The joint-stock enterprise for the Dutch began with the Dutch East India Company in 1602.

Consisted of the overseas territories controlled by the Netherlands from the 17th to the 20th century.

Followed Portugal and Spain by founding an overseas colonial empire.

Dominated global commerce during the 17th century.

West India Company

Concentrated on competing with Portugal in the sugar and slave trade.

1628 Piet Heyn captured the entire Spanish treasure fleet, and made a great fortune in precious goods that later enabled the Company to pay its shareholders a 70% cash dividend.
