Gamma Omicron Chapter Issue #1: March 1st, 2014

Big Man on Campus 2014 Winter Wonderland Affair

1

When it comes to domestic violence awareness, men tend to not be as involved as women are against the issue. The Big Man on Campus is a figure of someone who is taking initiative to raise awareness against domestic violence.

2

The winner of Big Man on Campus is someone who is stepping away from the male norm and doing something about it. It only takes one person to step out and make a change, leading others by example.

1

This year’s Big Man on Campus winner is Brian Cedeño! He is a sophomore at the University of Washington, pursuing pre-medicine and majoring in Public Health with a minor in Comparative History of Ideas. Brian does volunteer work with Alshifa at Casa Latina as the undergraduate coordinator, health presentations for El Consulado Mexicano Ventanilla de Salud, research at Seattle Biomedical Research Institute and stays involved as an Interested Men of Lambda Theta Phi Latin Fraternity as activities chair.

2

Special thanks to all the participants: Jarrod Stout, Asa Crawford, Hector Avila, Beto Muñoz, Josue Rios and Brian Cedeño! Congratulations to all the participants for giving their best and an awesome performance in all categories!

The total amount we fundraised for YWCA’s Domestic Violence sector including ticket sales, Dash for Cash monies, and donations is $743.23! Thank you to all who participated, attended, or donated to this year’s Big Man on Campus!

This month we would like to give special recognition to our beloved sister Erica Chavez “L” Spring 2013 Line 9 #6. Erica grew up in Pateros, WA and graduated in 2010. Her parents are agricultural workers and raised 3 kids. She is double majoring in Biology and Public Health. She hopes to become a family physician and work in public health administration. She not only wants to provide primary and prevention care services to underserved communities but also implement programs and policies to cater to their healthcare needs. She always carries herself with a big sonrisa and manages to bring a smile to others around her. Her contagious smile is in every meeting, event, and social gatherings. Her bubbly personality shines through in every occasion! Not only does she portray herself as a team player, but also delivers results!

Ms. Chavez is the definition of excellence as Gamma Omicron Chapter President. She has definitely excelled in maintaining good grades, putting on Big Man on Campus as co-facilitator this January, tying loose ends to our chapter’s new philanthropy, YWCA, and still manages to be a wonderful sister! Erica’s hobbies outside of LTA are working out and drinking coffee. She also enjoys spending time with her family, friends and sisters, shopping, reading and watching movies. For her hard work this year and continuous love to our chapter, we would like thank her! Erica, you are a wonderful blessing to our sisterhood! Love, Your Gamma Omicron Sisters!

They believe that, working together, we can create a community where:

§ All women and families have a safe and stable place to live.

§ All adults are economically self-sufficient.

§ All children and youth develop the skills they need for successful lives.

§ All people live with dignity—free from violence, racism and discrimination.

In the summer of 2013, Gamma Omicron looked at eight different organizations in the Seattle area with the desire to promote the welfare of others through our commitment to the community, specifically targeting women. We chose YWCA because as sisters and as women we felt closely connected with their mission and were impressed the range in services and support they offered women.

YWCA’s mission is to advance the quality of life for women of all ages, races and faiths, and their families. In support of this mission, the YWCA provides services to meet critical needs, promote self-sufficiency, reduce violence, eliminate racism and achieve equal opportunities for all people.
