Synopsis Inspection of welds is a very important task for
assuring safety and reliability in many industrial
sectors. Radiographic images are needed to make
classification between the defected welds and correct
one. The emphasis of study to develop the method
which is adaptive in nature for feature extraction and
using this adaptive feature the optimal classification is
the outcome of efficient classifier. Automation assists
the radiologist to avoid the disaster because of weld
defects. Inspection of defected parts by certified
expert can be subjective and time consuming and
some types of defects could remain undetected due to
lack of time. In our study some of the most common
defects will be observed for classification purpose from
the radiographic images.

Synopsis Non destructive testing(NDT) plays an important role
in many industrial sectors. The Radiography Testing
(RT) is used in several industries to assess the weld
quality by evaluating the radiographs of the welded
components by a skilled operator. RT can be carried
out using X-rays or a radioactive gamma source.
Defect detection in radiography images has been
studied by several researchers using various
techniques and approaches In this study development
of the method for weld defect detection will be carried

Synopsis
The aim is to develop a distance measurement system using a laser transmitter, laser receiver and a corner reflector. The idea is that a modulated (on-off keying) laser signal is transmitted from using a laser source, and a corner reflector at the target point will reflect it back towards the transmitter and a laser sensor will detect it. Time delay between the transmitted and received signal is measured using phase difference and/or correlation. The time delay is then recorded by a microcontroller and displayed on a screen. The time delay can be measured accurately in analog electronics, and then converted to digital format. The application of this equipment for measuring distance, in throwing events in athletics, will need some additional calculations and angle measurement as required in triangulation.

Synopsis
The aim is to design and implement a hover control system for twin rotor helicopter existed in the lab. The helicopter will be mounted on a flexible vertical metallic rod (lower end of the rod is fixed). Strain gauges mounted of the rod will be used to measure the deflection in the rod hence thrust of the twin rotor system causing this deflection could be measured. The objective of this project is to design and implement a control system to bring the twin rotor system in zero deflection state (hovering condition).

Synopsis As the conventional sources of energy, such as oil and fossil fuels are
decreasing, the world is heading towards an energy crisis. Therefore, scientists and engineers are looking for alternate power resources which include solar energy, wind energy, tidal energy, hydrogen fuel etc. Wind turbines are used to convert the wind energy into electrical power. Fault tolerant control of wind turbines is an active field of research. The first step in fault tolerant control is fault detection and isolation, which is being carried out by a student. Once the faults have detected, the process of fault tolerant control is started. This thesis is focused towards fault tolerant control of wind turbines.

Synopsis Component analysis, defined as the extraction of components that small sub-
images of a given image are made up of, has been a topic of research in signal and image analysis in recent years. Most of the research effort has focused on independent component analysis (ICA) though. The idea of negative correlated component analysis (NCCA), which extracts not only independent components but components that are as negatively correlated to and as far away from each other as possible, was recently developed by some members of Dr Rajpoot’s COMBI research group at Warwick. The main objectives of this project are to develop a software system for NCCA, conduct large-scale experiments on image denoising using NCCA, and do a comparative analysis of the experimental results with other state-of-the-art methods. A good grasp of programming in MATLAB, a keen interest in image processing, and good familiarity with image processing, statistics, and signal processing toolboxes are key pre-requisites for this project. The student undertaking this project will have to achieve the project objectives and write a research paper (aside from writing the dissertation which can be an extended version of the paper) to the satisfaction of both local and foreign supervisors.

Synopsis Researchers understanding the pathology of a disease phenomenon are experiencing a revolution in the way they analyze the human tissue samples at the microscopic level. Digital slide scanners, which are capable of producing microscopic level images of a histopathology slide, are becoming ubiquitous nowadays. A major challenge in processing these images though is the sheer size of these images, approximately 100K x 100K pixel resolution. In a joint research project with researchers at Warwick Medical School, we are embarking on the automatic quantitative analysis of such large-scale images of Natural Killer (NK) cells. The main objectives of this project are to develop a working software system for quantitative analysis of these images. The required analysis may involve detection and segmentation of thousands of individual cells in the images using, but not limited to, novel algorithms developed by Dr Rajpoot’s Bioimage Computing Lab at Warwick. Excellent command of programming in C++ and/or MATLAB, a keen interest in image processing and analysis for biomedical applications, and some familiarity with visual programming (OpenGL) in C++ and/or image processing, statistics, and parallel computing toolboxes are key pre-requisites for this project. The student undertaking this project will have to achieve the project objectives and write a research paper (aside from writing the dissertation which can be an extended version of the paper) to the satisfaction of both local and foreign supervisors.

Synopsis DC servo system available at PIEAS is quite flexible
experimental setup to conduct linear/nonlinear control experiments. The mechanical design of the setup is quite fine, however, the old electronics is not working. This makes such a expensive setup useless. The student will design the electronics hardware for the DC servo system. Furthermore, the student will create interface of the system with computer so that digital control experiments could also be performed.

Synopsis
Wireless communication is growing at a furious pace. Due to steady increase of new wireless
services and standards, single purpose devices with dedicated hardware resources can no
longer meet the user’s needs. It is also expensive to upgrade and maintain a wireless system
each time a new standard comes into existence. A feasible solution to make communication
systems more flexible and user friendly can be achieved through the Software Defined Radio
(SDR) concept. Software defined radio refers to the class of reprogrammable or
reconfigurable radios in which the same piece of hardware can perform different functions at
different times.
In this project, a multi-standards SDR model will be designed and implemented in FPGA
using Xilinx system generator technique. The goal of this project is to mimic an ideal SDR
based communication system. The developed system will be tested and analyzed by varying
various system parameters.

Synopsis
Many studies have revealed that in the long term, the radio channel resource remains deeply
underutilized during certain periods of time. In a cognitive network, secondary users (SU)
are allowed to operate in licensed bands to primary users (PU) as long as they do not cause
interference to the primary transmissions. Cognitive SU detect and track the unused portions
of spectrum. Spectrum sensing is extremely important to detect existing transmissions and
decide reliably at which frequency and time, the spectral holes are located.
Currently, GA, GP, SVM and ANN based modern optimization techniques are being used
extensively. These optimization techniques solve such problems by performing a direct
search of the best solution among sets of candidates. These techniques evaluate their fitness
according to the objective/s of the problem.

Project Details
Synopsis A structure 3-DOF UAV Hover using three rotors has been designed. Auto
pilot control of roll , pitch, yaw and height are to be the primary features. This projects aims at first developing light weigh dc brushless drives for the 3 brush less motors on the hover and then to design and implement kalman filtering techniques to accurately sense the roll and pith using accelerometers. This work should then be followed by designing simulating and then implementing proper controllers to control roll pith, yaw of the UAV under unconstrained hover conditions. A highly motivated individual with sound understanding in applied electronics, instrumentation, and Applied control is required. Should posses skills in Matlab, C & C51.
