Overview
The Euroa Agricultural Society’s 122nd Annual Show held on the 27th October 2012. The Annual Show commences the celebrations for ‘Wool Week’; this spring community celebration brings the small community of Euroa together. 2012 saw the focus being on the year of the farmer, which is a prime employment for residences of Strathbogie Shire Council.
A popular event of the Annual Show is the Euroa Shearing Championships, the event draws large crowds from a wide variety of backgrounds. The general public are mesmerized by the way shearers can make it look so easy, keeping the sheep under control and focusing on each blow, whilst local farmers eye off the quality of the sheep and the talents of individual shearers. Regular competitors use the time to catch up with work colleagues, swapping stories and giving guidance and support for younger up and coming shearers.
The current organisers of the Euroa Shears, Carl Simmons and Murray Moser, have been organising the shearing since 2002 and between them they have a great relationship with not only the local and interstate shearers but also many judges, sponsors, contractors and farmers. Many of these supporters have been assisting with the shearing for many years and the event could not run successfully without this support.
The championships consist of five events, Learners, Intermediate, Senior, Open and Local. Four of these events are finewool championships whilst the local is a strongwool event. The day is a full day commencing with the first draw at 9am and the day is concluded by about 6pm with the presentations.
2012 saw an increase in the show crowd however a slight decrease in competitors due to the clash of events with Warrnambool.
This year also saw as part of the Australian Wool Innovation Limited (AWI) sponsorship the entry fee for each competitor in the Learners event paid for, this was appreciated by entrants, giving them encouragement to have a go and even step up into higher events.
Conduct of Competition
The 2012 Euroa Shears is conducted under the rules of the “Australian National Shearing Association” (ANSA).
Euroa also has an Aggregate Competition between Euroa and Omeo shows for both the open and intermediate events.
Euroa uses a rotational judging system involving nine judges, while running 6 stands. Scores are recorded on both a pen and board sheet, which are then added up to give an overall score. These score sheets are available to the competitor after the presentations and shearers are encouraged to ask questions of judges on how to improve for future events.
Competitors are encouraged to ‘step up’ into the higher classes to gain further experience at show shearing, however due to the number of competitors and sheep the committee reserves the right to restrict entrants to two events.
