Often regarded as the founder of Lakeshore Foundation, we were all shocked and saddened to learn of Michael Stephens’ passing on July 1. Despite this, Mike will always be present at Lakeshore Foundation; his fingerprints are behind all that we do, and his spirit will always be with us.
Someone recently asked me what defined Mike Stephens. It was an interesting question. For sure he did not allow disability to define him. Perhaps it was success that defined Mike. No matter the task, challenge, or objective, Mike succeeded. His success was not granted, it was earned. To me, what defined Mike Stephens, if anything could, was his
heartfelt commitment to ensure that people with disability lead the best life possible.
Mike loved sport, not so much for the championships but for the life lessons learned through sport. The seeds of Lakeshore Foundation he planted on a basketball court have grown into the international leader in physical activity, advocacy and research for people with disability that we are today.
Mike challenged us, and he helped us grow. He said be candid and be tough like leather, not concrete, because leather gives, but concrete eventually breaks. He went out of his way to help others get active at Lakeshore, often privately covering the cost of their membership if finances were an issue. He was a man of the people, who seemed most comfortable listening and sharing his story with others who use wheelchairs. He had a big, generous heart along with a toughness and self-proclaimed “street fighter” tenacity. I don’t think he forgot anything he ever asked or told me, even if it was brought up months or years later.
So let us remember to keep Mike and Allison and their families in our thoughts and prayers; let us be mindful of his vision and his desire to improve the lives of people with disability; and let us live every day the mission and vision of Lakeshore. And while we will dearly miss his physical presence, if you ever want to experience his vision and spirit, come to Lakeshore Foundation where it can be found every day.

Lakeshore Serves Our Nation’s Injured MilitaryLakeshore’s Lima Foxtrot programs for injured service members show our brave men and women how to pursue active, independent lives after injury by participating in sports and recreation. We are proud to have impacted the lives of more than 2,500 military personnel and their family members from 46 states. Your support made it all happen. Thank you! Because of your generosity they have reengaged with their communities, friends and family.
Today many large foundations that help fund Lakeshore’s military program have redefined the types of programs they support, but we are committed to helping injured veterans achieve the health and wellness they deserve through our programs of physical activity, nutrition and mindfulness. We need your continued support to enable us to help those who have served us by protecting our nation and our freedom.
• Congratulations to the Lakeshore Demolition Wheelchair Rugby team on winning the Division II National Championship at the 2017 United States Quad Rugby Association (USQRA) National Championship Tournament.
• Three of the world’s best wheelchair rugby teams competed at the 2017 Tri Nations Wheelchair Rugby Tournament at Lakeshore in May. Japan edged the United States for the championship and Canada finished third.
• The adult cycling program continues to be increasingly popular. Thirty participants hit the Chief Ladiga Trail in northeast Alabama for a day of outdoor cycling, which included games along the way.
• The Lakeshore Life Foodie Boot Camp for our members featured two days of education and activities about healthy eating habits. One member said she and her husband are incorporating information they learned into everyday life.
• Lakeshore, NCHPAD and the UAB/Lakeshore Research Collaborative came together to celebrate 10 years of the Inclusive Fitness Coalition and launch a new national initiative, Partnership for Inclusive Health. The Partnership unites organizations behind disability inclusionary practices in healthy community efforts.
• We recently hosted Sileno Santos from Brazil for a four week fellowship opportunity with intensive training on the inclusion of persons with disability in education, recreation and sport. The program, focused on inclusive education, seeks to strengthen access for people with disabilities globally.
• To celebrate National Physical Fitness and Sports Month, the CDC featured NCHPAD’s DocTalk Pledge and Physician’s Toolkit along with Lakeshore member Dr. Hammad Aslam’s story of being a physician with a disability and advocate for prescribing physical activity as medicine. The new Rx for Exercise App provides a user-friendly, clinically relevant tool to prescribe exercise to patients with disability.
• Dr. James Rimmer and Dr. Amie McLain are collaborating on the Scale Up Project Evaluating Responsiveness to Home Exercise and Lifestyle Telehealth (SUPER-HEALTH). This project aims to increase and maintain physical activity levels through a tablet-based home exercise program paired with group-based telephone counseling and is tailored toward people with a mobility impairment. Lakeshore Foundation and UAB’s Spain Rehabilitation Center are the main recruitment sites for project participants.
• The UAB/Lakeshore Research Collaborative is partnering with the Tanner Foundation to implement a $5.8 million, four year contract from the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) established by Congress. The project is expected to greatly enhance care for people with multiple sclerosis across the country. Thirty-eight clinics throughout Alabama, Mississippi and Tennessee are currently part of the project which will allow researchers to compare the results of groups utilizing telehealth for therapy versus those who travel to a clinic.
