ADDITIONAL MATERIALS Circular knitting needle size 8 (5 mm), 16 in. (40.5 cm) long Double pointed knitting needle size 8 (5 mm), set of 5
GAUGE 18 sts = about 4 in. (10 cm) BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE.
NOTES 1. Hat is worked in one piece in the round, beginning on a circular needle and then
changing to double pointed needles when sts have been sufficiently decreased.2. A ribbed edge is worked, then Hat is worked in St St (in A) and Stripe Garter St
(in B).3. The top of the Hat is shaped with decreases.4. Pom-pom is made separately and then tied to top of Hat.
HAT With circular needle and A, cast on 90 sts. Join, being careful not to twist. Place marker for beginning of rnd.
Ribbed edge Rnd 1: * K1, p1; rep from * to end of rnd. Rep Rnd 1 for ribbed edge until piece measures about 2 1/2 in. (6 cm) from beginning.
Rnds 1-2: With A, knit.

Rnd 3: With B, knit. Rnd 4: With B, purl. Rnds 5-6: With A, knit. Rnds 7-36: Rep Rnds 1-6.
Shape Top of Hat Rnd 1 (Decrease Rnd): *With A, k3, k2tog; rep from * around – you’ll have 72 sts.
Note As you work Rnd 2, change to double pointed needles (by simply knitting onto one double pointed needed at a time) to finish working the top of the Hat.
Rnd 2: With A knit. Rnd 3 (Decrease Rnd): *With B, k2, k2tog; rep from * around – 54 sts. Rnd 4: With B purl. Rnd 5 (Decrease Rnd): *With A, k1, k2tog; rep from * around – 36 sts. Rnds 6 and 8: Rep Rnd 2. Rnd 7 (Decrease Rnd): *With A, k2tog; rep from * around – 18 sts. Rnd 9 (Decrease Rnd): *With A, k2tog; rep from * around – 9 sts.
Cut yarn leaving a long yarn tail. Thread tail into blunt needle and draw through remaining sts. Pull to close opening at top of Hat. Knot securely.
FINISHING With B and following package instructions, make a medium size pom-pom. Tie pom-pom to top of Hat.
Weave in ends.
