NAPLAN (Yr 3, 5 & 7) 14-16 May 2019
School Open Morning Wednesday 29 May 2019
From the Principal
Term 2 Week 2 Newsletter No. 07
10 May 2019
Principal : Mary Ttikirou Deputy: Maria Appelt
Dear Families,
Welcome back to Modbury School for term 2. The students returned
refreshed and ready for what is shaping up to be a very busy term with
many events.
Next week students in year 3, 5
and 7 will be sitting NAPLAN tests.
For many students and their
families this can be a time of
anxiety.
More and more we are hearing about raised anxiety in our society. Dr
Justin Coulson provides some interesting information for parents which
makes for useful thinking for helping children manage ordinary and not so
ordinary life events.
‘It is a myth that we make our children
more resilient by saving them from
themselves and from everything else
around them.
Our children value high levels of
parent involvement. They want
parents in their lives. They want to be
in their parents lives. They require it.
Parental involvement is related to positive life experiences in our children.
They experience elevated feelings of worth, wellbeing and, by default,
resilience. What they do not require is developmentally inappropriate
levels of control. Clearly, when taken to extremes, evidence demonstrates
that too much helicoptering is unhelpful and unhealthy, and may be
harmful.
To build resilience, we need to trust our children can do things on their
own. Then we must give them the space to try. By all means, stand close
and support. But don’t ‘do’. Don’t control. And when they fail, don’t fix.
Instead, console and then ask “What do you think you should do now?”

SAFETY WHEN WALKING TO SCHOOL
PEDESTRIAN CROSSING - GOLDEN GROVE ROAD
We have been made aware of a safety concern regarding the
pedestrian crossings on Golden Grove Road at the front of our
school. Please take extra care when crossing, even when you have
right to cross, some motorists have ignored the red light and
proceeded through the crossing.
On behalf of Governing Council, we have liaised with local
Police who have commenced doing spot checks during peak
times before and after school, to ensure motorists are doing the
right thing. If you witness any incidents, please try to get
information about the vehicle (ie. registration number, make,
model, colour) and report to police on 131 444.
The Department of Transport have also been informed of our safety concerns.

Preschool STEM Learning
In Week 1, Preschool children explored colour. They learnt how mixing two colours made a
new colour. Before they started the children made predictions and came up with some very
interesting ones.
They started with the three primary colours red, blue and yellow. The children each got two
different coloured pieces of playdough and mixed them together with their hands. They were
very excited when the colours changed as they mixed the playdough.
The children discovered that:
yellow and blue = green
red and blue = purple
yellow and red = orange

Dear Parents / Caregivers
Currently we have staff and students who have
auto immune conditions that rely on everyone not
attending school / preschool if they are unwell.
Due to ongoing illnesses that children are
presenting with:
Vomiting
Flu
Gastro
We are reminding parents of your responsibility to
keep your child home if any symptoms appear as
listed in the daily health check attached.
Please consider keeping your child home if they
are not themselves and if other family members
have had illnesses.
Staff will notify you if your child does not appear
themselves health wise and may ask for your child
to be collected early. Staff will ask you to take
your child home if they present to school /
preschool unwell.
It is everyone’s responsibility to stop the spread of
infectious illnesses. Thank you for your
understanding.
Regards,
