier (16) and
settled back in third place, without cover,
behind a solid tempo, so his effort in holding on
for (3.7 lengths) fifth was certainly sound under
the circumstances.
However, there was no such tempo in the
Thousand Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m), with the
fillies’ classic turning into a sprint home with
Flit (Medaglia d’Oro) claiming a nose victory
from Missile Mantra (Smart Missile) with
Southbank (Fastnet Rock) a short half head
away third.
Time for the 1600 metres was 1m 37.19,
which was almost three seconds outside of the
track record, after the first 1000 metres clocked a
moderate 1:02.26 (12.45 200m rate) with the last
600 metres in a quick 34.93 (11.64 200m rate).
Subsequently, Flit’s rider Hugh Bowman
said the slow pace almost cost his mount
victory, the filly taking a while to accelerate
when a split finally presented in the latter
stages.
The lack of early pace also told significantly
against the runner-up Missile Mantra whose
racing style again saw the Peter and Paul
Snowden-trained filly settle near last before
flashing home in the dying stages for second.
Missile Mantra returned the fastest closing
sectionals of the race with her last 1000 metres
in 58.88, last 800 metres in 46.24, last 600 metres
in 33.98, last 400 metres in 22.40 with her final
200 metres in 11.46.
Earlier in the day, her stablemate
California Zimbol (I Am Invincible) stamped
her potential with an impressive win over the
well-performed Loving Gaby (I Am Invincible)
in the Thoroughbred Club Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m).

in a keenly contested finish where only a length
separated the first seven at the post.
The winner was the British-bred Chief
Ironside (Lawman) who scored by a short head
from Cliff’s Edge (Canford Cliffs) with Best Of
Days (Azamour) a short head away third in a
time of 1:35.46 (first 1000 metres in 59.41 and
final 600 metres in 36.05).
The runners responsible for the solid tempo
were Dreamforce (Fastnet Rock) who led and
Cliff’s Edge, who raced at his girth, and both did
well considering their early efforts, especially
Cliff’s Edge who fought bravely for second
while Dreamforce was far from disgraced in
finishing (0.7 lengths) fifth.
One to catch the eye in the race was Debt
Agent (Thorn Park), a multiple Group 1 winner
in Singapore who was having his second start
in Australia and he made good late ground for
seventh, beaten only a length.
Debt Agent returned the quickest closing
sectional of the race with his last 1400 metres
in 1:21.64, last 1200 metres in 1:09.90, last 1000
metres in 58.33, last 800 metres in 47.09, last
600 metres in 35.16 and last 400 metres in 24.21.
At Moonee Valley’s Friday night meeting,
the quality filly Loving Gaby (I Am Invincible)
staged a dashing display in taking out the
Manikato Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m).
Having her third run back, she showed
surprisingly good early pace from barrier two
and after almost leading in the early stages,
she settled in third place on the rails, tracking
a solid tempo.
Craig Williams eased her across heels on
turning for home, she then grabbed the lead
on passing the 100m before going on to score
in good style by three-quarters lengths from the
West Australian Vital Silver (Wanted) in a time
of 1:09.29.
Loving Gaby’s early sectionals were
impressive (from the 1000m): 21.21 (first
200m), 32.61 (first 600m), 45.11 (first 800m) and
56.73 for the final 1000 metres.
However, the last word this week goes to
the Jean Dubois-trained filly See You Soon
(Siyouni) who impressed in winning the
Kirkham Plate, for two-year-olds (1000m) at
Randwick on Saturday.
After a slow beginning, See You Soon was last
early on in the six-horse field before dashing home
to score by a short neck from the promising Peter
and Paul Snowden-trained filly Dame Giselle (I
Am Invincible) in the smart time of 57.77.
In a race that developed into a sprint home,
See You Soon showed a sparkling turn of speed,
clocking 32.89 (last 600m) and 21.62 for her
final 400 metres.
And even taking into account the
amount of fast times at Randwick recently,
closing sectionals of that standard are quite
outstanding, especially by a two-year-old filly
who was having her first race start.

The Japanese mare Lys Gracieux
(Heart’s Cry) stamped her class
in no uncertain manner with a
decisive victory in a solidly run
Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m) at Moonee Valley on
Saturday – a performance she endorsed on the
clock.
Having her first start in Australia, Lys
Gracieux settled nicely back in 11th place from
her wide barrier before Damian Lane brought
her into the race with a strong, wide move from
the 600 metres.
Momentarily, the three-year-old colt
Castelvecchio (Dundeel) seemed to have
stolen a winning break, but Lys Gracieux went
to another level when asked by Lane halfway
down the straight, and she immediately put
the race beyond question with a quick final 200
metres in 11.22.
She then went on to win by a length and a
half from Castelvecchio, who ran the race of his
life in taking second with the well-performed
New Zealander Te Akau Shark (Rip Van Winkle)
two lengths away third.
Time for the race was a really smart 2:04.21
(12.17 200m rate), equivalent to 2000 metres
in 2:01.57, and 1.27 seconds outside of Winx’s
outstanding track record of 2:02.94 (12.05 200m
rate) established in 2017.
The genuine tempo was set by the Aidan
O’Brien-trained mare Magic Wand (Galileo)
who led the field under Ryan Moore before
fighting back well for (3.9 lengths) fourth.
Magic Wand’s solid early sections were: 23.46
(first 400m), 35.10 (first 600m), 47.05 (first 800m),
59.43 (first 1000m), 1:11.56 (first 1200m), 1:23.67
(first 1400m) and 1:35.47 for the first 1600 metres
(from the 2000m to the 400m).
Lys Graceieu’s final sectionals were
therefore very good - especially noteworthy was
her final 2000 metre time of 1:59.51 (first 1000
metres in 60.77 and last 1000 metres in 58.74).
The other feature of Lys Graceieu’s
performance was her aforementioned final 200
metres in 11.22, which is very smart considering
she produced that burst when needed, despite
having raced at a solid tempo throughout.
The runner-up, the three-year-old
Castelvecchio also did well on the watch,
clocking 59.53 for his final 1000 metres, so too
the third-placed Te Akau Shark who clocked
58.80, the second quickest last 1000 metres of
the race.
