Hydraulic Requirements
The spreader is fitted as standard with two 32cc hydraulic motors running in parallel, requiring an oil flow of 60 l/min @ 2500 psi. For tractors with flows below this amount, it is possible to plumb the motors in a series arrangement. In this setup, 35 l/min will suffice. Two spinner motors running in series. If the two motors are connected in series, flows higher than 35 l/min will cause the extra oil flow to bypass back to the tractor through the built in control valve. The higher the bypass flow, the higher the pressure in the system. To keep the pressures as low as possible keep the flow down to the recommended 35 to 40 l/min. Two spinner motors running in parallel. This option gives the spinners more torque and runs the spinners at lower pressures but the machine would then only operate with a minimum of 60 l/min flow. See the diagram below to change between parallel and series. If the hydraulic flow from the tractor is adjustable, reduce the flow to slightly above the point where the spinners begin to slow.
Coupling the Hydraulics
The pressure hose must be coupled to a high pressure outlet point on the tractors external system. The return hose can be coupled into the same double acting bank using the quick release coupling supplied but can give better performance if plumbed directly back to tank via a large ¾” or 1” dump connection. With the tractor at idle, engage the hydraulics. For most common setups, the right hand spinner should rotate clockwise and the left hand spinner run anticlockwise. Nothing should operate when the hydraulics are reversed. Note: 2501 Orchard, 5001, 6601 and 8301 machines have a reversible spinner circuit fitted as standard so the spinner direction can be reversed if required for bulky material such as mulch or compost. System Gain
This is required when a spreader is first setup on a tractor. It ‘tunes’ the computers response to the tractors hydraulic flow. Note:
Before running the Automatic Gain, ensure all the controlling parameters are correctly preset including decimal point being in the correct place. See page 9 for default settings and how to set them.
The machine needs to be empty
The machine does not need to be moving. Press AUTOMATIC GAIN . You may need to enter a password (this is factory set to 664). Do you need to limit the max channel output during cal? NO Operate the tractor at normal operating revs before pressing . Material will be dispensed during calibration if the machine is loaded.
Fine Tuning the System Gain
The system gain may be fine-tuned through the Channel Setup screen in SETUP Mode. Sometimes nonlinear components in the control channel causes oscillation or sluggishness at certain application rates. To fine tune, decrease the SYSTEM GAIN value slightly if the channel oscillates. Increase the SYSTEM GAIN value if the channel is sluggish.

The typical operating position for field application is AUTO. In this position, ground speed controls the dispersal rate. When ground speed is reduced to zero, all application ceases. The OFF position of the switch inhibits all product flow. Generally, the MANUAL (momentary) position is for applications at very slow speeds (i.e., startup from rest). The ground speed startup value for the MANUAL position is programmable under the ground speed configuration. Note: The controller can be locked into MANUAL by holding the master switch in the MANUAL position and pressing the RIGHT arrow key. The MANUAL position forces the controller to use the manual ground speed, which minimizes system lags when starting up from slow speeds. To exit this condition and return to AUTO mode, the master switch must be turned OFF then back to AUTO.

Parameter Descriptions
1. APPLICATION RATE. Target rate for applying the product. 2. DENSITY. Relative density of the material being applied. It represents the
weight of 1 litre of product. 3. INC/DEC STEP. The desired increment/decrement value to allow the operator
to change the application rate by a specified amount during application (on-the-go) through the field.
4. MINIMUM RATE. Minimum acceptable product application rate the system allows.
5. MAXIMUM RATE. Maximum acceptable product application rate the system allows.
6. SPREADER CONSTANT. This value represents the pulse count produced by the sensor over a given distance (refer to GROUND SPEED CALIBRATION to calculate the constant).
7. MANUAL SPEED. This is an internally generated ground speed rate whenever the Master Switch module switch is held into the MANUAL position. This value may be set to any speed within the delivery capabilities of the system. This speed is also used when GROUND SPEED OVERRIDE is selected from the Manual Overrides screen.
8. MIN OVERRIDE. A minimum ground speed that automatically takes over system control between its set point and the SHUT OFF SPEED set point during slow down conditions.
9. SHUT OFF SPEED. The minimum ground speed allowed before the system ceases operation.
10. NUM OF SECTIONS. The total amount of boom sections used. Maximum of 6 sections.
11. 12V ON. YES indicates that 12V activates the solenoid. NO indicates that grounding activates the solenoid.
12. WIDTH SECTION 1. Spreading width (bout width). 13. DRAG BELT. Type of drag belt delivery system. Dual or Single belt/chain. 14. PRODUCT LEVEL. When ENABLED, the amount of product remaining is
displayed on the PRODUCT LEVEL operate screen. The product level decreases as material is applied. When this is ENABLED the reset level and alarm level values are added to the SETUP menu structure and needs to be set.
15. SYSTEM GAIN. Affects the response of the control valve created by changes in ground speed. The larger the number the faster the response time. In field application, if the valve seems to be moving too rapidly and tends to be oscillating, this number should be lowered. The number may be as low as 1 or smaller but cannot be 0.0. If the valve seems to be moving too slowly, this value should be increased. The starting value is automatically set during Automatic Gain Calibration.

Other settings you may require
Setting Discharge Door Height 5001 / 6601 / 8301
The door is controlled by a separate hydraulic circuit from the floor and spinners; it is
recommended that this circuit is connected to a tractor spool valve that has been adjusted to
provide low flow to reduce speed of movement.
The 5001 – 8301 have 11 positions including fully closed. Preset the opening to as per the table on page 20 depending on the product being spread. A sticker of this chart has been placed on the machine; there is also a copy without annotations at the rear of this manual. Measure the door opening (from top of belt not cleats to bottom of door) and find the matching parameter in the table. Note: If the application rate is very high and the controller displays the error message ‘VALVE FULL OPEN’, increase the opening size but remember to also adjust the parameter to reflect this. Note that the 6601 and 8301 have an optional 2 speed gearbox available to spread high rates when necessary. If the application rate is very fine, you may need to reduce the opening size and adjust the parameter to reflect this.
Remove shaft lock pin, and move collar to control height that door
will open to.
IMPORTANT – It is vital that the machine is operated with the door
opened fully against collar.

Ground Speed Calibration
This is done by driving over a measured 100m straight distance. It will have been factory preset and will only need to be redone if the wheels have been changed or there are operating inaccuracies. Process:
1. Mark out a 100m course that you are able to drive in a straight line with the tractor and attached spreader.
2. Position the tractor and spreader at the start of the pre-marked course
3. Press and select GROUND SPEED by using the blue arrows, press the button. If needed use the green arrows to enter the password (factory preset to 664)
4. Use the blue arrows to select “Start Cal” press the button.
5. The screen will display “Cal in progress” drive the 100m course at approximately 5km/hr without stopping.
6. When you cross the end of the 100m pre-marked course press the button to stop the calibration process.
7. Press the button to accept the value.
Repeat this process twice to check accuracy.
Reducing Hydraulic Oil Heat Buildup
To reduce heat on tractors with adjustable flow hydraulics, follow the method below. 1. Set the tractor hydraulic flow adjustment setting to maximum. 2. Adjust the tractor engine revs to normal operating speed. 3. Adjust the spinners to the correct speed. 4. Lower the hydraulic flow until the spinners begin to lose speed then increase
slightly. Note: The hydraulic flow may need to be increased if the machine is unable to discharge enough product for high application rates. (Discharge door is fully open and controller error reads ‘VALVE FULL OPEN’.)

Spreader manual-January 2017 29
Fine Tuning the Application Rate
If a small application rate error is consistently over or under, fine tuning the Constant number may be required. Typically, small errors result from overall spreader variations. Small consistent errors may be compensated for by adjusting the value of the spreader constant the same percentage as the error. For example, your application rate is set at 1000 kg per ha and over a period of time you discover you are actually spreading 1050 kg per ha (5% too high). This means the spreader constant must be reduced by 5% or lowered to 95% of the original value. If the Spreader Constant is now 1000, the new value is calculated as follows;
Present Spreader Constant x Percent of original target = New Spreader Constant
Therefore: a 5% decrease is 1000 x .95 = 950 If the product application is 5% under applied, the spreader constant requires raising from 100% to 105%. In this case, the number is calculated as follows:
A 5% increase is 1000 x 1.05 = 1050

Measuring Bulk Density of Product
Follow the instructions below for the most accurate way of measuring the bulk density of
products, this is crucial in order to achieve accurate rates of spreading.
Turn scale on by pressing and holding
button marked
Ensure units are in grams (displayed g),
if needed change by pressing the unit
button
Place empty cup on scale and then zero
scale by pressing button marked
Fill the cup with product, ensuring it is
level with the top
Weigh the product
Divide the weight in grams by 1000 to
get the product density.
For example if the cup weighed 1644
grams the density would = 1.64KG/L
A cup weighing 900 grams would =
0.90KG/L
Take 3 samples of product and average
them for best results
Enter density into Dickey John system

Connection of 3rd Party GPS Systems
Coverage Mapping
CONTACT GPS SUPPLIER FOR REQUIRED INPUTS / WIRING INFORMATION
There are 2 possible ways to allow the Giltrap spreader to control turning coverage mapping on
and off within 3rd
party GPS systems. This is via signal voltage or switching:
Signal Voltage
Certain systems require a voltage signaling that the machine is spreading to toggle coverage
mapping on and off. The Giltrap spreader will output a 12v 10mA signal voltage on the red
wire labelled “GPS feed” whenever the belt is turning.
This wire can be directly connected to the relevant input of your GPS system. In certain cases
10mA is not enough to trigger coverage mapping and Giltrap GPS coverage relay (part number
135-4545) will be required to be installed as per below, this will increase the current to a level
capable of triggering coverage. Please install this relay as shown below.
It is possible to allow the Giltrap
spreader to connect to various 3rd
party systems.
This is achieved by connecting in
various ways to the GPS fly lead.
Red wire labelled “P6 GPS”
Black wire labelled “Speed feed”
Blue wire labelled “negative”

Spreader manual-January 2017 41
Switching
Certain systems require a connection to be established between two pins/wires, to do this
connect the Giltrap GPS coverage relay (part number 135-4545) will need to be connected as
shown below
GPS Ground Speed Signal
It is possible to utilise certain GPS systems to provide a ground speed signal, in order to do this
it first must be ascertained if the GPS system is capable of providing a simulated radar output
(this is somewhat of an obsolete standard, but a few systems are still capable of it) the output
should be 28.65 pulses per foot (93.996 pulses per meter) with a frequency of 42Hz per mph
(26.10 Hz per Km/h)
If the GPS unit is capable of supplying this output, then the next steps are:
Disconnect the wheel sensor from the junction board of the fert spreader (you can
completely remove sensor if you want)
Connect the relevant connection of the GPS system to the lead labelled “speed feed” on
the GPS fly lead
Set the ground speed constant in the Dickey John monitor to 5730

Troubleshooting
Problem Cause Solution
System does not operate in AUTO or MANUAL
Programming may be incorrect Be sure the channel is turned on. Also check the operation of the implement switch.
Check Master Switch Module cable and switch
Ensure continuity from the connector and the module is present. Also ensure no shorts between conductors exist. Check the switch for correct operation.
Check main cable wiring Check the wiring between the Master Switch Module and the console. Check for open or shorted conductors.
Check the valve coil
Check for correct voltages and signals to the actuator. Fuse may be blown Check coil plug Check coil
+12 Volts is not present at the actuator
Check the power cable and the 24 pin plugs to the console.
Inadequate hydraulic oil flow. Check for approx. 40-60 l/min or screw in belt override to check belt and spinners can run at good speed.
Belt may be slipping Check belt tension and increase if necessary. The belt may need washing if buildup has occurred.
Faulty rate sensor Check connections to board Check connection of sensor to shaft Check wire for damage
Channel has been set to OFF
Press OPERATE to get into the main operating screen. While in the main operating screen, press ^ to highlight SPREADER and press > button to toggle the channel on.
Spinners are running outside of parameters.
Check spinner setup parameters. If limits are enabled, belt will not run when spinners run outside of limits.
System does not operate in AUTO, only in MANUAL
Check ground speed signal is correctly displayed
If the ground speed indicates on the display, check the switch module and then suspect a faulty console.
No ground speed signal is present
Check wheel sensor cable for damage. Check electronics enclosure for loose connections. Check 7 pin connector between tractor and spreader for loose connections.
No ground speed signal is present on the 7 pin plug, pin 2
Check for continuity between electronics enclosure and 7 pin plug If continuity is absent, check the connections at the enclosure and plug. Check for damaged cable.

Conveyor belt is surging Faulty rate sensor
Check the rate sensor is not rocking back and forth on its mounting. Also check to see the coupling is not slipping on the rate sensor shaft.
Belt may be slipping Increase belt tension
Display console does not turn on
Blown fuse or low/no battery voltage
Check fuse in positive battery harness lead and replace with proper size fuse, if blown. If it blows again, check for a shorted sensor lead or a damage cable. If the fuse is normal, the indication is no current is being drawn. Check all connections to ensure good contacts at the connectors. Inspect the battery connections very carefully and clean contacts as necessary.
Spinner sensor sending Negative signal
Unplug fert spinner sensor from fert loom and use spreader (no spinner RPM) Replace spinner sensor.
Error message cannot be cleared
Damaged sensor or incorrectly installed
Correctly install or repair/replace the sensor.
Sensor not receiving +12 Volts Check for +12 Volts at the sensor. If voltage is not present, check cable for damage or a faulty connection.
Signal line is open or shorted Check the signal wire for continuity or a short from the sensor back to the console.
Application Rate sensor or other sensor is faulty
If the above checks do not reveal the problem, replace the respective sensor.
Short in system
Fuse blows immediately
To isolate the problem, disconnect 7 pin plug and all sensors from PCB board, but not the main power cable. This cable is necessary to supply battery power to the console. Replace the fuse.
Fuse continues to blow
The console or power cable contains the short. Disconnect the cable and check with an ohmmeter. If no short is found in the cable, replace the console.
Fuse no longer blows
After disconnecting all sensors and cables, except power cable and the fuse does not blow, the short is indicated in the disconnected cables or one of the sensors. Turn power off each time you connect another component, reconnect the 7 pin plug and then each sensor cable one at a time. When the fuse blows again, that sensor or cable contains the short.
