Kier’s response to the BIM opportunity
• What do we see as the “BIM” opportunity
• What have we done in response?
• Some of the benefits we are seeing?
• A typical project example
• Our next steps

The Benefits of BIM
• Enables better collaboration
• Enables a better understanding of the project
• Exposes many of the issues that can cause delay & inefficiency inc co-ordination
• Enables other processes and tools to be more effective
• Much of the benefit is time related
• Reduces rework, risk and waste and the spent managing poor quality information
BIM will continue to reduce the capital cost as well as enabling further value enhancement of the asset

BIM and
BIM (Better Information Management) is;
• an intelligent 3D set of modelling tools
• that encourages the adoption of collaborative working
• and initiates a flow of data
takes the opportunity of BIM
• Extracts the information from BIM
• to enable lean processes to
• manage the integrated delivery of
• a common source of information that allows
• a right first time approach for the handover
• of a data-rich asset

The Benefits of BIM/ for Kier
• Enabling technology – helps to facilitate integrated collaborative working
and drive data driven whole life project and asset management – better projects
• Facilitates better understanding – drives design into 3D which helps
all parties visualise and understand – less change
• Improves accuracy – use of 3D at 1:1 scale drives out ambiguity & improves
accuracy – less rework
• Provides a single source of truth – data entered once, held centrally
and visible to all – less ambiguity
• Drives lean processes – BIM and Kier BIM drive some of the most efficient
processes saving time and money – saves money and time
• Reduces risk – Programme, co-ordination & accuracy, quantity, understanding - almost all
areas are touched by BIM – more predictable outcome
• Repeatable process – Programme, co-ordination & accuracy, quantity, understanding
- almost all areas are touched by BIM – reduces volatility
• Proactive view of causation v reactive view of outcome – BimXtra allows a more proactive view of the issues that can cause additional cost and delay as
opposed to a reactive view of the outcome that is more commonly found in reporting
• Virtual physical proof of concept – the use of BIM inc 3D co-
ordination and 4D simulation allows virtual physical proof of concept

Rollout
• Leadership - is fundamental
• Vision of what good looks like
• Mandate - helps the engagement
• BIM Implementation Plan - sets the rules
• Directors, Champions, Super Users & Users – spreads the word
• The issues are about behaviour
• The benefits are found in every area
• Struggle to save money on the early projects
• BIM tasks can be seen as costs
• Full project engagement is essential
• The benefits are now coming – helps to create the pull

• Circa £15m D&B High School
• Kier £ being spent
• Use on a CLT frame project to manage builderswork –(vertical & horizontal planes to be addressed)
• Fast programme to provide early access for year 7 – right first time – Sept 2013
Achievements on WPCoEHS
• Fully co-ordinated installation model has allowed the CLT builders-work to be factory cut
• FF&E fully integrated as “mini-BIM”
• We have more collaborative & more interactive working
• Procurement has been undertaken directly from the design schedule output
• Positive subcontractor engagement
• Risk & opportunity re-balanced for all
• Platform enabled proactive project management
• Site continues to engage – mobile access now enabled
• Intelligent asset information will be available for handover
