Term 1 Issue No. 1 10th April 2015
From the Sports Coordinators
Welcome to our first CEA newsletter for 2015. Due to extreme weather conditions (heat) for the first three
weekends in February, a number of sports were cancelled, and therefore once they actually started playing there
were only three or four weeks left for the majority of teams to start and finish their particular sport.
The first XI Cricket team, however, did play each Saturday with three of these games played at an early start of
approximately 8.30am. Once the games started back at the normal time of 11.45am, our 1st XI team posted some
amazing wins. Firstly beating Rostrevor in the annual Intercol, and then going on to defeat Westminster and
PAC in the following weeks.
Both our Badminton teams, despite the limited season, had some fantastic Home and Away wins, with only one
loss between them.
Additionally, as per previous years, our Drive Tennis team has played extremely well defeating a number of
highly ranked Colleges, to possibly finish in fourth place. The Snr C Grade Boys’ Tennis team, despite a limited
season, also played exceptional tennis to win all their games.
Our female athletes have eagerly participated this term in Tennis, Basketball and Water Polo through the
weekly Catholic Girls competition. Our A grade and C grade tennis sides were undefeated while our Open B
water Polo team finished an impressive 2nd place. Our Open A Basketball team had only the one loss for their
season before heading off to Perth to compete in the Australian Marist Basketball competition where they
achieved an impressive second place.
The SHC girls have also been successful on the Athletics track this term taking home 3rd place in the Catholic
Girls Athletics competition at Santos Stadium.
A big thank you to our wonderful staff who coach and manage teams, to all other coaches, umpires and parents
for their commitment and support to the Sacred Heart sports program. Finally a huge thanks and
congratulations to our extremely talented students for their efforts this season – well done.

Athletics
On April the 2nd, the Sacred Heart Girls Athletics Team to
compete in the A grade Catholic Girls Athletics Carnival
at SANTOS stadium. There were numerous successes
throughout the day as the girls put their athletic skills on
the track for all to see.
Georgia Corcoran, Grainne Henry, Sarah Chigwidden,
Sian Badley, Jordana Smith and Sarah Mills hit the 100m
and 200m track with impressive pace. Sarah Chigwidden
took home first place in both the 100m and 200m, while
Georgia took 1st place in the 100m and Sarah Mills 1st
place in the 200m.
While many athletes shy away from the testing 400m race,
this was not the case for our girls. Georgia Corcoran
dominated her 400m taking out 1st place and setting a
new track record in 59.15sec. Sarah Chigwidden also ran
an impressive 400m taking her third 1st place ribbon for
the day, and Jordana Smith achieved a 3rd place.
The field events were well represented with Bec
Allchurch, Gemma Thomas, Tayler Tanner, Rebecca
Thomas and Caitlin Smith hitting the sand in the Long
and Triple Jump. Caitlin was impressive winning the U15
division with a jump of 4.51m. Across at the High Jump,
Imogen Scott, Emily Young and Karina Turek all finished
in 2nd place.
SHC dominated the Shot Put with Emmeline Ogilvie,
Emily Hunter and Bec Allchurch all taking 1st place for
their age division. Bec continued her success across to the
Javelin taking first place with an impressive throw of
24.06m. In the U20 division Sophie Yialas missed 1st place
by 5cm while Zarli Ramsey took out 4th place. In the
Discus, Luana Kidney was impressive taking 1st place
with a throw of 26.1m while Gemma Thomas took 2nd and
Emily Young took home 4th place for their age groups.
3 | P a g e
The distance track saw Sharlyn Burdon step up in the
3000m, 1500m and 800m after injury hit distance runner
Sophie Agostino. A huge effort by Sharlyn covering all
three distances. Emily Hunter also did a great job tackling
the 1000m steeplechase.
To finish the day, our girls combined their sprinting
talents to partake in the relays taking home a 1st in the
Open event and 3rd place in the U16. Perry Routley, Kate
Stewart, Mikayla Tauchert and Chloe Baldwin joined our
previously named sprinters to contribute to an amazing
team effort.
A final invitation race concluded the day. The top 8
athletes from all age groups were selected based on track
times to represent their College for the Championship
100m dash. SHC had an impressive 3 athletes out of 8
qualify for the race. Congratulations to Georgia Corcoran,
Grainne Henry and Sarah Chigwidden (all Yr 11) who
finished 3rd, 5th and 7th respectively.
The girl’s talents and efforts saw SHC earn overall 3rd
place for the day. Well done to all the girls in the team on
this fabulous result. A big thank you to Judy O’Dea and
Marisa Favilla for assisting with the team and to the SHC
students who attended to officiate for the day.

Badminton
Open B Badminton
Badminton in the first Term at Sacred Heart College got off to a slow start as the first three weeks were
abandoned because of extreme weather. Despite this the team still committed to training, (in the heat of
the afternoon), and displayed great enthusiasm for the contest.
Two of the matches were played at the far distant campuses of Rostrevor and St Ignatius, and we were
able to venture there together. This proved to be of benefit with the team members bonding as they
enjoyed each other’s company.
In regard to performance, some of the eight person team were defeated in individual games, however
the team remained undefeated throughout the matches. Games were close, with many going to three
high standard and hard fought sets.
Congratulations to the team and I look forward to working with everyone in Term four.
Warren Wright
Open C Badminton
Due to the inclement weather, there were only three matches (2 home and 1 away) played this Term.
The team members are: Tessa D, Luke F, Shannon G, Lyndon M, Matthew O, James R, Samuel S, Karl U
and Tom V.S.
They managed to win 2 out of the 3 matches. A very good effort and well done.

1st XI Cricket
The 2014/15 cricket season continued on the right path for First XI side with a few confidence boosting wins to
cap off what has been an excellent season.
Our first game of the term was against Pembroke and unfortunately we didn’t begin the way we had hoped with
a close 12 run loss. Harrison Cock chimed in with 53 to get his term off to a good start.
Next we faced St Peters and this was a much better result for the team, securing a 43 run win. Main contributors
were Lachlan Mill with 53 not out and Jayson Bartolo also with a half century.
The next fixture was one to forget, as St Michaels recorded a solid 7 wicket win, which was a big setback for our
St Knockout campaign.
To the boys’ credit, they did not lose another game for the season, finishing with 3 wins in a row over strong
opposition.
The first was our season highlight as we came up against Rostrevor. Being set 206 for victory and on the ropes
early at 3/30, the middle order stood up to help the side record a memorable win. Main contributors were
Lachlan Mill with 63 not out and Liam Mackie (the finisher) with a run a ball 24. Congratulations to Ben James
6 | P a g e
who was awarded the Br Columbanus medal with bowling figures of 2/33 and 53 with the bat. This was a well-
deserved win for the team and reward for their excellent efforts throughout the season.
The boys did not look back from here, posting 250 runs to defeat Westminster (Woolford 61, Bartolo 44) and well
defended by our bowlers, with the pick being Tom Hynes with figures of 3/25 off of 9 overs.
Our final game for the season was against a strong PAC outfit. We have not been victorious over Princes for a
few years now and to finish off with a win was a memorable way to wrap up our season.
Losing yet another toss, Adam Jackson and his team were forced to field first on a perfect Main Oval deck.
Things began well with Tom Hynes and Liam Mackie taking early wickets to put PAC in a spot of bother at 3/23.
From here, they had a solid partnership and were 3/96 and well poised at the 30 over mark. The boys rallied well
in the last session taking 7/64 to restrict PAC to 160. Tom Hynes and Rory O’Driscoll were outstanding with the
ball, both taking 4 wickets.
It was now over to the batsmen and once again, our middle order delivered. In trouble at 3/16, Jayson Bartolo and
Lachy Mill steadied the ship and with a late contribution by the finisher Liam Mackie we were able to get over
the line 6 wickets down with 2 overs to spare. A great way to finish!!!!
Big congratulations to Jayson Bartolo who virtually carried his bat to guide the team to victory, finishing with 84
not out.
Well done to Adam Jackson who led the side exceptionally well, assisted by Pat Kitschke and Tom Hynes. All
players, especially our senior leaders represented the College in a fine manner. Credit goes to each of them for
their excellent contributions throughout the season.
We now look forward to the upcoming 2015/16 season as we farewell our Year 12’s, who played their last game
against PAC. Best wishes to all of them on their future cricketing endeavours.

2nd XI Cricket
Term one was a frustrating end to the 2014/2015 summer, only being able to play 2 games due to heat. However,
when we were able to play, we very competitive, taking on Rostrevor and Westminster.
The second eleven’s first game was Intercol against Rostrevor, at Rostrevor. We had a near loss, chasing 160, with
outstanding performances by Tim Reynolds with 75, and Liam Kerrison taking 2 wickets, the boys fell just short.
The second and last game was against Westminster, at Westminster. Once again, falling short of the total, but a
strong innings by Sam Laube, with 19 runs formed a great base for the run chase, and was close to winning the
game alone. Although, if it wasn’t for Nathan Fussel taking early wickets; knocking over the opening batsmen,
the opposition total may have been much greater.
All in all, the boys showcased the Sacred Heart spirit, and represented the College with great enthusiasm,
showing great initiative with their scoring and having a driven attitude to succeed.
Thank you.
Mark and Sam
3rd XI Cricket
Entering an illustrious sixth year, it was always going to be difficult for the mighty Thirds to reach the same
heights as previous years. The expectations from the SHC community and wider cricketing world were high, as
was evident in the first game against Pembroke when a record-breaking crowd of 5 dads and 1 mum came out to
watch as their sons took the field. Unfortunately, the 6 parents all belonged to Pembroke players. The game
didn’t have the ideal result and unfortunately, Pembroke made light work of us. Nick Brown top scored with the
bat, while Luke Hayes and Aziel Stuart bowled well with the ball. Some highlights from this game include
having to change ovals mid-game due to a scheduling conflict with an Under 7’s battle. Undoubtedly, the
greatest highlight from the game though was Brody Kenny’s terrific catch on the boundary. Unfortunately, Brody
then decided to go for a short jog over the boundary line, awarding them six runs and ultimately losing us the
match. Bad luck Brody.
The next game we eyed off was a battle royale against arch-rivals Rostrevor. Distinctly jealous of our Third XI
cricketing program, they were out for bragging rights. We batted first and Nick Brown once again batted well,
alongside Charlie Lange and Josh Engel. Once again though, the match did not end favourably for us and we
were dismantled cheaply before nearly clinching the game late at the end, thanks to Xavier Redden’s 3 eleventh-
hour wickets. Unfortunately we lost due to a thick edge going for 4 over the slip cordon. Luke Hayes bowled well
once again, and must be commended on smiling after the game. Braden McInerney also bowled well.
Despite the results, the boys continued to show what it is to be part of Sacred Heart College and conducted
themselves extremely well. Thanks particularly to Rob Gill for his hard work and commitment to the Thirds. Also
a big thanks to Nick Brown for his captaincy and leadership on and off the ground.

Year 10A Cricket
This year we once again had a very exciting group of young cricketers enter the College. After our early training
sessions, the coaching staff was eagerly awaiting the first game; however, a series of extremely hot weekends
resulted in the first few games being heated out.
Our first game was a very convincing win over intercollegiate rivals, Rostrevor College. After batting first and
losing early wickets, Captain Brad Rayson and Oscar Lovelock steadied the ship, making 21 and 19 respectively.
Tom Grear came in late in the innings, scoring quickly and adding crucial late runs to pull us to a respectable 100
off our 20 overs. Early wickets from Marcus Thompson and consistent middle over bowling with great support in
the field allowed us to take control of the match. Late wickets from Matt Ramsey secured the win, holding
Rostrevor to just 71.
Following another interruption courtesy of a long weekend and another weather affected match, we took on
Adelaide High School in our final match of the season. Bowling first, Adelaide High got off to a strong start
passing 50 without losing a wicket. Our bowlers fought back hard and with support from the fielders we were
able to keep Adelaide High to just 94 runs off of 24 overs, a special mention must be given to Jack McAuliffe who
took 4/24. Once again, we failed to produce early runs, flailing at 4/16 but showed our determination and fought
our way back into the match. Brad Rayson made a brilliant 51 not out and was well supported by Marcus
Thompson as they managed to chase down the total with wickets and overs to spare.
As coaches, we have been extremely impressed by the amount of boys that have come out to training each
weekend the way the boys have carried themselves both as cricketers and young men. I am very much looking
forward to what these boys will do with their cricket, both at the College and beyond.
Sam Pots & Harry Kitschke
Year 10B Cricket
The 10B Cricket team were only able to complete 2 matches in Term 1, due to weather and scheduling. However,
in both of those games all of the boys were exceptional in the way that they represented the college. In our first
match against Mercedes College, the boys valiantly went down by a few runs chasing Mercedes total of 118. The
top contributor with bat and ball in this fixture was Lewis Cummins taking 2 wickets and scoring a quick-fire 30
runs.
In our second fixture on a juicy green top against Pembroke 10A's, the boys again fell agonisingly short in their
run chase. Having only taken two wickets for the whole innings, the Sacred Heart boys did well in the field to
restrict Pembroke to 124 off of their 26 overs. Nicholas Sullivan batted beautifully; carrying his bat throughout
the innings and remained 29 not out, whilst Will Haarsma provided an explosive and entertaining 35 to keep the
boys alive in the chase. Unfortunately the boys finished on 2/101 off of their 26 overs, falling a few boundaries
short of the required total.
A positive start to the year, and some success is around the corner for the 10B's in term 4.

Swimming
Over the past three years, the combined schools of
Sacred Heart and Marymount, swimming under the
Sacred Heart banner, have fielded an extremely
competitive swimming team, which has seen them
move upwards through the grades from ‘C’ in 2013
to ‘A’ in 2015.
The South Australian Secondary Schools Sports
Association (SASSSA) swimming carnival was held
on 4th March 2015, with 31 Sacred Heart students in
attendance. Individual placings included: six first
placings, six second placings and twelve third
placings. A total of five students were also named
Standard Winners, swimming faster than the average
time expected for their age group.
Stand out swimmers for the evening included
Micaela Habib (SS), Tom Excell, Lachlan Merchant,
Connor Walding, Josh Giles, Noah Gladdy, Scott
Goodwin, Tom Schar (all MS), Amelia Shore, Ella
Nunn and Lauren Reid (MM).
Final team placings saw both the boys and girls
individual teams finish in 6th place (out of 10
schools) and the combined Sacred Heart team finish
in 4th place (out of 6 schools) and hot on the heels of
Pembroke.
All swimmers conducted themselves impeccably and
showed the Sacred Heart Spirit of stepping up,
having a go and giving it your best.

The Sacred Heart College Drive Tennis team has remained in the A1 division for 2014. We have a talented squad
of eight players who have all contributed to a very successful term 1 competition.
The year started off in a remarkable way with the first three rounds postponed due to hot weather. However, we
managed to play 2 of these matches while the third match against St Peter’s College will be played in term 4.
In term 1 we completed 8 matches with 5 wins and 3 losses. The losses to Marryatville High School (ranked #1)
and Prince Alfred College (ranked #2) were not unexpected since they have obliterated all opposition for the past
few years. However, our great hope was to trounce Pembroke (who have been ranked above us for many years)
but we could not quite manage a win on the day losing 3 - 6.
Our wins against all other teams were as expected and our players showed great ability and focus to “do the job”.
11 | P a g e
Matthew Campbell (Captain and #1) has had a formidable task at number 1 playing some of the best young
players in the state. He teamed up with Steve Dawson in the first doubles each week and played entertaining and
skilful tennis that had the crowd applauding.
Nicole Kraemer (#2) is an outstanding tennis player who is focussed and professional in all aspects of the game.
Her unbeaten season is a credit to her and her future opponents will be “shaking in their boots”.
Steve Dawson (#3) is a solid player with good wins in his singles. He is reliable and has a great all-round game.
Jack Conley (#4) has shown great improvement this season with 6 wins and 2 losses.
Joel Broadway (#5) is a very strong player with 7 wins and 1 loss. His technique and hard hitting game is a
pleasure to watch.
Declan Grant and Cooper McRae have all shared #6 position. Both boys have shown great determination and
concentration with their game. The depth of ability in this Drive Tennis team is very strong and will be very
important for the upcoming matches in term 4.
Connor Burley, David Fry and Sam Walker have supported the team at various times during the term and their
contribution has been very important and valuable.
Finally, a very big thank you to all the parents who provide transport, motivation, and camaraderie every match -
their love of tennis is terrific and creates a wonderful atmosphere for our team.

Girls Tennis
SHC again fielded four Girls tennis sides for the
Term 1 season of 2015. With two A grade sides, a B
grade and a C grade side, SHC had all grades
represented and were the only College to field two A
grade teams.
Hot weather hit hard in the first two weeks resulting
in all games cancelled under the hot weather policy.
Games commenced in round 3 with three of the four
SHC sides taking home a win. The A grade SHC1
side continued their success and went through the
season undefeated. Congratulations to team
members Mercedes Sumner, Rebecca Thomas,
Sharlyn Burdon and Molly Digman for their
successful season. Our C grade SHC4 side also went
through undefeated and we congratulate Hannah
Grady, Chelsea Barrett, Georgia Daniel, Tegan Bates,
Phoebe Seal and coach Lindy Leahy for their success.
A huge thank you to the wonderful coaches Ms
Bernadette Thorpe, Ms Amy Noll, Ms Emma Jordan
and Ms Lindy Leah for their weekly commitment to
the girls and SHC tennis. Thank you also to the girls
for their commitment to training and matches and
for the enthusiasm and energy they bought to the
court in the final ‘dress up’ round with SHC1 vs
SHC2 – great organisation Rebecca Thomas!
Look forward to seeing you all on the court again in
Term 4.

Water Polo
Water Polo was again highly participated at SHC for
Term 1 2015. Over 30 girls signed up for the aquatic
sport to field 3 SHC teams. Each Thursday after
school the girls travelled to the Adelaide Aquatic
centre at North Adelaide to compete against a range
of Catholic and Independent schools. A high spirited
College coaster and/or Torago ride proved an
energetic warm up each Thursday with tunes and a
sing along regular features.
Our B grade side under the guidance of Mr Craig
Kelly had a pleasing season against some
challenging opponents losing only 2 matches. After
finishing a pleasing second at the completion of the
final round, they took on a strong St Peters in the
grand final match which confirmed their second
place for the season. A pleasing result in an eight
team competition.
Our two C grade sides, led by Ms Robyn Eaton and
Mr Warren Wright, each recorded a variety of results
throughout the season with both ups and downs. It
was clearly evident as the season progressed that
both teams improved throughout the term. For the
Grand Final the SHC2 and SHC3 sides faced each
other in a high spirited game which saw SHC the
victors! Congratulations to Mr Wrights team taking
home 5th place and Ms Eaton’s team 6th place.
A huge thank you to Robyn, Craig and Warren for
your commitment coaching the girls each week and
transporting them to and from the games. Well done
to all the girls on another successful and highly
spirited season. I look forward to seeing the Yr10 and
Yr 11 girls in the pool again next year.
