February 2014
Happy New Year Everyone!
We are certainly looking forward to spring, even though the weather hasn’t been too bad so far. Spring also
means exciting events for the bands.
The annual Big Band Dance will be held on Saturday, March 22rd. This
event is a lot of fun and draws large crowds each year. Learn to swing dance, listen to the wonderful Jim
Cunningham Orchestra and the SV Jazz Ensembles, and enjoy hanging out with family and friends. If you are
interested in helping, please contact me.
The Azalea Festival / NATO Parade of Nations trip will be here before we know it. Please be prompt with your
final trip payment, which is due February 1st. Thanks to all who met the deadline for the halfway trip
payment in January 1st!
I also want to thank all of the Boosters that helped make our events
successful this past fall including the Pie Fest, Spaghetti Dinner, Concession Stands, Homecoming Booth, Dining &
Driving for Dollars, and Andreas
Pastries. Because of our hard work
we are once again able to reduce the cost to the families for the band trip. Great job by all!
Please let us know if you have an interest in any particular committee, I would encourage you to get involved
now and possibly shadow the current leader.
If you haven’t visited the band’s
website recently, (svband.net) there are a lot of great pictures to view and the site always has a lot of infor-
mation, it’s worth the visit! We hope you like it. By presenting the
information in this manner, we are able to save a significant amount that can be put to good use in other ways.
Congratulations to the students who made District Band and District Jazz and those that will be moving on to
Regionals.
Our next booster meeting is Tuesday February 11th in the Senior High band
room. I hope to see you then.

Winter Concert
February 2014
On Tuesday January 14, 2014 auditions were held for the 2014 Pennsylvania Music
Educators Association District 5 Jazz Bands at Slippery Rock University. District 5 comprises all school districts in Beaver, Butler, Lawrence, and Mercer counties. There was a record turn out this year with 127 students auditioning. To audition, students
prepare a jazz etude and improvise over the chord changes of a jazz standard. Three Jazz Ensembles are selected from all of the students auditioning for the festival. Each Ensemble is comprised of 19 students for a combined total of 57 available positions at the
festival. Seneca Valley had 28 students earn a position in the ensembles. (you can do the math!) These musicians participated in a two day festival that culminated with a concert in Swope Recital Hall at Slippery Rock University on Saturday, February 1, 2014. Once
again, we are so proud of our students. They continue to raise the bar through their participation and success at PMEA events.

Music will be provided by the Jim Cunningham Orchestra. You'll also be
treated to a sneak preview of both of the Seneca Valley Jazz Ensembles'
spring programs. Tickets are availa-ble at the door for $7.00 for adults and $5.00 for students and seniors. If
you've been to this event in the past,
you already know how much fun it is. If not, it's time you found out!
We request that SV Band parents bring a snack item to share - finger foods not requiring heat or eating utensils.
Fruit or vegetable trays, cheese and crackers, cookies, brownies, and other such delectables work well. Drinks will
be provided. Please do not wear jeans.

everyone's efforts. Students did a great job of getting referrals and an
additional $800 was deposited into individual trip accounts. Congratula-tions to Eli Coyle and Jordan Harris
who were our top referral-getters!!
Eleven mattress sets were donated to The
Lighthouse Mission due to the generosity of those purchasing mattresses. Thank you to the Rodriguez family for painting
the Zelienople sign and to Neal and Aaron Jackson for putting it up and taking it
down for us. A special thank you to all of our volunteers who so enthusiastically helped spread the word on the day of the
