In 2005, the Texas Legislature passed Senate Bill
111 that mandates Texas public colleges and
universities to grant 24 credit hours to students
receiving the IB diploma. To receive the IB
diploma, students must attain a total of 24 or
higher on six exams, taken and pass the Theory
of Knowledge class, completed the 150 CAS hours
and have submitted their Extended Essay.

All three parts of the core (center of icon) Extended Essay, Theory of Knowledge & Creativity, Action, Service
are compulsory and are central to the philosophy of the Diploma Program.

What is Theory of Knowledge?

Who should do the IB DP?

Each subject (Higher or Standard) is graded on a scale from 1 to 7, where: 7 = excellent
6 = very good
5 = good
4 = satisfactory
3 = mediocre
2 = poor
1 = very poor
The points are then added together, which gives a maximum of 42 for the six subjects.

Points are then available for Theory of
Knowledge and the Extended Essay.
Each is scored on 5 bands:A. Excellent
B. Good
C. Satisfactory
D. Mediocre
E. Elementary—(U.S.= “F” for failing)
These are then combined on a matrix, which
gives a maximum of 3 Core points that can be
added to the points for the subjects.

The Core Matrix Points
A candidate who obtains an “E” in the EE or in ToK but
achieves 28 points or more is allowed to pass the Diploma. All
other candidates must receive 24 points for the diploma.
