The Club is still struggling financially and it is important
for all members to join in our efforts to make us
financially viable prior to the proposed merger with
Beaumaris RSL Club
Our next major fundraising event is the 2012 ‐ $1,000

so we encourage you to buy a ticket and come and
enjoy the day.
It is unfortunate that the Bistro has been closed for a
number of weeks. We have interviewed two potential
Chefs but we have not been able to secure anyone; we
are advertising to fill this role.
ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING
The Club’s Annual General Meeting will be held on
Sunday, 1 April, commencing at 11.00 am when a new
Committee will be appointed. This will be followed by
an Extraordinary General Meeting.
Nominations have been called for the positions of
President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer and
committee. You can lodge your nomination on the
board in the foyer. Nominations close on Tuesday,
20 March.
The present Committee has agreed that we need
female representation and encourage any interested
member to seek nomination.
DEVELOPMENT OF BAYSIDE RSL
Peter Lanigan recently met with the State President
who assured him that the Merger Agreement will be
finalised by May 2012 and our campus plans will soon
be ready to submit to them.
The proposed combined Committee will comprise Vice
President, Secretary and Treasurer from our Sub

three committee members.

We are very pleased to announce that the RSL has a
new sponsor – Travelscene Hampton which is
sponsoring the 2012 summer bowling competition.
The total sponsorship is worth $700, and covers the
weekly and the finals prizes. Hampton RSL members

STAFF CHANGES
Following his resignation from his position managing
Hampton RSL, Jay Cooper has agreed to provide
management assistance on a day a week basis for the
immediate future. Jackie Matthews has agreed to an
upgraded position and has been allocated additional
duties around rostering staff, ordering, stocktaking and
functions management.
Committee members have agreed to the allocation of
portfolios through which support will be given to the
staff, including Carole, across the range of duties and
activities within the Club. The future appointment of
any management staff is under currently under review
in the light of the likely formation of the Bayside RSL
Sub‐Branch in the near future.
I trust that all members will give your support to the
staff and their revised duties.
We will be interviewing a new part time Manager next
week.

MARILYN SWIMS IN THE MS AUSTRALIA
24 HOUR MEGA SWIM
RSL member, Marilyn Simmons (who has MS) recently
participated in the Annual MS Mega Swim at the
Fitzroy Pool. These are held to raise money for MS
Australia's “Go for
Gold” scholarship
program.
Go for Gold
Scholarships are
awarded to people
living with MS who
display a great need to
have some a goal or potential wish in various aspects
of life.
Marilyn’s team, called the “MS Floaties” raised $7,000.
The swim took place over a twenty‐four hour period
starting at 6.00 pm on Friday, 24 February and finishing
on Saturday, 25 February. Her financial support from
donations at the RSL ($147.20), the local IGA ($31.05)
and family and friends was over $800, after swimming
800 metres. She enjoys the social as well as the fund
raising aspects of the event. Hopefully, her swim and
financial support will be of the same length and value,
or even better, next year.

LADIES AUXILIARY
Elaine Bencraft has kindly provided the following
historical and current information about the Ladies
Auxiliary.
Our Auxiliary was formed on 1 April 1946. They held
their meetings every two weeks at night. Subscriptions
were 2/6d (twenty‐five cents) with each lady putting
three pence (five cents) towards supper at each
meeting. The Sub‐Branch gave them one pound (two
dollars) to get on their feet and they sold ANZAC
Badges at the Hampton Railway Station.
The meetings had to be held on the verandah of the
RSL Hall as, in those early days, women were not
allowed inside the RSL Hall. This must have been quite
challenging during the winter months, or when it
rained!
Every three months they ran a dance in the old RSL hall
in Hampton Street (which not many people would
remember these days). The men served the coffee.
Dance prizes were cigarettes, chocolates and stockings.
In July they started their annual balls. Prizes were two
nice silver tea strainers which cost 5/8d (fifty‐eight
cents). Ladies decorated the hall with rolls of coloured
crepe paper.
They adopted an English family and sent them food
parcels.
Unfortunately due to our ladies getting older we are
not able to maintain the assistance to the Sub‐Branch
as we have done over many years. Unfortunately we
are now down to only nine members so we need many
new members to keep our Auxiliary going.
The Ladies Auxiliary will be providing sandwiches, tea
and coffee at the conclusion of the “Field of
Remembrance” day on Sunday, 22 April.
SUBSCRIPTIONS
There are still quite a number of members who have
not renewed their membership subscriptions. Please
drop in, or send your subscription to Carole in the RSL
office. If you do not have a subscription form, they can
be obtained at the bar or office.
NEWSLETTER NAME
In the last Newsletter, we provided members with a list
of names for the Newsletter which had been submitted
by members and asked for feedback on which name
was the most appropriate.
We received only two votes and both chose “The
Bugle”. There were two more suggestions:
“Hampton RSL and Community Newsletter”
from Ken Wilkinson; and
“HAMPTON RSL SUB‐BRANCH
THE NEWSLETTER” from Ernest Stargatt
I think it is now up to the Committee to decide.
MEMBERS DRAW
The members draw has not been won for several
weeks and the prize is now $825. Only financial
members are entitled to win, so your subscription is
very important if you want to get this prize.
