The project focuses on the redesign of the St. Louis MetroLink vehicle interiors and considers its relationship with the adjacent platforms and communities. The changes made are an important step in the effort to generate enthusiasm and pride within the community and achieve a resilient, successful transit system.

NEED OF PUBLIC TRANSIT Throughout the early twentieth century, trains remained the most popular and convenient form of public transportation. Users valued the quick means of long distance travel. By the 1960s, most people owned and preferred the use of a car. No longer reliant upon public transit, people were able to move farther from cities and use cars to commute as needed. Many people still depend on an automobile as their only means of transit. However, recent years have shined light on the environmental consequences. With this knowledge, the public is beginning to see the benefits of using metro systems. Well functioning and highly used public transit systems have again become a relevant and needed part of our society.
ST. LOUIS, MOThe midwestern city of St. Louis has a large metropolitan area with a wide range of demographics. University City is a small district that houses several colleges and the art and entertainment district of Delmar Loop. The MetroLink station located here serves as the example for the vehicle redesign context. The public transportation system includes light rail and bus travel. Only 5% currently use the metro system due to concerns for safety, cleanliness and convenience.

Existing circulation patterns are rigid and make movement difficult, particularly in ADA design. An organic layout encourages natural circulation.
The options to sit or stand are necessary, but do not provide enough convenience for all users on their own. Including spaces to lean give the stability of sitting with the convenience of standing.

This is the location of the company headquarters of callow furniture designs. The building program calls for effective interaction between all financial and production departments.

Adjacencies became a crucial programmatic component. Department heads must be accessible to their designated workers. Centralized, open work stations allow employees to communicate. Financial and creative teams are separated by level.

WORKSTATIONS
Movable workstations provide versatility and can accommodate needs of all departments. The configuration includes break out spaces and low spacial partitions that encourage collaboration. Voids in the ceiling expose the structure and allow natural light to flood the workstations.
Company product is displayed around the perimeter of the waiting space. Natural materials and graphics support the company brand.

Located in Uluwata on the western shore of Bali, this research based design focuses on Indonesian culture and principles. The relationships created between the built environment and nature promote the theories of human wellness and unity. The primary design goal is to encourage user contemplation within the space. This practice leads to greater appreciation for the sacred natural surroundings, and ultimately, optimum user experience.

SCHEMATICSInitial spacial adjacencies focused on creating proximity and overlap between architecture and nature. Outdoor spaces are dispersed through the built environment to create balance. Simple, orthogonal architecture is juxtaposed by dynamic landscape, as is traditional in Bali.

The contemplation space is centrally located and visible from all main living spaces. Local stone tiles and teak wood were chosen to support sustainability and low cost.

The redesign of the Hawker Beechcraft Premier 1A aircraft interior was done in small student groups. Staggered seats make a relatively small cabin feel more spacious. Seats rotate and allow passengers to face one another in order to work and converse. They also lock in forward facing position for take off and landing.
YEAR 3 SEMESTER 1BEECHCRAFT
An undulating work surface combined with rotating seats provides passengers with options. Business members can face a surface and continue working and collaborating or face inward. Floating seats create a spacious feel in the cabin and provide additional legroom. Each passenger is aligned with a personal television screen.

YEAR 3 SEMESTER 1SPACEVIEW EXHIBIT
Spaceview sells commercial space travel to the public and relies on exposure to promote it’s unique product. An exhibition space for potential clients required interactive and educational components. A skeletal structure highlights the centrally located model vehicle and guides visitors through spaces.
The primary arches define the boundaries and dictate the form of all interior fixtures. The users experience is heavily impacted by the gradual changes of the structure height and proximity.

The schematic process explored new methods of foldable seating. A chair frame that hinges on two points along the same line allows it to easily fold and unfold. The seat and back pieces hinge on the frame. This design allows the chair to save space by folding flat.

Initial prototypes were constructed from plywood to find comfortable proportions, sizing and positioning of each piece. The final prototype was constructed of solid ash. The frame was digitally modeled in 3d studio max and cut using a 3d CNC. It was further shaped with hand tools. The seat and back were also created by grinding and sanding solid ash. Aluminum stops embedded in the frame hold the stabilizing cable.

The custom cable connection provides necessary flexibility. The embedded button stop maintains the strong connection.
The beveled profile of the chair requires unique hinges moving the barrel outward. These allow the seat and back to rotate easily.

When open, four surface points give the chair stability while the tension cable prevents legs from splaying too far. To fold, the user rotates the seat and back on to the same plane. When lifted off of the ground, the legs close naturally. The folded form is easy to carry and store.
HOW IT WORKS
Concentrating mainly on structure and weight distribution, the design requirement was to create a stool that is supported by 3 points or fewer. The 2 week time line included the design and fabrication, demanding fast paced progress withoutsacrificing stability.

BENDING METAL
Custom formwork was cut using CNC software so pipes could form a support. Glued sheets of bending plywood were then put into the form. The entire piece was placed into a vacuum bag and left to set, creating the arch.
Solid aluminum rod is formed using a pipe bender. The rod is bent around a di in order to achieve the designated radius.
YEAR 4 SEMESTER 2
STUDY ABROADCOBURG, GERMANY
During a semester in Coburg, Germany, a course in neogothic architecture focused on local castles and churches. The Reithalle Coburg was originally used as horse stables and later became a part of the local theatre.

Hand sketches are a valid tool in my design process and the most commonly used method of generating inital ideas. By using sketching as a simaltaneous part of my thought process, I can explore possibilties without restriction. It is also the fastest, most effective way of communicating my thoughts to others.
