I was delighted when I was asked to write a few words about Trini Lopez;
however, it’s impossible in the small space allotted here to do justice to
Trim’s talent. "Mr. Modest” (as he’s affectionately called by some of his
close friends) is one of the most versatile and gifted performers I have
ever worked with during my years in this business of entertainment. Trini
can’t be categorized since his is one of those rare talents which does not
lend itself to comparison with anyone else’s. He truly has a style of his
own, and yet has the flexibility to handle any phase of the pop field. The
warmth and sincerity that he projects in a soft, sweet ballad is just as real
and honest as the excitement he creates in the more raucous hand-clap¬
ping, foot-stomping numbers that you’ll hear in this album.
But regardless of the tempo, the really unbelievable thing about Trini is
the way he can spark and mold an audience so that after only a few bars
they feel very much a part of the performance. DON COSTA

" Popular Demand” is right. Like his fabulous first for Reprise, for which I got
lucky and wrote the liner notes, Trini’s new elpee swings raucously with all
that good old-time Lopez audience participation fervor. But with a difference.
Trini has zoomed to best-sellerdom and, along with his new starring status, has
achieved the confidence of a star. You can hear it in every groove, especially
in that WOWful "Oh, Lonesome Me” and in "Go Into the Mountains” and
in the one he wrote himself, "Yeah.”
You can also see it when he performs. Trini’s idol is Frank Sinatra, the master
of the cool, confident art of the throw-away. You’ve seen Frank do it: rocket
onto that stage, work like a dog to catch a noisy nightclub audience’s attention
with that big, fast, loud first number and then, when he’s got ’em in his palms,
play it cool till everyone in the joint is afraid to blink his eyes for fear of miss¬
ing a single gesture. Trini is now in the process of mastering that technique too.
Trini’s only 26. God help us all when he gets to be 50. We’ll all be wall-eyed.
Trini owes a lot to P.J.’s, where he first crashed the big time. That’s where he
learned never to goof off. Many’s the performer I’ve seen dog it when he
thought there was "nobody” in his audience —no producer, no director, no
newsman to spread the word that he’s laying down on the job — only the
"regular” customers. I’ve never been able to understand this let’s-take-the-
night-off attitude of so many stars, and big stars too. Why do they bother about
being in SHOW business at all if they don’t SHOW themselves at their best
whether they’re playing a one-shot Carnegie Hall concert in Manhattan or
Monday night at the Elks’ Hall in Mishawaka?
I’ll tell you why I know Trini never goofs off. I went to see him one night at
the Cal Neva Lodge in Lake Tahoe. I didn’t tell him I was coming. I sat ’way
back where he couldn’t see me. Yes, it was one of those deadly Monday nights
that entertainers hate. But not Trini. Trini was performing like it was still that
first fantastic opening night of his at P.J.’s!
Trini was on a try-out kick there in Tahoe, singing the same crazy up-tempo’d
tunes you’ll hear in this equally-as-exciting-as-his-first album: "Corazon de
Melon,” "If You Want to Be Happy,” "Kansas City,” "Walk Right In,” "Green,
Green,” "Goody Goody,” "Never on Sunday,” "Heart of My Heart,” "Lone¬
some Traveler,” etc. Last time out, I picked my favorite. This time I can’t. I
like ’em all.
