Executive Message
Dear Kahila of Agudath Achim,
As we are moving through our first year with Rabbi Rubinstein, we are being rewarded with her
programming, creativity, and her messages. Presently the class on Wednesday evenings that
started last month has been meeting in the social hall, because the library would be too small. It is
a healthy mix of members wanting more clarity on certain topics, non-Jewish spouses wanting to
learn more about what a Jewish family should be like and others on a spiritual journey or just
wanting to know more.
Looking to the month ahead, Purim is in front of us. Monday evening, March 9, we will come
together for a cover dish dinner in the social hall followed by a Megillah reading in the sanctuary.
If you have been in the habit of coming for the meal and fellowship and not staying for what comes
next, you will really be missing out. In between chapters there will be a talent show. Some of our
members have skill sets most of us are not aware of. If you were impressed with the creativity of
the Simchat Torah services a few months ago, what you will see and hear on the 9th will be
awesome! I won’t be the spoiler. Just put it on your calendar and be here.
By now most of you have been in the building to experience the new lighting throughout. Our
renovation is continuing to increase creature comforts and be more energy efficient. The current
items include new fixturing in the rest rooms and new tankless hot water heaters for the kitchen
and rest rooms. The new digital/programmable thermostats in the office and education wing are
up. Currently under study is the addition of natural gas service to install a new gas commercial
stove and oven for the kitchen. With a little luck, it all could happen in time for our community
seder in April. Thank you to all of our members who have raised their dues to set these wheels in
motion. Additionally, we have received a very generous bequest from the estate of Raymond
Murov. We all remember Raymond warmly for his loving spirit, and now for his generosity.
Looking ahead, the board is planning for the next year. A new budget is coming together and a
new slate is bringing new members into the leadership experience. Five or six years ago, some
questioned that we would be here as a congregation at this time. Now we are building, planting,
and preparing for the next chapters.
Regards,
Dave Ginsburg, president

Rabbi Sydni’s Message
When the month of Adar enters, we increase in happiness!
Mi she-nikhnas Adar marbim b’simhah!
We enter March in the midst of the Hebrew month of Adar, bursting with joy just in time for Spring to be sprung. In the Jewish community, we’ll be celebrating the holiday of Purim, a sort of topsy turvy day that commemorates Queen Esther saving the Jewish people with her powerful plea to King Ahashverosh. For Purim this year, our community will enjoy our annual Jewish Federation Purim Carnival at B’nai Zion on Sunday, March 8, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Just the next day, on Monday, March 9, from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m., Agudath Achim will celebrate with a festive meal, a traditional megillah reading, and a talent shpiel. If you’d like to share a talent (poetry, music, juggling, anything!), please let me know. And of course, please come in costume! As a community, we are very clearly following the suggestion of the Rabbis of the Talmud to wholeheartedly enjoy this introduction to Spring.
It’s important to remember, however, that this Purim season is not just about
parties. Traditionally, we follow several different mitzvot in commemoration of Purim. First, we read the megillah, the story of Esther. Her story is a triumphant reminder to let our voices be heard, even the face of danger to our community. In order to share our Purim joy with others, we also perform the mitzvah of matanot la’evyonim; we give gifts of food, clothing, or money to at least two different people in need on Purim day. In another act of sharing, the mitzvah of mishloah manot asks us to give gifts of food to our friends and neighbors. And of course, there’s the mitzvah where the food and partying do come into play - the mitzvah of a Purim meal, complete with laughter and entertainment. This Purim, we will have the opportunity to fulfill all of our mitzvot as a community.
We will, of course, eat a meal and share megillah and entertainment together on
Monday night, March 9. By bringing dishes (dairy or pareve) to the covered dish dinner, you can fulfill two separate obligations to share food with friends. You may also bring drinks to share with adult friends. On Tuesday morning, March 10, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., we will have the opportunity to give gifts to the needy, as we will spend our morning at the Food Bank of Northwest Louisiana. Please RSVP if you’d like to join us!
I look forward to celebrating with you through contributing to both our smaller
and wider community. Through Purim’s acts of sharing, we demonstrate our immense gratitude for still being here, for still being a positive, enthusiastic Jewish people.

Jewish Learning
Exploring Judaism Wednesdays, 7:00 p.m.
March 4 - Shabbat: A Palace in Time
Shabbat is the greatest Jewish invention: a weekly vacation from ordinary time, a chance to unplug from our distractions and reconnect with ourselves and each other. In this class we'll explore the most essential holiday of the Jewish calendar, a day that Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel called "a palace in time."
March 11 - When Do I Bow? And Other Questions About Jewish Prayer
One famous mystic taught that just as important as the black letters on the page are the white spaces that surround them. In this class, we'll explore the meaning and depth behind Jewish spiritual lan-guage, as well as the sometimes confusing choreography and customs of the synagogue.
March 18 - God: Encountering the Holy
Israel literally means "to wrestle with God." In this class, we'll enter into that sacred struggle as we consider the many different paths that Jews take to connect with the Holy One.
March 25 - Talmud: Argument for the Sake of Heaven
After the Bible, our most important set of religious books is made up of nearly 5,000 arguments, of which 99% are left unresolved. In this class, we'll examine the history, ideology, and fierce debates of the Rabbinic Revolution, which continues to shape the Judaism of today.
Our curriculum is sourced from the Miller Intro to Judaism Program, through American Jewish University.

Community Religious School Director As I prepared for last month’s trip to Birmingham, I studied several resources at the Jewish Women’s
Archive (jwa.org). The site has a section called Living the Legacy which uses primary sources and
personal narrative to explore the role of American Jews in the Civil Rights and Labor movements. In one
lesson, the question “What’s Jewish about Justice?” was answered with:
• “We share a communal narrative that reminds us of our enslavement to Pharaoh, and of our
liberations from Egypt. Rather than draw from this memory permission to hate or fear others, we
have learned the lesson of protecting the most vulnerable. Time and again, the Torah reminds is
that our personal experience of being strangers instills in us a responsibility toward those in our
own society who are at risk for discrimination and oppression.”
• “We believe in and work toward a perfected world. From our mystical tradition, we have learned
that human beings have the power to return the world to its original perfection. Even in the
darkest of days, we maintain faith in our own ability to contribute to the ultimate redemption of
the world.”
Curtis and I traveled with eight Religious School students, and met up with another twenty-three
students and three adults from New Orleans for a weekend spent at Birmingham’s Temple Emanu-El,
the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute, the 16th Street Baptist Church, Kelly Ingram Park, and the
Birmingham Holocaust Education Center.
At the 16 h Street Baptist Church, we heard a story about the stained-glass window mentioned by Alex
Murov and pictured below. Upon hearing of the 1963 bombing, Welsh artist John Petts volunteered his
efforts to help the church rebuild. After returning to Wales, he raised money from his community to
create a new piece of stained-glass art. The image of a dark-skinned Jesus was revolutionary at the time,
and above him is a rainbow representing diversity. The right hand is pushing away hatred and injustice,
and the left hand is open, offering forgiveness.
Here are some of the students’ insights:
• I learned many things this weekend that I would never have learned about otherwise. I learned
about the bomb that killed the four little girls and how that really kick started the civil rights
movement. I also heard from a Holocaust survivor in person for the first time. I’ve heard and
watched many people tell their stories but never in person. The trip made me think about how
much more there was to the civil rights movement than what we are taught in schools and by
other adults. – Gabrielle Miller
• This picture was presented several times in the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute. It was powerful
to see these three people holding hands, standing together and facing everyone else. – Caleb Joseph
• Alex Murov on the 16th Street Baptist Church
What the stain glass picture symbolized encaptivated my interest because it really testified to the saying “a picture is worth a
thousand words.” It encapsulated perfectly what the struggle was for black people.
• Alex Murov regarding hearing a Holocaust survivor:
You could hear the hurt in his voice which made the story he was telling sound that much more real.

Women Rule March!
March is Women’s History Month in the USA, Australia and the United Kingdom.
Mother’s or Mothering Day is celebrated in several countries – Georgia, Ireland, Lebanon,
Gibraltar, and the United Kingdom.
March 8th is International Women’s Day, celebrated in Cambodia, Angola, Russia, Kiribati,
Macedonia, Turkmenistan, Columbia, Italy and Portugal among others. It was originally organized by the Socialist Party
of America in 1909 to commemorate and honor women who took part in the 1908 International Ladies’ Garment Work-
ers Union strike, and it has grown to a day of appreciation and respect for all the social, economic and social accom-
plishments women have achieved.
Oh, and we also have Purim! Not only do we celebrate Queen Esther for saving her people,
us! But we also respect Queen Vashti for standing up to King Ahasuerus which led to Es-
ther’s Queendom.
Hip, Hip Hooray for the Women!

Recently, our tradition has been to announce yahrzeits on the Shabbat of the week before they occur. Now, we will announce yahrzeits on the Shabbat of the week that they occur. For
example, if a yahrzeit is on a Tuesday, it will be announced at Shabbat services on the following Friday and Saturday. If a yahrzeit is on Shabbat, it will be announced on that Shabbat. By
announcing yahrzeits in such a way, we acknowledge that Shabbat is the conclusion, rather than the beginning, of a week. If you have questions about our new yahrzeit procedure, please
contact Rabbi Sydni at [email protected].
