management and telemedicine.

Use Case: Nyakahanga District Hospital
Lutheran Church Hospital, providing, preventive
services and curative services (including: laboratory,
radiology, pharmacy, etc. and outreach
services/clinics). Permanent staff 254 and hospital
capacity is 224 patients’ beds.
Since 2013, the hospital started to use Afya Pro, which
is now completely implemented and covering all
services.
The impact study states: The doctor in charge of
Nyakahanga hospital, together with his board has a
strong positive attitude toward the eHIS AfyaPro.
What it meant in Nyakahanga
• More income, better data, better management and
quality of care. Other benefits:• At the start the staff was computer illiterate, now they are
competent.
• Intransparent/corrupt behaviour replaced by renumeration for
performance.
• Only payment of drugs actual received.
• No confusion on payments (was a big point of unrest in the
community).
• Proper management of stocks and timely re-supply
• Better use of time and capacity.
• An old nurse notes:
“After exposure to the computer through Afya Pro, I decided to learn more and
so I bought my own laptop. My children and husband respect me because I
have learnt to use a computer at my advanced age. We use the laptop at home
and I am able to help my children with the basics”.
• Accurate data is rare
In all participating facilities staff members and managers state that AfyaPro enabled them to have immediate and accurate data. This resulted in better reporting, decision-making, planning and management of the health facility.
And through accurate data, better negotiationwith government is possible.
• Heavy income losses due to
intransparancies/under the counter
payments With Afya Pro the revenues from cash
payments by patients increase by 50- 200%.
• Losses from stocks, no control on staffPharmacy module controls stocks.
Staff performance can be traced.
Less errors in patient files and more time
for treatment improves quality of care.
• Business case: payback between 1-2 years!
The problems solved by Afya Pro also take away main
causes of a poor health system in Africa:
Strong points of AeHS:• Strong international network, exchanging
solutions, best practices, and
programming/implementation capacity;
• Highly interoperable software. Active
collaboration and connecting software of third
parties
• Semi-open source, international exchange of
software solutions
• Blending local development and programming
capacity with the latest technology insights;
• Robust and practical solutions in view of local
circumstances;
• Long track record with succesfull and
sustainable implementations;
• Scientific community to generate best practices
and research on (social) impact
• AeHS is an engine for innovation
