Gateway & Community Partnering Success CEO Instrumental in Bringing SourceHOV Jobs to Ulster County
SourceHOV is a NYSID Preferred Source and Corporate Partner with Gateway Community Industries, Inc. a NYSID Member Agency. Source HOV has opened a new New York location on Boices Lane in the town of Ulster. Suresh Yannamani, President of SourceHOV’s Business Process division stated “We plan a long and successful partnership with Gateway and we appreciated the truly special role that Gateway and Françoise Dunefsky CEO has played in helping us find our newest location in New York.” Source HOV will employ up to 250 employees at the new facility with the capacity for future expansion, the company will provide tax return and remittance processing as well as electronic filing integration services for the New York State department of Taxation and Finance Personal Income Tax program.
Ulster County Executive Michael Hein said Françoise Dunefsky was instrumental in bringing SourceHOV to Ulster County and she received the first Ulster County Executive’s Business Ambassador Award as a result. Françoise Dunefsky stated “I am humbled to be the first recipient of County Executive’s Hein’s Business Ambassador Award. While touched by the recognition, I must accept on behalf of the Gateway Staff. It is our mission to support individuals who face barriers to employment. I am thrilled that people looking for work will find meaningful employment during these difficult times and creating new integrated work opportunities for people with disabilities.
Gateway’s business partner relationship only begins there. Gateway provides training specific to the needs of Hudson Valley employers. Gateway has been instrumental in providing the needed staff at the new SourceHOV facility. Testing and interviews were held at Gateway with both Gateway staff and SourceHOV staff to fill the new positions. Job coaches from the Vocational Training program will be on site for any needed assistance. We hope this step in community partnering will demonstrate to other businesses the varied and competent work force the Mid-Hudson Valley and Ulster County has to offer.
Francoise Dunefsky was presented with the Business Ambassador Award at the Ulster County Chamber Breakfast on Wednesday, February 20, 2013. Ulster County Executive Michael Hein, honored her and said the award is to “recognize somebody who has really exemplified this role of advocacy.” He said, “she cares so deeply about this community that she fought quietly, behind the scenes day after day and she landed SourceHOV and 200+ jobs to our community”. Hein said, “We can’t thank you enough for that.”
Dear Friends, So much has already happened in 2013 and it is only the first half of
the year. The new year started on the foundation of a successful
2012. We have been active participants in the rapid and historic
transformation of the New York State Mental Hygiene System.
Many of our trainees became workers and other progressed to staff. Our New Paltz
Work Center has become Andretta Enterprises, a self-sustaining integrated business,
which competitively hires disabled persons. We continue our partnership with Source
HOV which has hired over 70 disabled workers and we continue to advocate for a full
continuum of employment options for all disabled New Yorkers.
In early May Ulster Gardens Phase 1 was approved by the Division of Housing and
Community Renewal. Gateway Community Industries Inc., is the co-general partner
with Warwick Properties, Inc. for this 82 unit apartment complex serving eligible
seniors, workforce families, and special needs populations. Ground breaking is
scheduled for early August, so plan on reading an update in our Fall issue.
Much more is planned for the Fall. As in the past, the Doug Maloney Memorial Golf
tournament is scheduled for the last Sunday in September. The Black and White Gala
will honor Cheryl Bowers, Christine Hein, and Michael Hein on Saturday November
2nd. We look forward to seeing you there! Thank you for your unwavering support and
advocacy.
Thank you,
Françoise Dunefsky

The Annual Worker Picnic was held on Friday, June 14, 2013 at Gateway. This year
the venue changed, and the theme was a carnival theme. There were many carnival
games inside, as well as activities outside including a home run derby. Carnival
themed snacks of popcorn, sno-cones, and cotton candy were served and a BBQ lunch
was provided by the Gateway Café. Music was provided by BOSS Systems, thank
you Frank Banks for the groovy dance music, it made everyone get up and boogey.
Thank you to our donors, Jay & Laurie Andretta for the monetary donation towards
the picnic, Darcy McCourt and Helen Edelstein for their personal donations, Ulster
Savings Bank for covering the cost of the cotton candy and sno-cone machines, and
Stewarts for the hot dog and hamburger rolls. Thank you to all our volunteers who
made the picnic possible!

Holiday 2012 Events
Day Hab Holiday Mug Auction
Gateway Holiday Dinner
The clients in the Gateway Day Hab program work like
little elves all year, making assorted ceramic pieces for
the yearly annual Holiday Mug Auction which took
place December 10, 2012 through December 17, 2012.
This auction is a silent auction, which means it is
anyone’s game as you can bid everyday of the auction.
Bidders write down their bids and yes, someone can out
bid you. It is a day to day process if there is an item you
have a real interest in. There is a lot of hype by bidders
and dreams of taking home that one special piece.
The auction ended on December 17th at 3:15 with a
flurry of bidders putting in their last minute bids. There
were many smiles and of course some frowns from non
winning bidders. All proceeds go to the Gateway Day
Hab program.
The annual Holiday Dinner was held
on December 12, 2012.The dinner is a
yearly event enjoyed by everyone at
Gateway. The meal consisted of
turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes,
glazed carrots, gravy, cranberry sauce
and pie with ice cream for dessert
(donated by Adirondack Creamery)
thank you so much for the delicious
treat. Thank you to Gateway for this Holiday gift and David
Doyle and the Gateway Café staff for preparing such a
wonderful holiday feast. Many staff members took part in
serving this festive meal which brings joy to all!

The Gateway Foundation held its annual donor recognition event on May 3, 2013 at the Gateway Manor Community
Residence in New Paltz, New York. A delicious lunch was provided by the Gateway Café and our guests were
treated to an Art Show displaying works from Gateway consumers, residents and the Day Hab program. The show
was in honor of a former resident Ralph Johnson who passed away March of 2012. The Foundation takes this
opportunity to show their appreciation for the support of our donors, local businesses and community for gifts given
in the previous year. In 2012 monetary gifts exceeded $74,000. Local businesses were recognized for their in-kind
donations that provides prizes for our events.
Donation amounts are accumulated each year allowing steadfast contributors to move to the next level of
recognition. In 2012 thirty-two contributors moved up at least one level and we received contributions from sixty
new first time donors.
The generosity of our donors has helped the Foundation provide two small annual social events for our consumers
each year, I/T equipment for PROS classrooms, as well as recreational activities for our residents.
For information to become a Gateway donor, please contact Evelyn Flavin (Foundation Manager) at
845-331-1261 ext. 224.

Gateway Foundation Names Honorees for 2013 Black and White Gala
“Sub-Rosa Honor”
The word sub-rosa means “under the rose”.
In ancient times the rose was a symbol of silence
or secrecy and any deed performed “sub-rosa was
not done for the attention of the public.
Our “Sub-Rosa Honor” recognizes individuals who
consistently contributes time and energy to the
vision and mission of our agency choosing to work
“behind the scenes” without public recognition.
The Gateway Foundation is proud to announce that
this years “Sub-Rosa” honorees are
Christine and Michael Hein.
“Lifetime Achievement Award”
The Lifetime Achievement Award is presented to
an individual, individuals, or a business who has
continually contributed to the quality of life in the
Hudson Valley and have had a sustaining impact
on the people we serve at
Gateway Community Industries, Inc.
The Gateway Foundation is proud to announce that
this years honoree for the
“Lifetime Achievement Award”

Congratulations to our 2013 Honorees
Cynthia (Cyndi) has
been at Gateway since
March, 2008 and
started as a part time
residential counselor in
our Gateway Manor
residence. Cyndi
transferred in June, 2008 into a full time
counselor position.
Cyndi was chosen because she is a dedicated
and hardworking employee who is consistently
going above and beyond! Cyndi also helps out
with the much needed shift coverage, plans the
dinner menu monthly, cooks gourmet meals
and assists other staff when needed. She is
loved by both the consumers and staff because
of her infectious positive attitude and always
present smile. Cyndi makes Gateway Manor a

Gateway PROS Program Takes Part in the Great
American Smoke Out, November 15, 2012
The Great American Smoke Out encourages smokers to make a plan
to quit or to plan in advance not to smoke on that day. By quitting,
even for one day, smokers will be taking a step towards a healthier
life. Sally Anderson, on-site RN for Gateway’s PROS program
hosted the first Great American Smoke Out. Each participant signed a
pledge form at he beginning of the day, to at least quit for the day, or
to be the beginning of taking responsibility to improve their health
and wellbeing. Healthy food choices and items to keep them busy
were offered during the day. She also provided the most important
thing to the participants, encouragement, smoking is an addiction
which being dependent upon can be difficult to quit.
Tobacco use remains the single largest
preventable cause of disease and
premature death in the US.
Maiden Lane Hiking Club 2012
The Maiden Lane Hiking Club takes on one challenge, one trail at a time. Teamwork has been the #1 resource that the members have implemented to achieve this goal. The art of hiking with a team is different. Trust is given to each member as each member also reciprocates that trust.
Aishia is one of our strongest hikers. She has yet to hike a trail that she did not want to keep hiking on afterwards. Jason has displayed endurance and a good heart as well as a strong back. Mary has pushed herself to succeed in hiking. Mary has accepted the challenges that the trails give her and has overcome them. Melissa has learned to read a map very well. She has had a map available for all our hikes so far. Paul is an absolute powerhouse and the engine of the hiking club.
The educational aspect of hiking can be tremendous. Exercise and fresh air are two components of hiking that promote a higher level of cardiovascular performance.
While on the hiking trails, the hiking club members learn how to read maps, organize backpacks including water planning and how to use hiking sticks to fit each terrain. The club members have said that the trails have helped them feel closer to nature and helped them to focus.
Goal training has also been implemented into the trails as well as the residence. Future hikes have been separated into a progression system and a maintaining/building system. Compass training will also be an activity we will work on this winter.

May of 2012 David Doyle joined Gateway as
the new Food Service Café and Catering
manager. He has transformed the café menu
into what some would call a gourmet dining
experience. He has added daily specials to
include crab cakes, catfish po’boys, jambalaya
and oven roasted vegetables just to name a
few. He also has added many new and
exciting options to the catering menu.
Every day in the staff lounge you can hear the
buzz over his new dishes. He and his staff also
prepare the Holiday turkey meal for both the
Kingston and New Paltz locations, which the
workers will talk about all year and look
forward to next year.
We can’t wait to see what David has in store
for us
next!
