On behalf of the WFTDA Board of Directors, officers, and staff, I am excited to welcome you to the 2018 International WFTDA Playoffs in Atlanta, Georgia.
Once again, the WFTDA will be hosting non-stop, nail-biting games and teams from all around the world in a truly dynamic show of athleticism, drive, and passion for the sport of roller derby. As we witnessed last year, anything can happen!
We believe roller derby can bring people together in ways that are real, strong, athletic, and revolutionary and this is evident in how the love of flat track has grown globally. We believe that this community of sport can impact individuals, cities, countries, and the world in so many positive ways.
We know our community of fans, announcers, skaters, coaches, photographers, volunteers, and officials puts in countless hours for flat track derby because they believe that roller derby makes us all stronger and better for being a part of this great game.
Take the time to say hi and thanks to our amazing hosts Atlanta Rollergirls and all of their volunteers: without them, none of this would be possible.
Enjoy your time in amazing Atlanta and we’ll see y’all trackside!

vot The Pivot is the Blocker that wears
the stripe on their head. They are the only Blocker that is allowed to accept a star pass from the Jammer, thus becoming the new Jammer and gaining the ability to score points.
bloc
ker The Blockers are simultaneously
focused on stopping the opposing Jammer from passing them and assisting their Jammer to pass the opposing team’s Blockers. The pack isformed by the largest group of Blockers with players from each team on the track.
jam
mer Jammers wear a star on their helmets
and are the scoring players for each team. The Jammers attempt to pass the opponents as many times as possible by sprinting around the track and lapping the pack.
Two 15-skater teams play two 30-minute periods. Each period consists of multiple "jams." Each jam is an opportunity for both teams to score points, and ends after 2 minutes or when the Lead Jammer calls off the jam. It is legal for a skater to block opponents with their hips, rear, and shoulders. It is not legal to block to the back, to trip, elbow, or to back talk officials. Players committing illegal actions are penalized 30 seconds and their team plays short for that time.
KEY OFFICIATING SIGNALS
Each team fields 4 Blockers and 1 Jammer. Blockers start anywhere between the Jammer Line and the Pivot Line, 30 feet (9.15 meters) away. Jammers start behind the Jammer Line. Play starts with a single whistle blast.
During the first pass, the first Jammer to pass all skaters in the pack legally is Lead Jammer. Lead Jammer status is signaled by the officials blowing two short whistle blasts and pointing at the Lead Jammer.
In subsequent passes, Jammers earn 1 point for each opposing player they pass legally. The opposing Blockers will try to stop the Jammer, while helping their own Jammer through the pack.

WELCOMEThe Atlanta Rollergirls are proud to welcome the WFTDA Playoffs back to the Dirty South. It’s the birthplace of Martin Luther King, Jr.; the host of the 1996 Olympics; the city where the Biebs got his big break; and the city frequently referred to as the “Hollywood of the South.”
With the hotels and venue so close to the airport, it may be tempting not to venture into town, but when you’re not gathered ‘round the flat track, we encourage you to explore the wealth of things that Atlanta has to offer.
ABOUT USFounded in 2004, the Atlanta Rollergirls (www.atlantarollergirls.com) held their first bout in 2005 in a rink just outside of the city. In 2008, we moved intown and have been bringing this fast-paced, all-female, contact sport to sell-out audiences in Midtown ever since.
As the city’s first and only internationally-competitive women’s flat track roller derby league, we are proud that Atlanta’s league, nearly a decade and a half ago, helped start the modern derby revolution. Atlanta skaters were founding members of the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA).
The Atlanta Rollergirls’ all-star team, the Dirty South Derby Girls, represents the city of Atlanta in national and international competitions. Atlanta’s league has always been skater-owned and operated, and over the past 14 years, it has grown into a strong, vibrant and financially-stable organization with deep roots in the Atlanta metro area. All of our volunteer athletes skate for the love of the game, practicing six to 10 hours per week, donating their time and skills to put on monthly bouts and support our community through charitable work.
Atlanta roller derby offers something for everyone — from the hardcore roller derby aficionado who wants to see nationally competitive teams live in action to the normally sports-phobic novice who is just looking for something fun to do with a date, a social group, or the family. Combining aspects of the traditional sporting event experience, like tailgating, with original innovations such as half-time shows by local bands, indie arts and crafts, and door prizes, Atlanta Rollergirls’ bouts draw an eclectic audience with fun, family-friendly entertainment.

CONCUSSIONS + ROLLER DERBY 101KEEP YOUR HEAD IN THE GAME
What else can you do? 10 ideas to raise awareness
1. Read the WFTDA Risk Management Guidelines and make sure your league is familiar with them. 2. Add the Sport Concussion Assessment Tool 5th Edition (SCAT5) to your medical kit and print it for usage in your league. Knowing when someone should be checked out by the proper medical staff is very important even if you are not comfortable doing an assessment yourself.3. Take the Online Concussion Training for Health Care Providers by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.4. Recruit more Safety Personnel in your league. Not sure what they do? Read the Risk Management Guidelines. 5. Talk about concussions. We don’t talk enough about the hits, the falls, the aftermath, and the (sometimes unclear) long-term effects of brain injuries. Talking about it can empower us d to pull a skater or encourage someone to sit out the rest of the game. 6. Reflect on your own behavior! How do you approach a bad hit or fall? 7. Did you see something happen that makes you think someone might have gotten a concussion? Encourage your teammates, fellow Officials or anyone else you can think of to take a break and get checked out. Let the medics know what you saw.8. Get familiar with the Return to Play protocol in the Risk ManagementGuidelines for yourself and your peers.9. Are you participating at a WFTDA Tournament? Read and sign the Concussion Impact Acknowledgment. 10. Most importantly: Wear a proper-fitting and certified helmet and remind others to adjust/replace their helmet. Helmets should fit snugly and cover the frontal lobe — they should not sit back on the cranium itself. The straps should create a “y” under each earlobe. D

kn

? A concussion assessment should occur shortly after the incident, but the participant may request a short time to rest before being assessed. Participants have the right to refuse to be evaluated and if so, they cannot return to play.In WFTDA sanctioned play, when the minimum standard for concussion assessment is employed (volunteer using the Concussion Recognition Tool), a SINGLE symptom is grounds for removing the participant from further activities. Failure to com-ply with an assessment is grounds for removing the participant from further activities.
REMEMBER the 5 R’s
what the rules SAY ABOUT safety1.2 Teams - Skaters who are injured during play may return to play as long as they are no longer apparently injured or
bleeding. A Skater whose injury alters the flow of the game (examples include a Jam being called, a period clock stoppage,
or a substitue being seated in the Penalty Box) may not participate during the following three jams.
WHAT IS A CONCUSSION? A concussion is a type of traumatic brain injury caused by a bump, blow, or jolt to the head that can change the way your brain normally works. Concussions can also occur from a blow to the body that causes the head to move rapidly back and forth.
CONCUSSION symptoms Concussions can have any one or more of the following symptoms: Positive loss of consciousness (blackout.) Headaches and sensitivity to light. Physical signs (such as nausea, vomiting or unsteadiness.) Impaired brain function (such as confusion.) Abnormal behavior (agitation/aggression.)
Adults typically take longer to show symptoms than children and some symptoms may take several hours to manifest.
