Dear HMS Families, This week kicked off the first week of the fourth and final quarter of the school year. Report cards will be available in the portal on Wednesday, April 10th. Students in all grades completed the MCAS test for ELA this week. Although we ran into some technical complications on Tuesday, we were able to resolve those issues. Testing sessions for sixth and eighth graders yesterday, as well as for seventh graders today, went much more smoothly. I thank all of the students and their teachers for their patience and positive attitudes during the session that took place this past Tuesday. I also commend Mrs. Lehane, Mrs. Czech, Ms. Cloutier, and Mr. Carulli for their hard work this week in order to ensure that the MCAS administration was a success. At this time, we are hoping to not have to make any adjustments to the MCAS schedule for mathematics. I will keep you posted on this and notify you any changes as early as possible. Mr. Holden will distribute payment slips to eighth grade students that are registered for the DC Trip in June on Monday, April 8th. The slips will indicate how much students owe for the fourth payment, taking the Cookie Dough Fundraiser into account. The fourth payment is due on Tuesday, April 9th. There is an early release day for students next Friday, April 12th. Students will be dismissed at 12:10 pm. Teachers will participate in a professional development session on that afternoon, which will be focused on teaching in a 1:1 blended learning environment. We are in the process of planning for our transition to a 1:1 school, which means students will have their own laptop computer to use in school and at home. This rollout should take place over the next year or so. Sincerely, Dr. William V. Whalen III Principal

ELA:-So ELA MCAS 2019 is all done! PHEW!! The good news is that students did a phenomenol job using pre-writing strategies plus used the online tools. I was VERY impressed with seeing how seriously they took their writing! In debriefing, most said it was “easy,” and they felt like they were doing another test prep! YAY! Thank you, students, for all your hard work preparing for and taking your MCAS!
Science: What did the paper clip say to the magnet? I find you very attractive. Magnets and its properties was the theme for this week. The students explored the magnetic force and field of different magnets through different activities. Next week we will be combining the ideas of electricity and magnets together when we explore with electromagnets. There will be a short assessment on electricity and magnets Wednesday of next week. Math: This week we finished Geometry. We learned how to find the volume and surface area of rectangular prisms and cubes. Students received a study guide on Friday to prepare them for their unit test on Wednesday and Thursday of next week. Social Studies: We wrapped up our unit on the Peloponnesian War this week. Students learned all about how Pericles, the famed Athenian politician, brought Athens into a Golden Age and then crumbled them into decimation with his decisions in the war. At the end of the week students began prep for a mock trial of the philosopher, Socrates. They recieved roles such as the prosecuting and defense attorney, jury, and even Socrates himself! We willl conduct our trial on Monday of next week.

RED TEAM NEWS -- 2018-2019
Science with Mr. Coury Welcome to 4th Quarter! Students are wrapping up our unit on the Earth and its composition and we are moving into Ecology. Students will be exploring living and nonliving organisms and their interactions, how humans impact the environment, and so on and so forth. During this unit students will engage in a research project and a performance based assessment - called the “Human Impact Project”. Parents are encouraged to speak to their students about this project, as there will be an extra credit portion after school - which will require students to present their information (performance assessment) to a parent or guardian. Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions at [email protected] .
English with Mrs. Thivierge I am so proud of all of the kiddos this week - they worked on MCAS prep up until the very last day, and then had two days of testing! It wasn’t an “easy” first day, but they were tough, got it done, and rocked Thursday’s testing. :) No more MCAS prep for us! Up next for Red Team English: poetry. Happy weekend! Math with Mrs. Halpin We have been working in our Ratios Unit the last couple of weeks. We learned what ratios are and how to solve ratio problems using the WKU method, tape diagrams, double number lines and ratio tables. One important life skill we are going over is how to find the better buy. We are becoming smart consumers! The latest Mathletics assignment is due on Wednesday 4/10/19. Social Studies with Mr. Manton Recently in social studies we have finished our third quarter unit, Europe and Russia. Students impressed me with their effort, motivation and skills with their country travel projects using Beautiful.AI. Students were invested in their projects and truly wanted to give the project their all! We will now move onto Latin America, our last unit and aim to finish strong! Latin America will have two country quizzes that will be announced at a later date via Twitter and this newsletter.

World Language News - Dilworth edition World Language students in grade 6 have finished their study of body parts and are now working on weather vocabulary; their weather quiz will be at the end of next week. I’ve been very impressed how well most of the 6th graders have been applying themselves recently, by the way. Seventh grade Spanish students have been working with the verb tener, which means “to have” and is used in a lot of idiomatic expressions. They’ll have a quiz on it at the beginning of next week. This week they also learned about the founding of Mexico City by the Aztecs by reading a text in Spanish and watching a short English-language video. Ask one of them what sign the Aztecs looked for to know that they had reached the place they should settle. In Portuguese class, 8th graders have been learning how to talk about leisure time activities. They’ve learned the verb estar (one of the two verbs we translate as “to be”), and are now learning some new weather terms. The last topic in this unit that we will address will be how to talk about obligations using the verb ter (“to have”).

HMS PTO News
Saturday is our annual daughter and father/father figure dance! We need one to two more volunteers to help out with the event. Help is needed from 6 to 10 p.m. Please email Kim Becher at [email protected] if you can lend a hand.
The PTO also needs a chair for Staff Appreciation Week during the week of May 6th-10th. We love to dote on our amazing teachers and staff during this week-long event as they do so much for our families! We typically have a theme each day (breakfast, candy, hot chocolate bar, etc.) and a luncheon one of the days during that week. If you are interested in organizing this event or have questions about how you can help out, please email Jen Dyer at [email protected]
