GreenBiz, 2015 Kathy Gerwig, VP, Environmental Stewardship Officer
Kaiser Permanente Energy Overview
• Driven by mission to improve health • Health care accounts for 8% of GHG emissions in U.S. • KP uses 1.5 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity/year • 66 percent of KP’s GHG emissions from electricity use
New energy agreements: • 30% GHG emission reduction, 2008-2017 • Half of our electricity in California will be from new
solar and wind installations • Two components: offsite and onsite = 223 megawatts • Cost neutral or cost savings; no down payment
Offsite
• Power Purchase Agreements – 20-year contract with NextEra Energy Resources – 110 megawatts of solar, Riverside County, CA – 43 megawatts of wind, Altamont Pass, Alameda
County, CA
• Generate 590 million kilowatt-hours annually – Equivalent to 82,000 American homes
Onsite • NRG Energy • 70 megawatts of solar • Up to 170 hospitals and California campuses
by the end of 2016
Behind the Deal • Framed by position on climate change
– If greenhouse gas emissions continue to increase, climate change will cause health effects that will directly impact KP’s ability to fulfill our promise of quality affordable care.
• Part of sustainability portfolio: – climate action – water efficiency – landfill diversion – reduce harmful chemicals – sustainable food
• Partners: JLL, Business Renewables Center, Health Care Without Harm
