Giving of the 10 Commandments

Introduction• The Israelites (like
us) were born sinners, unable to please God
• We still think we are able to please God– Israel thought they
could keep the 10 commandments
– People think they can keep the 10 commandments today
• Let’s look at the 10 commandments in the Bible
The Ten Commandments• Where did God give Moses the 10

The first commandment• Exodus 20:3• God should be our only

anyone to share His place as God
– People must not depend on anyone or anything except Him for their needs

• Punishment– Separation from God– We are all guilty of
breaking it
Which one is obeying the first commandment?

• God is the creator– Giver of life– No one has right to take
life from another unless God gives that right

• God judges not just what we do, but what we want to do– He knows our thoughts,
motives– Hebrews 4:13
The seventh commandment• Exodus 20:14• Sin to have sex with
anyone but your spouse
• What does this teach us?
• Punishment: everlasting separation from God
• God knows our thoughts, motives– Matthew 5:27-28– Every sin will be
judged, even lust
The eighth commandment• Exodus 20:15• Never take anything
belonging to someone else

• Even if thief pays back, his sin is still against God

Conclusion• God gave these
