Undergraduate research is a defining characteristic of the STEM programs at NKU. In a typical year, hundreds of students work with faculty on innovative research projects attacking important problems in human health, cybersecurity, the environment and much more. Students write grant proposals to support their research and make presentations at regional, national and international STEM meetings.

The variety of research projects allows students to develop marketable skills in a field and strongly supports their professional and personal growth.

HANDS-ON RESEARCH

Dr. Hongmei Wang professor of Computer Science & Geography and Ms. Sarah Johnson Senior Lecturer of Geology are collaborating to study landslides. They are using GIS and LiDAR data to identify landslides, then conducting field checks to verify the data. With the help of eight undergraduate students they are develop-ing a database to be utilized to predict where landslide hazards are most likely.

Quynh Nguyen is a senior Chemistry major and SOAR student at NKU and is honored to have been a part of this impactful program. She is grateful for the support the program has provided academically, personally, and financially. SOAR has helped her develop essential skills that she has applied during her time as an NKU student. Quynh has been conducting research with her advisor Dr. Lili Ma on anti-breast cancer drugs and has been inspired and encouraged by working in the lab. Quynh’s desire is to pursue further education and ultimately “innovate medicines that are more approachable

and efficient to low-income people.”
