". Most Gracious, Most Merciful!

'. Thee do e orship, and Thine aid e see(.
). Sho us the straight a%,
*. The a% of those on hom Thou hast bestoed Th% Grace, those hose +portion is not rath,
and ho go not astra%.

2. This is the /oo(! in it is guidance sure, ithout doubt, to those ho fear God.
". 0ho beliee in the nseen, are steadfast in pra%er, and spend out of hat 0e hae proided for
them!
#. -nd ho beliee in the 3eelation sent to thee, and sent before th% time, and +in their hearts
hae the assurance of the 4ereafter.
'. The% are on +true guidance, from their ord, and it is these ho ill prosper.
). -s to those ho re5ect 6aith, it is the same to them hether thou arn them or do not arn them!

*. God hath set a seal on their hearts and on their hearing, and on their e%es is a eil! great is the
penalt% the% +incur.

22. 0ho has made the earth %our couch, and the heaens %our canop%! and sent don rain from the
heaens! and brought forth thereith 6ruits for %our sustenance! then set not up rials unto God
hen %e (no +the truth.
2". -nd if %e are in doubt as to hat 0e hae reealed from time to time to Our serant, then
produce a Sura li(e thereunto! and call %our itnesses or helpers +If there are an% besides God, if
%our +doubts are true.
2#. /ut if %e cannot? and of a suret% %e cannot ?? then fear the 6ire hose fuel is men and stones, ??
hich is prepared for those ho re5ect 6aith.
2'. /ut gie glad tidings to those ho beliee and or( righteousness, that their portion is
Gardens, beneath hich riers flo. Aer% time the% are fed ith fruits therefrom, the% sa%8 90h%,
this is hat e ere fed ith before,9 for the% are gien things in similitude! and the% hae therein
companions pure +and hol%! and the% abide therein +for eer.
2). God disdains not to use the similitude of things, loest as ell as highest. Those ho beliee
(no that it is truth from their ord! but those ho re5ect 6aith sa%8 90hat means God b% this
similitude=9 /% it 4e causes man% to stra%, and man% 4e leads into the right path! but 4e causes
not to stra%, eBcept those ho forsa(e +the path, ??
2*. Those ho brea( Gods Coenant after it is ratified, and ho sunder hat God 4as ordered to
be 5oined, and do mischief on earth8 These cause loss +onl% to themseles.
27. 4o can %e re5ect the faith in God. ?? seeing that %e ere ithout life, and 4e gae %ou life!then ill 4e cause %ou to die, and ill again bring %ou to life! and again to 4im ill %e return.
2:. It is 4e 0ho hath created for %ou all things that are on earth! Moreoer 4is design
comprehended the heaens, for 4e gae order and perfection to the seen firmaments! and of all
things 4e hath perfect (noledge.

"'. 0e said8 9O -dam; dell thou and th% ife in the Garden! and eat of the bountiful things
therein as +here and hen %e ill! but approach not this tree, or %e run into harm and
transgression.9
"). Then did Satan ma(e them slip from the +garden, and get them out of the state +of felicit% in
hich the% had been. 0e said8 9Get %e don, all +%e people, ith enmit% beteen %ourseles. On
earth ill be %our delling?place and %our means of lielihood ?? for a time.9
"*. Then learnt -dam from his ord ords of inspiration, and his ord Turned toards him! for 4e
is Oft?3eturning, Most Merciful.
"7. 0e said8 9Get %e don all from here! and if, as is sure, there comes to %ou Guidance from me,
hosoeer follos M% guidance, on them shall be no fear, nor shall the% griee.
":. 9/ut those ho re5ect 6aith and belie Our Signs, the% shall be companions of the 6ire! the%shall abide therein.9

)2. Those ho beliee +in the Furan, and those ho follo the &eish +scriptures, and the
Christians and the Sabians, ?? an% ho beliee in God and the ast $a%, and or( righteousness,
shall hae their reard ith their ord! on them shall be no fear, nor shall the% griee.
)". -nd remember 0e too( %our coenant and 0e raised aboe %ou +The toering height of
Mount +Sinai 8 +Sa%ing8 94old firml% to hat 0e hae gien %ou and bring +eer to
remembrance hat is therein8 Perchance %e ma% fear God.9
)#. /ut %e turned bac( thereafter8 4ad it not been for the Grace and Merc% of God to %ou, %e had
surel% been among the lost.
)'. -nd ell %e (ne those amongst %ou ho transgressed in the matter of the Sabbath8 0e said to
them8 9/e %e apes, despised and re5ected.9
)). So 0e made it an eBample to their on time and to their posterit%, and a lesson to those hofear God.
)*. -nd remember Moses said to his people8 9+God commands that %e sacrifice a heifer.9 The%
said8 9Ma(est thou a laughing?stoc( of us=9 4e said8 9+God sae me from being an ignorant
+fool;9
)7. The% said8 9/eseech on our behalf Th% ord to ma(e plain to us hat +heifer it is;9 4e said!
94e sa%s8 The heifer should be neither too old nor too %oung, but of middling age. >o do hat %e
are commanded;9
):. The% said8 9/eseech on our behalf Th% ord to ma(e plain to us 4er colour.9 4e said8 94e
sa%s8 - fan?coloured heifer, pure and rich in tone, the admiration of beholders;9
*o hast thou brought the truth.9 Then the% offered her in sacrifice, but not
ith good?ill.
*2. 3emember %e sle a man and fell into a dispute among %ourseles as to the crime8 /ut God
as to bring forth hat %e did hide.
*". So 0e said8 9Stri(e the +bod% ith a piece of the +heifer.9 Thus God bringeth the dead to life
and shoeth %ou 4is Signs8 Perchance %e ma% understand.
*#. Thenceforth ere %our hearts hardened8 The% became li(e a roc( and een orse in hardness.
6or among roc(s there are some from hich riers gush forth! others there are hich hen split
asunder send forth ater! and others hich sin( for fear of God. -nd God is not unmindful of hat
%e do.

*'. Can %e +o %e men of 6aith entertain the hope that the% ill beliee in %ou= ?? Seeing that a
part% of them heard the 0ord of God, and pererted it (noingl% after the% understood it.
*). /ehold; hen the% meet the men of 6aith, the% sa%8 90e beliee98 /ut hen the% meet each
other in priate, the% sa%8 9Shall %ou tell them hat God hath reealed to %ou, that the% ma%
engage %ou in argument about it before %our ord=9? $o %e not understand +their aim=
**. no the% not that God (noeth hat the% conceal and hat the% reeal=
*7. -nd there are among them illiterates, ho (no not the /oo(, but +see therein their on
desires, and the% do nothing but con5ecture.
*:. Then oe to those ho rite the /oo( ith their on hands, and then sa%89This is from God,9
to traffic ith it for miserable price; ?? 0oe to them for hat their hands do rite, and for the gain
the% ma(e thereb%.
7a%, those ho see( gain in eil, and are girt round b% their sins, ?? the% are companions of the
6ire8 Therein shall the% abide +6or eer.
72. /ut those ho hae faith and or( righteousness, the% are companions of the Garden8 Therein
shall the% abide +6or eer.
7". -nd remember 0e too( a coenant from the Children of Israel +to this effect8 0orship none
but God. treat ith (indness %our parents and (indred, and orphans and those in need! spea( fair to
the people! be steadfast in pra%er! and practise regular charit%. Then did %e turn bac(, eBcept a fe
among %ou, and %e bac(slide +een no.
7#. -nd remember 0e too( %our coenant +to this effect8 Shed no blood amongst %ou, nor turn
out %our on people from %our homes8 and this %e solemnl% ratified, and to this %e can bear
itness.
7'. -fter this it is %e, the same people, ho sla% among %ourseles, and banish a part% of %ou from
their homes! assist +Their enemies against them, in guilt and rancour! and if the% come to %ou as
capties, %e ransom them, though it as not laful for %ou to banish them. Then is it onl% a part of
the /oo( that %e beliee in, and do %e re5ect the rest= but hat is the reard for those among %ou
ho behae li(e this but disgrace in this life= ?? and on the $a% of &udgment the% shall be
consigned to the most grieous penalt%. 6or God is not unmindful of hat %e do.
7). These are the people ho bu% the life of this orld at the price of the 4ereafter8 their penalt%
shall not be lightened nor shall the% be helped.

7*. 0e gae Moses the /oo( and folloed him up ith a succession of apostles! 0e gae &esus
the son of Mar% Clear +Signs and strengthened him ith the hol% spirit. Is it that heneer there
comes to %ou an apostle ith hat %e %ourseles desire not, %e are puffed up ith pride= ?? Some
%e called impostors, and others %e sla%;
77. The% sa%, 9Our hearts are the rappings +hich presere Gods 0ord8 e need no more.9 >a%,
Gods curse is on them for their blasphem%8 ittle is it the% beliee.
7:. -nd hen there comes to them a /oo( from God, confirming hat is ith them, ?? although
from of old the% had pra%ed for ictor% against those ithout 6aith, ?? hen there comes to them
that hich the% +should hae recognised, the% refuse to beliee in it but the curse of God is on
those ithout 6aith.

11one shall enter Paradise unless he be a &e or a Christian.9 Those are their
+ain desires. Sa%8 9Produce %our proof if %e are truthful.9
112. >a%, ?? hoeer submits 4is hole self to God and is a doer of good, ?? 4e ill get his reard
ith his ord! on such shall be no fear, nor shall the% griee.
11". The &es sa%8 9The Christians hae naught +to stand upon! and the Christians sa%8 9The &es
hae naught +To stand upon.9 Det the% +Profess to stud% the +same /oo(. i(e unto their ord is
hat those sa% ho (no not! but God ill 5udge beteen them in their Euarrel on the $a% of
&udgment.
11#. -nd ho is more un5ust than he ho forbids that in places for the orship of God, Godsname should be celebrated=?hose @eal is +in fact to ruin them= It as not fitting that such should
themseles enter them eBcept in fear. 6or them there is nothing but disgrace in this orld, and in
the orld to come, an eBceeding torment.
11'. To God belong the east and the 0est8 0hithersoeer %e turn, there is the presence of God. 6or
God is all?Perading, all?noing.
11). The% sa%8 9+God hath begotten a son9 8Glor% be to 4im.?? >a%, to 4im belongs all that is in
the heaens and on earth8 eer%thing renders orship to 4im.
11*. To 4im is due the primal origin of the heaens and the earth8 0hen 4e decreeth a matter, 4e
saith to it8 9/e,9 and it is.
117. Sa% those ithout (noledge8 90h% spea(eth not God unto us= or h% cometh not unto us a
Sign=9 So said the people before them ords of similar import. Their hearts are ali(e. 0e hae
indeed made clear the Signs unto an% people ho hold firml% to 6aith +in their hearts.
11:. Heril% 0e hae sent thee in truth as a bearer of glad tidings and a arner8 /ut of thee no
Euestion shall be as(ed of the Companions of the /la@ing 6ire.
12eer ill the &es or the Christians be satisfied ith thee unless thou follo their form of
religion. Sa%8 9The Guidance of God, ?? that is the +onl% Guidance.9 0ert thou to follo their
desires after the (noledge hich hath reached thee, then ouldst thou find neither Protector nor
helper against God.
121. Those to hom 0e hae sent the /oo( stud% it as it should be studied8 The% are the ones that
beliee therein8 Those ho re5ect faith therein, ?? the loss is their on.
122. O Children of Israel; call to mind the special faour hich I bestoed upon %ou, and that I
preferred %ou to all others +for M% Message.

12". Then guard %ourseles against a?$a% hen one soul shall not aail another, nor shall
compensation be accepted from her nor shall intercession profit her nor shall an%one be helped
+from outside.
12#. -nd remember that -braham as tried b% his ord ith certain commands, hich he
fulfilled8 4e said8 9I ill ma(e thee an Imam to the >ations.9 4e pleaded8 9-nd also +Imams from
m% offspring;9 4e ansered8 9/ut M% Promise is not ithin the reach of eil?doers.9
12'. 3emember 0e made the 4ouse a place of assembl% for men and a place of safet%! and ta(e %e
the station of -braham as a place of pra%er! and 0e coenanted ith -braham and Ismail, that
the% should sanctif% M% 4ouse for those ho compass it round, or use it as a retreat, or bo, or
prostrate themseles +therein in pra%er.
12). -nd remember -braham said8 9M% ord, ma(e this a Cit% of Peace, and feed its people ith
fruits, ?? such of them as beliee in God and the ast $a%.9 4e said8 9+Dea, and such as re5ect6aith, ?? for a hile ill I grant them their pleasure, but ill soon drie them to the torment of 6ire,
?? an eil destination +indeed;9
12*. -nd remember -braham and Ismail raised the foundations of the 4ouse +0ith this pra%er8
9Our ord; -ccept +this serice from us8 6or Thou art the -ll?4earing, the -ll?(noing.
127. 9Our ord; ma(e of us Muslims, boing to Th% +0ill, and of our progen% a people Muslim,
boing to Th% +ill! and sho us our place for the celebration of +due rites! and turn unto us +in
Merc%! for Thou art the Oft?3eturning, Most Merciful.
12:. 9Our ord; send amongst them an Messenger of their on, ho shall rehearse Th% Signs to
them and instruct them in scripture and isdom, and sanctif% them8 6or Thou art the ABalted in
Might, the 0ise.9

+I ould rather the 3eligion of -braham the True, and he 5oined not gods ith God.9
1"). Sa% %e8 90e beliee in God, and the reelation gien to us, and to -braham, Ismail, Isaac,
&acob, and the Tribes, and that gien to Moses and &esus, and that gien to +all prophets from their
ord8 0e ma(e no difference beteen one and another of them8 -nd e bo to God +in Islam.9
1"*. So if the% beliee as %e beliee, the% are indeed on the right path! but if the% turn bac(, it is
the% ho are in schism! but God ill suffice thee as against them, and 4e is the -ll?4earing, the
-ll?noing.
1"7. +Our religion is the /aptism of God. -nd ho can bapti@e better than God. -nd it is 4e
0hom e orship.
1":. Sa%8 0ill %e dispute ith us about God, seeing that 4e is our ord and %our ord! that e areresponsible for our doings and %e for %ours! and that 0e are sincere +in our faith in 4im=

1#:. 6rom hencesoeer Thou startest forth, turn Th% face in the direction of the sacred MosEue!
that is indeed the truth from the ord. -nd God is not unmindful of hat %e do.
1'a%, the% are liing,
though %e perceie +it not.
1''. /e sure e shall test %ou ith something of fear and hunger, some loss in goods or lies or the
fruits +of %our toil, but gie glad tidings to those ho patientl% perseere,
1'). 0ho sa%, hen afflicted ith calamit%8 9To God 0e belong, and to 4im is our return98?
1'*. The% are those on hom +$escend blessings from God, and Merc%, and the% are the ones that
receie guidance.
1'7. /ehold; Safa and Mara are among the S%mbols of God. So if those ho isit the 4ouse in
the Season or at other times, should compass them round, it is no sin in them. -nd if an% one
obe%eth his on impulse to good, ?? be sure that God is 4e 0ho recogniseth and (noeth.
1':. Those ho conceal the clear +Signs 0e hae sent don, and the Guidance, after 0e hae
made it clear for the people in the /oo(, ?? on them shall be Gods curse, and the curse of those
entitled to curse, ??

1)1. Those ho re5ect 6aith, and die re5ecting, ?? on them is Gods curse, and the curse of angels,
and of all man(ind!
1)2. The% ill abide therein8 Their penalt% ill not be lightened, nor ill respite be their +lot.
1)". -nd %our God is One God. There is no god but 4e, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
1)#. /ehold; in the creation of the heaens and the earth! in the alternation of the night and the
da%! in the sailing of the ships through the ocean for the profit of man(ind! in the rain hich God
Sends don from the s(ies, and the life hich 4e gies thereith to an earth that is dead! in the
beasts of all (inds that 4e scatters through the earth! in the change of the inds, and the clouds
hich the% Trail li(e their slaes beteen the s(% and the earth!? +4ere indeed are Signs for a
people that are ise.
1)'. Det there are men ho ta(e +for orship others besides God, as eEual +ith God.8 The% loethem as the% should loe God. /ut those of 6aith are oerfloing in their loe for God. If onl% the
unrighteous could see, behold, the% ould see the penalt%8 that to God belongs all poer, and God
ill strongl% enforce the penalt%.
1)). Then ould those ho are folloed clear themseles of those ho follo +them 8 The%
ould see the penalt%, and all relations beteen them ould be cut off.
1)*. -nd those ho folloed ould sa%8 9If onl% 0e had one more chance, 0e ould clear
ourseles of them, as the% hae cleared themseles of us.9 Thus ill God sho them +The fruits of
their deeds as +nothing but regrets. >or ill there be a a% for them out of the 6ire.
1)7. O %e people; Aat of hat is on earth, aful and good! and do not follo the footsteps of the
eil one, for he is to %ou an aoed enem%.
1):. 6or he commands %ou hat is eil and shameful, and that %e should sa% of God that of hich
%e hae no (noledge.
1*a%; e shall follo
the a%s of our fathers.9 0hat; een though their fathers 0ere oid of isdom and guidance=
1*1. The parable of those ho re5ect 6aith is as if one ere to shout i(e a goat?herd, to things that
listen to nothing but calls and cries8 $eaf, dumb, and blind, the% are oid of isdom.
1*2. O %e ho beliee; Aat of the good things that 0e hae proided for %ou, and be grateful to
God, if it is 4im %e orship.
1*". 4e hath onl% forbidden %ou dead meat, and blood, and the flesh of sine, and that on hich
an% other name hath been ino(ed besides that of God. /ut if one is forced b% necessit%, ithout
ilful disobedience, nor transgressing due limits, ?? then is he guiltless. 6or God is Oft?forgiing
Most Merciful.

1*#. Those ho conceal Gods reelations in the /oo(, and purchase for them a miserable profit, ??
the% sallo into themseles naught but 6ire! God ill not address them on the $a% of
3esurrection. >or purif% them8 Grieous ill be their penalt%.
1*'. The% are the ones ho bu% Arror in place of Guidance and Torment in place of 6orgieness.
-h; hat boldness +The% sho for the 6ire;
1*). +Their doom is because God sent don the /oo( in truth but those ho see( causes of
dispute in the /oo( are in a schism 6ar +from the purpose.
1**. It is not righteousness that %e turn %our faces Toards east or 0est! but it is righteousness? to
beliee in God and the ast $a%, and the -ngels, and the /oo(, and the Messengers! to spend of
%our substance, out of loe for 4im, for %our (in, for orphans, for the need%, for the a%farer, for
those ho as(, and for the ransom of slaes! to be steadfast in pra%er, and practice regular charit%!
to fulfil the contracts hich %e hae made! and to be firm and patient, in pain +or suffering andadersit%, and throughout all periods of panic. Such are the people of truth, the God.fearing.
1*7. O %e ho beliee; the la of eEualit% is prescribed to %ou in cases of murder8 the free for the
free, the slae for the slae, the oman for the oman. /ut if an% remission is made b% the brother
of the slain, then grant an% reasonable demand, and compensate him ith handsome gratitude, this
is a concession and a Merc% from %our ord. -fter this hoeer eBceeds the limits shall be in
grae penalt%.
1*:. In the a of AEualit% there is +saing of ife to %ou, o %e men of understanding! that %e ma%
restrain %ourseles.

present +at his home during that month should spend it in fasting, but if an% one is ill, or on a
5ourne%, the prescribed period +Should be made up b% da%s later. God intends eer% facilit% for
%ou! 4e does not ant to put to difficulties. +4e ants %ou to complete the prescribed period, and
to glorif% 4im in that 4e has guided %ou! and perchance %e shall be grateful.
17). 0hen M% serants as( thee concerning Me, I am indeed close +to them8 I listen to the pra%er
of eer% suppliant hen he calleth on Me8 et them also, ith a ill, isten to M% call, and beliee
in Me8 That the% ma% al( in the right a%.
17*. Permitted to %ou, on the night of the fasts, is the approach to %our ies. The% are %our
garments and %e are their garments. God (noeth hat %e used to do secretl% among %ourseles!
but 4e turned to %ou and forgae %ou! so no associate ith them, and see( hat God 4ath
ordained for %ou, and eat and drin(, until the hite thread of dan appear to %ou distinct from its
blac( thread! then complete %our fast Till the night appears! but do not associate ith %our ies
hile %e are in retreat in the mosEues. Those are imits +set b% God. -pproach not nigh thereto.Thus doth God ma(e clear 4is Signs to men8 that the% ma% learn self?restraint.
177. -nd do not eat up %our propert% among %ourseles for anities, nor use it as bait for the
5udges, ith intent that %e ma% eat up rongfull% and (noingl% a little of +other peoples
propert%.
17:. The% as( thee concerning the >e Moons. Sa%8 The% are but signs to mar( fiBed periods of
time in +the affairs of men, and for Pilgrimage. It is no irtue if %e enter %our houses from the
bac(8 It is irtue if %e fear God. Anter houses through the proper doors8 -nd fear God. That %e ma%
prosper.

1:). -nd complete the 4a55 or umra in the serice of God. /ut if %e are preented +6rom
completing it, send an offering for sacrifice, such as %e ma% find, and do not shae %our heads
until the offering reaches the place of sacrifice. -nd if an% of %ou is ill, or has an ailment in his
scalp, +>ecessitating shaing, +4e should in compensation either fast, or feed the poor, or offer

-braham, Ismail, Isaac, &acob, and the Tribes, and in +the /oo(s gien to Moses, &esus, and the
prophets, from their ord8 0e ma(e no distinction beteen one and another among them, and to
God do e bo our ill +in Islam.9
7'. If an%one desires a religion other than Islam +submission to God., neer ill it be accepted of
him! and in the 4ereafter 4e ill be in the ran(s of those ho hae lost +-ll spiritual good.

earned, ?? and none shall be dealt ith un5ustl%.

rath of God, and hose abode is in 4ell= ?? - oeful refuge;
1)". The% are in ar%ing gardens in the sight of God, and God sees ell all that the% do.

among themseles, rehearsing unto them the Signs of God, sanctif%ing them, and instructing them

'. To those ea( of understanding Ma(e not oer %our propert%, hich God hath made a means of
support for %ou, but feed and clothe them thereith, and spea( to them ords of (indness and
5ustice.
). Ma(e trial of orphans until the% reach the age of marriage! if then %e find sound 5udgment in
them, release their propert% to them! but consume it not astefull%, nor in haste against their
groing up. If the guardian is ell?off, et him claim no remuneration, but if he is poor, let him
hae for himself hat is 5ust and reasonable. 0hen %e release their propert% to them, ta(e
itnesses in their presence8 /ut all?sufficient is God in ta(ing account.

from amongst %ou against them! and if the% testif%, confine them to houses until death do claim
them, or God ordain for them some +other a%.
1). If to men among %ou are guilt% of ledness, punish them both. If the% repent and amend,
eae them alone! for God is Oft?returning, Most Merciful.
1*. God accept the repentance of those ho do eil in ignorance and repent soon afterards! tothem ill God turn in merc%8 6or God is full of (noledge and isdom.
17. Of no effect is the repentance of those ho continue to do eil, until death faces one of them,

paramours8 hen the% are ta(en in edloc(, if the% fall into shame, their punishment is half that for

no friends or helpers from their ran(s!?
:eer should a belieer (ill a belieer! but +If it so happens b% mista(e, +Compensation is
due8 If one +so (ills a belieer, it is ordained that he should free a belieing slae, and pa%
compensation to the deceaseds famil%, unless the% remit it freel%. If the deceased belonged to a
people at ar ith %ou, and he as a belieer, the freeing of a belieing slae +Is enough. If he
belonged to a people ith hom %e hae treat% of Mutual alliance, compensation should be paid to
his famil%, and a belieing slae be freed. 6or those ho find this be%ond their means, +is
prescribed a fast for to months running8 b% a% of repentance to God. for God hath all

descendants or ascendants as heirs. If it is a man that dies, leaing a sister but no child, she shall

precincts or in pilgrim garb8 for God doth command according to 4is ill and plan.
2. O %e ho beliee; Hiolate not the sanctit% of the s%mbols of God, nor of the sacred month, nor
of the animals brought for sacrifice, nor the garlands that mar( out such animals, nor the people

". 6orbidden to %ou +for food are8 dead meat, blood, the flesh of sine, and that on hich hath
been ino(ed the name of other than God. that hich hath been (illed b% strangling, or b% a iolent
blo, or b% a headlong fall, or b% being gored to death! that hich hath been +partl% eaten b% a
ild animal! unless %e are able to slaughter it +in due form! that hich is sacrificed on stone
+altars! +forbidden also is the diision +of meat b% raffling ith arros8 that is impiet%. This da%
hae those ho re5ect faith gien up all hope of %our religion8 %et fear them not but fear Me. This
da% hae I perfected %our religion for %ou, completed M% faour upon %ou, and hae chosen for
%ou Islam as %our religion. /ut if an% is forced b% hunger, ith no inclination to transgression, God
is indeed Oft?forgiing, Most Merciful.
#. The% as( thee hat is laful to them +as food. Sa%8 laful unto %ou are +all things good and
pure8 and hat %e hae taught %our trained hunting animals +to catch in the manner directed to %oub% God. eat hat the% catch for %ou, but pronounce the name of God oer it8 and fear God. for God
is sift in ta(ing account.
'. This da% are +all things good and pure made laful unto %ou. The food of the People of the
/oo( is laful unto %ou and %ours is laful unto them. +aful unto %ou in marriage are +not
onl% chaste omen ho are belieers, but chaste omen among the People of the /oo(, reealed
before %our time, ?? hen %e gie them their due doers, and desire chastit%, not ledness, nor
secret intrigues if an% one re5ects faith, fruitless is his or(, and in the 4ereafter he ill be in the
ran(s of those ho hae lost +all spiritual good.
). O %e ho beliee; hen %e prepare for pra%er, ash %our faces, and %our hands +and arms to
the elbos! 3ub %our heads +ith ater! and +ash %our feet to the an(les. If %e are in a state of
ceremonial impurit%, bathe %our hole bod%. /ut if %e are ill, or on a 5ourne%, or one of %ou
cometh from offices of nature, or %e hae been in contact ith omen, and %e find no ater, then
ta(e for %ourseles clean sand or earth, and rub thereith %our faces and hands, God doth not ish
to place %ou in a difficult%, but to ma(e %ou clean, and to complete his faour to %ou, that %e ma%
be grateful.
*. -nd call in remembrance the faour of God unto %ou, and 4is coenant, hich 4e ratified ith
%ou, hen %e said8 90e hear and e obe%98 -nd fear God, for God (noeth ell the secrets of
%our hearts.
7. O %e ho beliee; stand out firml% for God, as itnesses to fair dealing, and let not the hatred of
others to %ou ma(e %ou sere to rong and depart from 5ustice. /e 5ust8 that is neBt to piet%8 and
fear God. 6or God is ell?acEuainted ith all that %e do.

regular charit%, beliee in m% apostles, honour and assist them, and loan to God a beautiful loan,

but if an% of %ou, after this, resisteth faith, he hath trul% andered from the path or rectitude.9
