From our President...To all members, friends, and volunteers of the Utah Old Time Fiddlers & Country Music Association: I want to
express great appreciation for all the help and service rendered toward the success of our 2011 State FiddleContest in Richfield. The entire staff worked long, hard hours with little time to even catch a breath. I like to sendpersonal letters of appreciation to all, and will do so when time permits.
Our State Concert Tour, including the Utah State Fair Concert went very well thanks to such good and faithfulparticipation by so many. As soon as time permits, I will give a full report on both state activities. Meanwhile, thank you all for your time, talents, service, and personal monetary expenses.
One of the great privileges in life is to be of service to one another and this is something each of you knows andunderstands. It is a great blessing in my life to belong to such an “Association” and I thank you all for the privilege toserve with you.
- Jarl K. Jacobson

Web Site UpdatesIf you have not been to our website lately, you are
missing a lot! The updated website includes selectedvideos from both fiddle contests. There’s a lot oftalent to be watched, and more is being added as wegain permission from those that were filmed. This is agreat way to learn new songs, as well as demonstrate
to others what our organization does and style ofmusic we play.
The UOTFA will be publishing the 2ndEdition of the Starter Collection of Sheet Musicfeaturing common tunes that our organization routinelyplays at gigs and jams. Thank you to Doug Andersonand June Crosby for all your hard work on thisproject.
Plans are being made to have this music andcorresponding sound files put on the web page tobenefit those who can’t read music, or learn best bylistening. Other organizations have cataloged old-timetunes this way, and it makes for a great preservationof these oral or group traditions as our society movesto more digital formats to record history.
Find us on Facebook! Currently, there aretwo pages, one for the state organization, and one forthe Utah Chapter. We have been announcing updatesto the website on Facebook, so it is a great way to beon top of latest changes if you don’t visit the websitedaily.

Salt Lake ChapterIn July, the Salt Lake Chapter was asked to provide
a patriotic music program for the Sandy Senior Center. We were able to work patriotic songs along with someUtah pioneer songs in with the “standard” gig tunes. Those attending seemed to like the music. It’s great tohave musicians willing to meet these requests. We alsoplayed at some new venues. We played for the 24th ofJuly Parade Preview Party at the South Towne ExpoCenter. We also played for the Utah Council for theBlind. One of our more interesting venues was for award campout up Emigration Canyon (no amplifiedsound is allowed in the camp ground). Along with allthe other gigs for Assisted Living facilities and communityevents, we have had a very musical summer.
In September, the Salt Lake Chapter was pleaseto host the UOTF Summer Social and Jam Sessionwhich culminated with a two hour concert at the UtahState Fair. Lucky for us, we were under cover when asummer rain shower hit ( the listening audience liked thecover too!)
In the tradition of sharing music, talent and friendship,Doug Anderson and June Crosby, with contributionsfrom several UOTF members, have put together a bookof fiddle tunes to be used by UOTF members. The intentis that all members will have a copy and these bookswill be provided by the chapters. Thanks to all for yourefforts in gathering and putting this music together; itwill be a benefit to all of us.
If you are in the Salt Lake area on the 2nd or 4thSaturday and looking for a place to jam come visit us atthe West Valley City Hall (3500 South 2700 West)between 11:00 am and 2:00 pm. We would love haveyou stop by.

Dixie ChapterThe Dixie bunch played at the opening day of the
Annual Peach Days Celebration on September 2nd.We had a good turnout of members.
We also had the pleasure of Jerry and RosemaryPrice from the Richfield Chapter come down and playwith us. Rosemary taught at the Hurricane ElementarySchool at one time.
Peach Days also held a fiddle contest Saturdaythe 3rd, and we had some members participate in it.Karl Allred won first place in the Senior andChampion Division. Al Mott took second in Seniors, and River King was second in the Small Fry Division.
Happy Fiddlin’ - Sherry Adderly
I had the pleasure of being one of the judges at thisyears State Fiddle Contest of which I completelyenjoyed. We had such talented musicians competing inall the divisions. What a treat it was to see so manyyoung people participating. There was about 12 SmallFry, and 15 Junior Juniors. For those of you that didn’tattend, you really missed some fantastic fiddling fromthese kids.
The Jr. Pickers were also wonderful as were all ofthe adults that competed. I really enjoyed theHarmonica Division. Jarl Jacobson and DougAnderson were the only two that competed. They areabout as good as any one I have ever heard.
Lastly, I would like to thank June Crosby forrunning a smooth contest, not an easy job.
Keep Fiddlin’,- Sherry Adderly

Utah State FairWe had a wonderful turnout for the Utah
State Fair, with nearly 30 members in attendance and5 Chapters represented: Dixie, Pahvant, Pioneer, SaltLake and Utah. The two hour concert featuredvocals, two hammered dulcimers, fiddles, banjos, guitars, mandolins, and harmonicas. Jarl Jacobsonplayed a piano piece. Bob Wiley dazzled theaudience when he played two instruments at once, theharmonica and guitar. Carl Boyd amazed theaudience with his vocal train whistle. Skyler Beck andKylie Anderson invited the audience to sing along tothe song “Hallelujah, I’m Ready”.
Harvest HomeOur sheet music sample for this month was
provided by Sherry Adderly, and comes from JayBuckey’s webpage at http://www.jaybuckey.com. Asound file accompanies this tune which can be heardat http://www.jaybuckey.com/mp3/Free%20mp3/Harvest%20Home%20-%20Fiddle.mp3.
There are also files for several instruments andalso with a rhythm only track so you can practice. This web page contains a wealth of tunes that wecommonly play.
During the performance, we received twoheavy rain showers, which increased the audience aspeople sought shelter. The rain took out a tower ofspeakers during the performance, but the audiencedidn’t seem to notice. They remained as enthusiasticas ever. Everyone who performed did an amazing joband they should be congratulated for representing ourorganization well.
