Hemp is cannabis, but it is not marijuana• Cannabis sativa, C. indica and C. ruderalis
• Defined by THC content
► Hemp < 0.3% THC
► Marijuana > 0.3% THC
• Four primary uses for industrial hemp
► Fiber (textile, paper)
► Pulp (building materials)
► Seed/Oil (protein, feed, food, hygiene, fuel, solvent, etc)
► Flower (CBD: flower, oil, distillate, isolate)

Hemp production requires photoperiod control
• Hemp is a short day plant
► Utilize light deprivation to exclude light (black cloth)
► Curtains can be installed truss to truss
► Assure coverage of sidewalls, door openings and exhaust fans
• Maintain vegetative growth with long days
► 18 hours of light
► Night interruption
► LED screw in replacements
• Greenhouse production outside of summer requires additional intensity for flowering
► Increase intensity or day length extension
► High Pressure Sodium – Double ended and 1000W adjustable
► Ceramic Metal Halide
► LED – Fixed spectrum and programmable spectrum

Hemp physiology should be understood
• Dioecious – male and female reproductive organs on different plants
• Hermaphrodite – female plants with pollen structures
• Sinsemilla – pollination free, female flowers with high secondary compounds

Hemp production needs are based on final product
• Seedling and liner production
• Stock plant production
• Seed production (feminized seed)
• Flower production

Seedling production: best practice starts with feminized seeds
• Crop time: 3-4 weeks from sow
• Sow in a 288 cell tray
► 70-75°F bottom heat
► ½” deep, coarse vermiculite cover
► Germinates in 5-7 days
• Fertility
► Use low starter charge in media
► Begin feeding with true leaves
• Build plant prior to transplant
► Transplant to 50 or 72 cell tray
► Pinch prior to transplant
► Maintain 12” height or less

Vegetative propagation ensures 100% female crop
• Crop time: 2-3 weeks
• Requires female stock plants (mothers)
• 4-5” tip cuttings preferred
• Utilize rooting hormone
• Rockwool, engineered or stabilized
media
• Proper humidity required
► Mist system
► Humidity domes
• Bottom heat at 70-75°F
• Provide long days (18 hours)
• Fertilize when roots start to develop,
approx. 8 days

Stock production requires process
• Expect approx. 50% male plants from non-feminized seeds
• Track all stock plants with unique ID
• Stock must be grown under long days
• Bulk plants until ten cuttings supported
• Label cuttings to match stock ID
• Root cuttings and grow under long days
• Induce flowering under short days
• Identify males and females
• Discard males and associated cuttings
• Continue production of mother stock under long days

Trellis systems support tall crops through harvest
• Use with all crops over 24” tall
• Prevents branches from breaking
• Permanent framework attached to bench
• Trellis netting attached to the frame
► Single crop use
► Sold in rolls, 4-6’ wide

CBD production requires growing through flower
• Focus on high quality flower
• Optimize cultivation techniques to achieve highest CBD levels
• Finished product: high quality flower or concentrate
• Additional processing for high end oil, isolate and distillate

Greenhouse production brings advantages
• Complete environmental control
• Multiple crops per year vs. single field planting
• Can increase CBD production by pruning plants longer in vegetative stage
• Easier to control pests
