EXERCISE
WHY?
Why should we exercise?
Helps prevent cardiovascular disease Helps prevent obesity Helps prevent osteoporosis Reduces the risk of type 2 diabetes and
some cancers Makes us feel good!
How much should we exercise? Adults should exercise for 30 minutes
every day Teenagers (12-18) should be active for
60 minutes per day Children (5-12) should be active for at
least 60 minutes per day Children under 5 should be active for 3
hours per day These are minimum recommendations!

While it’s no big deal to most people
It can be a big deal to others...
P.E.? NOOOOOOOO!!!
Why don’t our students like exercise?
They might not know the rules of a game They might have poor basic skills at running,
catching and throwing Their parents and friends might not play sport They might have had bad experiences in the
past Fear of looking silly/being mocked/feeling
incompetent Embarrassment about sporting gear like bathers
or shorts Lack of energy due to low level of fitness
How can we get children and adolescents exercising?
