c. 1885
Built in 1885, these two nearly identical brick Greek Revival Commercial buildings add a note _of elegance and refinement to the Central Business District of Havre de Grace. Their pressed brick facades, laid in all stretcher bond, are pointed with very thin, very white mortar joints. Fluted terra cotta keystones are present on the jack arches above the second and thii:d floor windows. Although alterations have been made, the basic classical design of these structures is still apparent.

DESCRIBE THE PRESENT AND ORIGINAL (IF KNOWN) PHYSICAL APPEARANCE
104-110 N. Washington St. is a very handsome, late 19th century Cc. 1885), Greek Revival, detached, Commercial building with space for two shops on the first floor and apartments on the second and third floors. The brick building is three stories high and six bays by two bays wide with a two story addition on the rear. The building, one of two of identical design in the same block, faces east.
The pressed brick facade is laid in all stretcher bond pointed with very thin, very white mortar joints; the flanks and rear are common bond. Tie rods with diamond shaped ends are present in the north and south walls.
Window openings are placed uniformly in the facade. The first floor fenestration and building material have been altered to update the facade. An old photograph (included in this report) shows the building as it was originally. Of particular interest are the two fluted cast iron columns with lotus leaf columns still standing in the south entrance. Tall windows on the second floor have 4/2 double-hung sash while the smaller third floor windows have 2/2 sash. At one time all the windows had louvered shutters. The second and third floor windows have brick flat arches with fluted, terra cotta keystones. There are four entrances on the facade; the two in the center bays added to give front access to the apartments and two shop entrances. Originally the upper apartments were reached from entrances in the sides of the building, now bricked over.
Two small brick chimneys rise from either end of the north and south walls of the building which has a flat roof and a molded brick cornice with a sawtooth edge. The rear addition has a gable roof with two interior end chimneys rising from either end of the ridge at the west end.

STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE
104-110 and 116-118 North Washington Street are handsome examples of late 19th century (c. 1185) commercial buildings with space for two shops on the first floor and apartments on the second and third floors. Built in the Greek Revival style, these two buildings are two of the finest in the Central Business District. The simplicity and restrain of the all stretcher bond facade is emphasized by the use of very thin, very white mortar joints and slightly protruding, fluted, terra cotta keystones above the ·~indows. Their design, scale and the fact that there are two of
hem make these buildings crucial to the appearance of the 100 block of N. Washington St. and the entire C.B.D. They should if possible be carefully restored to their original appearance with the aid of the old photo included in this report. Most of the original features are still present on one or the other of the two buildings.
