President’s Message
In today’s increasingly competitive global economy, continual
professional development for management executives and professionals
is key to the sustainable success of any international city. For Hong
Kong, the need for talent is urgent. For a mega economy like China, the
hunger for talented professionals is insatiable.
Committed to being a key player in the globalised world, The Hong
Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) pledges “Opening Minds
• Shaping the Future” as our promise for education and research;
thereby steering us to achieve our vision: “Be a leading university that
excels in professional education, applied research and partnership for
the betterment of Hong Kong, the nation and the world”. In this regard,
PolyU established the Institute of Advanced Executive Education in
2011, drawing on the University’s strengths to offer interdisciplinary
executive education programmes in niche areas with a view to
enhancing the professional development of senior executives.
Through strategic collaboration between our faculties and schools,
namely, the Faculty of Applied Science and Textiles, Faculty of Business,
Faculty of Construction and Environment, Faculty of Engineering,
Faculty of Health and Social Sciences, Faculty of Humanities, School of
Design and School of Hotel and Tourism Management, PolyU has an
impressive track record of providing high-level postgraduate programmes.
I am confident that our quality programmes can help senior executives
and working professionals in different industries further develop
innovative thinking and leadership skills, as well as elevating their global
perspectives to scale higher professional summits. This in turn will help
nurture more effective and visionary leaders for our knowledge-based
society.Prof. Timothy W. Tong, Ph.D.President, PolyU

DEPUTY PRESIDENT & PROVOST’S MESSAGE –– 04
“Innovation is a process to bring new ideas, new methods or new products to an organisation or society that makes sense in a way that people can understand and appreciate.”
Prof. Cees de BontDean and Swire Chair Professor of Design, School of Design, PolyU
In an era of constant changes and complex business, innovation is required to create new ideas, processes or products that can
lead to effective transformational changes to drive economic growth, surpass competition and benefit the society.
The Executive Master in Innovation Leadership programme is designed to take senior executives’ individuality and existence
as social beings as its starting point to deepen their innovative abilities, enhance their design thinking and methods by integrating
design, harnessing the power of branding and creativity.
The design of the programme is held together by a core theme of ‘Making Meaning’, which is interpreted at three levels: Making
Meaning for Oneself, Making Meaning for Organisations, and Making Meaning in the Environment/ Society. Each of those is
underpinned by the notion of Design Thinking, Design Methods and Design Perspectives, which will be applied throughout the
programme.
This programme is hosted by SD, and facilitated by the professional team from IAEE. The rich multidisciplinary curriculum is made
possible by contributions from MM and ENGL. They make it unique and enable interdisciplinary learning so that participants can
extend their ability to make meaning for themselves and their organisations. Our teaching team includes PolyU’s world-class faculty
members, leading practitioners in industry and distinguished scholars from overseas. Participants will acquire the ability to make a
more meaningful contribution to their organisations and to the community at large, in the context of today’s globalised market
environment.
The programme’s emphasis is on the enrichment of senior executives’ capacity for meaningful and innovative thinking, in order to
address real issues in modern business. Senior executives who aspire to designing a more meaningful future are welcome to
participate in this unique interdisciplinary Executive Master!

“Innovation is no longer restricted to product
innovation. It is moving towards the direction
of integrated innovation that comprises
cultural, process, structural, product and
marketing innovation. The programme
nurtures and fosters this pursuit of new form
of innovation that demands corporate leaders
to think and act in a more dynamic and timely
manner, by inviting the participation from all
staff to drive the business forward through
co-creation and co-ownership.”
“Innovation helps to define an individual. It
pushes and pulls the person to many levels of
insights... It reinvents the individual. As a firm
is made up of the collective psyche of many
individuals, a firm is made anew every day by
the employees. Like our cells in our body, if
only they all can play to the same playbook or
DNA pattern, we would be able to create
wonders.”
“Today’s business world is not only complex, but
changes rapidly and in unexpected directions.
Successful leaders are those that can adapt,
anticipate issues and opportunities before they
develop, and find creative and effective solutions
to problems. This unique programme provides a
multidisciplinary, international platform for
improving students’ creative, innovative, and
adaptive abilities, and importantly, their career
success.”
“This programme is designed to impact the
eyes, minds and hands of aspiring leaders –
‘eyes’ for recognising different kinds for
innovation, ‘mind’ for understanding the
relevance of such innovations for the organisation,
and most critically, ‘hands’ in the sense of
driving concrete actions that lead to long
