automatically appear on your shopping dockets. All you need to do is save those dockets and bring them to school (Woolies have given us a special collection box). You will be able to track our progress on our points barometer poster at school or online at woolworths.com.au/earnandlearn There’s no limit to the number of points we can collect, so your participation will really make a difference. The more points we earn, the more resources we can order! Please bring in your Woolies docket to the collection box right at the entry inside the school office. As of Tuesday, we have earned 158 points. Thank you. Coles Sports for Schools Promotion We are also registered for the Coles Sports for Schools Promotion. According to the original information material from Coles, the program actually starts on Thursday, 11 August but I have heard that it may have started earlier than planned. As yet, we have not received the Coles kit which includes the box for the dockets. There is a temporary Coles box in the office entry for Coles dockets. Thank you. School tree planting day and waste audit Last Friday, our school took part in School Tree Planting Day with the tremendous support of our friends from Bunnings Hardware. The day was a great success and 60 trees were planted in our playground. The school’s Environment Committee worked hard to make sure the day was meaningful to all students and special thanks to Mrs Bolton for her organisation and planning. On Tuesday we took part in an audit of the waste produced at school on Monday. Rubbish from every classroom, playground bin and office was collected on

Tuesday morning and taken to the JHA to be ‘audited’. The school was supported by a team of fantastic helpers from Pittwater Council who spent the day sorting through piles of rubbish! We are waiting on the final result of the audit and will use the data to plan effective waste management strategies. This event was organised by the Environment Committee and successfully managed by Mrs Shanahan. Thank you to all involved. NRMA Gold Medal Challenge for families NRMA Gold Medal Challenge – a NRMA sponsorship of Bicycle NSW to encourage families to safely cycle together. The Challenge is currently open and ends on 16 December 2011. Participants set a goal (between 250 and 2 000km) and then cycle towards it. They receive a gold medal to recognise the attainment of their goal. For more information go to www.mynrma.com.au/challenge To keep cycling a fun and safe activity the NRMA and Bike NSW recommends the following:

Before riding anywhere wear a properly fitted bicycle helmet as a correctly fitted helmet can reduce the risk of head injury by up to 85%.

Wear fluorescent clothing, bright colours or use reflective tape or markings when riding day or night to increase visibility.

If riding on the road watch for parked cars and ride far enough out from the curb to avoid the unexpected like doors opening or cars pulling out.

When using a footpath or shared pedestrian/bicycle path, keep to the left and give way to pedestrians.

Always obey the road rules. Sentences of the Week – Guest class: 3/4S This term 3/4S are focussing on writing information reports. We have been working hard on improving our sentences by ensuring we use adjectives to make our writing more descriptive and interesting to read. We hope you enjoy reading our sentences as much as we have enjoyed constructing them! Bilbies by Natalie Gaul and Carly Abbott: They find these foods by digging with their short, powerful front legs and sniffing with their long pointed nose into rock crevices and soily grounds. Brazilian Wandering Spider by Max Davies-Seale and Mitch Barber: They are large, spindly-looking spiders who have two large eyes and six smaller ones. Sea lions by Skye Kirkland and Eden Miller: Sea lions are amazing creatures because they have a thick layer of blubber under their skin and dense fur covered in oil to make them waterproof. School's National Tree Day Congratulations Narrabeen North PS and thank you Bunnings! School's National Tree Day was a huge success at NNPS last Friday, when we planted over 60 native trees and shrubs in the playground. Each class planted at least 2 trees each and each child planted a vegetable seed in their own take-home pots. How exciting! NNPS would like to sincerely thank Bunnings, Narrabeen for supplying us with all of the equipment for the day as well as four enthusiastic and extremely helpful staff members for the day.

GO GREEN DAY TIN CANS We would like every child from K-2 to bring in 1 tin can (baked bean size approx 400g) to use on Go Green Day as soon as possible. The can needs to have 3 or 4 drainage holes drilled into the bottom of the can as they will be decorated and used as pot plants. The cans can be dropped off into the boxes in the administration building or to your child’s classroom.

Thank you.

HELP NEEDED! The sustainability team at NNPS would be very grateful for any parent help to fix some of our possum boxes. The possum boxes provide alternative shelter for these native animals, rather than nesting in our school's rooves, causing havoc. The students love seeing the adult and baby possums sleeping in their boxes during the day and these experiences demonstrate to our students that humans and native wildlife can live harmoniously. Please see Mrs Bolton (2B classroom - or leave your contact name and number at the office) if you are able to help. Cora Bolton Live Simply so others can Simply Live

Narrabeen North Bush Care Group Working Bee Dear Parents,

If you are interested in volunteering to be a part of our bush care group dedicated to remediating and looking after our precious Caneeung area of the school our next meeting is proposed for Saturday, 6 August from 12 pm to 3 pm. It is suggested you wear a hat, long sleeves and closed in shoes. It would also be great if you could bring along your own gloves, insect repellent and a rake, shovel or trowel if you have one. If you don’t have these items you are still very welcome.

Thank you.

Our third annual K-6 Photo Competition

Please note that all entries should be placed in the gold box in Gail Bateman's office by Monday, 15 August with up to 5 prints, the signed entry form and the $1 entry fee....all in a sealed, clearly labelled (with name and class) plastic bag. Please consider taking your child/children on a special photographic outing during the next 10 days so that they can 'have a go' at this creative and pleasurable life-long pursuit....but remember to save their photos to your hard drive (in a labelled folder) in case they become a finalist in this competition. You'd be surprised at what great photos even some very young kids can take these days with the assistance of light, automatic, digital cameras! The first year there were 30 entries, last year there were 60 (with 20 from Kinder alone)....and I'm hoping for 90 entries this year! The 2 or 3 winners will each receive their photo framed and a trophy at our end-of-year Presentation Day. Last year our three winners came from Kinder, Year 4 and Year 6. I've been explaining a few tips to the children at assemblies. Frame your picture carefully - if the background is 'messy' move the subject or yourself to improve it! It's usually more visually pleasing to photograph odd rather than even numbers of subjects eg. people, kittens, cupcakes, shells! Try getting down low and looking up or getting up high and looking down. Maybe take a photo of what you can see through a hole at the rock pool.....or show perspective by photographing a friend beside the diminishing chain fence at the rock pool. If you're taking a person with the sun behind them you need to put the flash on or they will end up in silhouette with automatic cameras! Think about what subjects will interest others - family and friends, pets, wild animals like pelicans or ducks, people near zoo animals, unusual subjects, usual subjects taken from unusual angles, holiday venues and activities, beach or lake scenes with beautiful lighting eg. early in the morning or at dusk. Remember to frame lake scenes with reeds or trees growing by the water’s edge and remember that you can get great shots at the rock platform eg. look down at the sand and photograph your own shadow below you or take an action shot with a sibling jumping for joy. The colours in the rocks are especially beautiful in the early morning or late afternoon light. Please explain to your child that it makes for a better photo if you don't put the subject slap bang in the middle of the frame - it's more pleasing to the eye if the subject is slightly off centre either to the left or right....technically that's called 'the rule of thirds'. Miss Hartman (photo competition organiser)

ANIMALS MADE FROM VEGETABLES!

Last year the Mona Vale Garden Club invited their members’ children and grandchildren and our school’s students (only) to enter their Spring Flower Show to be held on Saturday, 24 September at the Ted Blackwood Hall. Around thirty of our students presented their fantastic creations with Ashley McEwan becoming the overall winner with her veg-elephant but lots of the other participants received small prizes as well. A separate note will be given to the youngest in your family today re entry and delivery conditions! Last year’s entrants thought this competition was great fun!! The note indicating your child/children will be participating should be returned to Miss Hartman by next Monday, 8 August please.
