TODD PHILLIPS – Bachelor of Education (Primary)
‘Growing up in the Aboriginal community of Baryugil, on the north coast of New South Wales (Bundjalung Tribe), I saw real shortages of Indigenous teachers and it got me asking—what can I do? Teachers play a significant role in developing and shaping the lives of young people. I can speak first hand to students about uni life and the importance of education. When I graduate, I want to work in an Indigenous community and give it my all, to see our future generation reach their potential.’
Todd juggles full-time study with part-time work as an Indigenous teacher-aide at Cleveland District State High School.

LAUREN HOVELROUD – Bachelor of Education (Secondary) student and Vice-Chancellor’s Scholar
Lauren Hovelroud wanted to become a teacher because of her interest in both English and Japanese, but especially Japanese. ‘I am very passionate about the language, the culture and everything about Japan, so after I graduate I plan to travel to Japan and teach English while also developing my own Japanese language skills.’ QUT was always Lauren’s first preference. ‘I was keen for a real-world experience and I believed that this university offered the greatest opportunities for me as an education student to become an experienced, skilled and confident teacher.’ Lauren is very excited about completing field experiences and plans to complete one in an international school in Japan.

MATTY MARTIN – Bachelor of Applied Science (in Human Movement Studies)/Bachelor of Education (Secondary) graduate
‘Being a student teacher in the outback enabled me to immerse myself in a culture that is completely different to urban life. I would definitely recommend students step out of their comfort zone by completing field experiences in rural locations. I took the risk and it led to a full-time job in an excellent school, teaching interesting and hard-working students.’
Matty Martin works as a primary physical education teacher at Barcaldine State School, 100 kilometres east of Longreach. Matty knew that teaching in the country was right for him after he completed four weeks of field experience at Barcaldine State School.

SEAN MURRAY – Graduate Diploma in Education (Senior Years) graduate
Sean Murray, an international student from Canada, has recently completed the Graduate Diploma in Education in one year of full-time study. ‘The flexibility of the course and its short duration mean it’s a great option for professionals and recent graduates seeking a career change and in turn attracts dedicated and enthusiastic students from a range of backgrounds.’ Sean feels the student diversity leads to a positive learning environment. ‘As the course has a focus on student participation during tutorials and lectures, it allowed me to hear a variety of opinions on any topic from a diverse group of individuals.’
