SCHOLARSHIPS
2 | 3
Scholarships work. When offered our largest scholarship, our highest-achieving students accept admittance 68% of the time. When they aren’t, the rate drops to 15%.
With your help, Engineering at Illinois is building a scholarship endowment with real impact.
Engineering at Illinois is ranked fourth in the world. We’re educating more world-class undergraduates than our top three competitors combined and we’re dedicating more to improving undergraduate education than we ever have. However, we are losing some of the best students—from all backgrounds and financial situations—due to a lack of scholarships.
Illinois engineers created the world’s most powerful supercomputer on a university campus, electronics that dissolve harmlessly in your body or in the water supply, a safer power grid, and tools enabling better responses to natural disasters.
We want the best students to learn those problem-solving skills and take them out into the world.

OUR CAMPAIGN
Our goal is to raise a $100 million endowment that will be dedicated exclusively to scholarships to bring the nation’s best students to Illinois. This $100 million will draw a new generation of engineers to Illinois and give them the skills they need to improve our world in ways we can only imagine.
$100 MILLION QUADRUPLES THE AMOUNT AVAILABLE FOR SCHOLARSHIPS
Scholarships work best when we offer a student $10,000 or more and when students know they can count on them every year throughout their undergraduate careers. These are the scholarships that turn elite students’ heads and help them choose Illinois over a competing offer. We want to be able to provide larger scholarships to more students.
Even the best students often receive no scholarship. We admitted 700 students with 35s or 36s on their ACTs last year. We could only offer about half of those students any sort of merit-based aid. You can help us bring more of those top students to Engineering at Illinois.

GROWING STRONGER AS STATE SUPPORT SHRINKS
State support is not nearly what it was 25 years ago. In fact, the state supplies us only 62 cents for every dollar in tuition paid by students. They supplied more than $3.00 per tuition dollar in 1990.
Scholarships keep Engineering at Illinois strong in spite of that.
WHY DO STUDENTS GO ELSEWHERE? MONEY.
When asked why they chose a different school, the best students most frequently answered that they were offered a larger entrance scholarship—even if that scholarship was at a lesser school. We want to do more.
