SCRIPTURE READINGS FOR SUNDAY, Feb. 16
First Reading: Sirach 15:15-20 Psalm: 119:1-2, 4-5, 17-18, 33-34
Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 2:6-10 Gospel: Matthew 5:17-37
Dear Friends,
“Be What You are and Be at its Best.” S.F.S
There is a story told in India: “In one very poor district, there are
no lights in the streets and in very few of the houses because of
the expense of oil. But, as in all areas of India, there is a temple,
frequented by the poor. The structure is primitive, with a huge
brass chandelier that hangs from the roof and has spaces for one
hundred small lamps. These spaces are empty until those who
come to pray, and worship arrive.
“Each worshipper comes from home carrying a lamp through the
darkened streets and then places the lamp in the chandelier.
Slowly the darkened temple begins to glow with light that builds
and grows stronger. The empty places are noted and those who are
missing are sought out after the service, questioned, given care or
words of comfort, or challenged. Their light is necessary for all to
worship.
In today’s Gospel reading, Jesus says to his disciples, “You are
the light of the world.” The word “you,” from the original Greek,
is plural and this command has been passed down from Jesus’
immediate disciples to us disciples today.
Each or our lights is needed to brighten the world. If we do not
shine brightly, our world, like that of the Indian temple, will
remain darker than it could be. We receive the light of Christ at
baptism. Recall baptisms when a newly baptized child is given a
candle, and we hear, “This child has been enlightened by Christ
and is to walk always as a child of the light.”
How well is our light shining? Is it shining brightly for others to
see, or is it dim right now, or is it unseen under a bushel basket?
Jesus also tells us that we are the salt of the earth. Think of what
salt does to food: it flavors food; it slowly dissolves into the food;
and it can also preserve food.
Jesus calls us to do the same. We are to change the flavor of those
we meet by having our words and actions slowly dissolve into
them. By doing this, we may preserve them for eternal life.
Today’s first reading tells us how we are to be light and salt to the
wider world. We are to “share our bread with the hungry, shelter
the oppressed and homeless, and cloth the naked. Then our light
shall break forth like the dawn.”
Here in our parish, join the Social Ministries or help with
unperishable food to assist the needy in many ways. We are the
salt of the earth! How are we flavoring the world? We are the light
of the world. How brightly are our lights shining?
“Be Blessed and Be a Blessing”
Yours lovingly in Christ & Mary, Fr. R. Mathias MSFS

There will be a labeled canister in our social hall to accept your donations. Checks can be made out to Community Action - Walk for Warmth. Please consider making a donation.
