Global warmingS2 Chemistry
Materials from the Earth
What is global
warming?
It’s to do with the Earth
heating up and if we don’t do
something about it we’re
all going to die.
Humans are causing it.
It’s caused by carbon dioxide,
which is a very
dangerous gas.
Global warming is the same thing as
the greenhouse effect. They are bad for the planet.
Learning outcomes Success criteriaUnderstand the difference between “global warming” and “the greenhouse effect”.
You can write definitions for “global warming” and “the greenhouse effect”.
You can draw a diagram which shows how the greenhouse effect works.
You can list the three main greenhouse gases in order of their importance.
You can explain whether the greenhouse effect is a good or bad thing.
FactTheory
or Lie?
Water boils at 100C
Plants produce oxygen
Oxygen is the most common gas in the air
The universe started with a Big Bang
The greenhouse effect is a bad thing
The sun takes 365 days to go around the earth
The earth is a sphere
The Earth is getting hotter
Carbon dioxide is causing the Earth to
get hotter
Burning fossil fuels like petrol produces carbon
dioxide
Humans are causing global warming
Global warming will stop if humans stop producing so much carbon dioxide
Global Warming
and
The Greenhouse
Effect
Definitions
• “Global warming”:– the increase in the average temperature of the
Earth.
• Although related, is NOT the same thing as the “Greenhouse Effect”
• “The Greenhouse Effect”:– is ability of the planet to trap heat, caused by
greenhouse gases absorbing heat energy from the sun.
The Greenhouse Effect
Heat travels from the sun to
the Earth
Most of the heat lost back into space
Greenhouse gases trap some of the
heat on Earth
Facts
• It is totally natural
• It is vitally important – it keeps the Earth 20 - 30C warmer than it would be otherwise– Without it life on Earth would not exist
• The media confuse the Greenhouse Effect and Global Warming and often use the terms interchangeably.
• Often they refer only to “Global Warming” when actually they mean the Greenhouse Effect.
Greenhouse Gases
We need them!
Greenhouse Gases
• The most important greenhouse gases (in order) are:– Water vapour (60%)– Carbon dioxide (15%)– Methane– Nitrous oxide– Ozone
• Draw a pie chart to show this information, divided into: “water vapour”, “carbon dioxide” and “other gases”.

In summary…
• Greenhouse Effect – good!
• Global Warming – bad!
