ORACLE 9i Installation
Key slides for installing the database
• Prior to downloading files from Oracle, you will have to register as an Oracle user.
• The Oracle 9i database can be downloaded from
– http://www.oracle.com/technology/software/products/oracle9i/htdocs/winsoft.html
• If you have not registered, you will be asked to.
• There are three files for this download.– 92010NT_Disk1.zip (612,802,971 bytes)
– 92010NT_Disk2.zip (537,604,934 bytes)
– 92010NT_Disk3.zip (254,458,106 bytes)
This is the first screen for Oracle 9i installation. With it you can install or remove Oracle products
Slide1
This is where the Oracle installation files are resident, usually on a CD-ROM. These files will be installed from here
to the destination.
This is directory for the Oracle files in the computer.
Any name can be given. This is the
default name.

These are the Oracle products that are available fro installation. This screen shows that the Oracle 9i
database will be installed.Slide

Slide4
The type of installation can be specified. Here, the Enterprise Edition will be installed. It gives the most functionality.
Slide5
The database configuration is specified. Choose the one that best suits your purpose.
Slide6
This is used to resolve in-doubt transactions on the computer that started a failed transaction. This is the default port where
the MTS Server will listen for such requests.
Slide7
The name of the database in this example is UTOPIA. Both upper and lower case are valid. If on a Brock University server
it could be UTOPIA.BROCKU.CA
Oracle also uses a term called the SID, Oracle System Identifier, or System Identifier. This term is typically used when
trying to link the database to an on-line oracle client or user.
Slide8
This is where the Oracle data files will be stored. Oradata is the default name. Any valid name can be used.
Slide9
Different languages store data using different numeric characters and alphabetics. This screen enables you to specify
the character set.
Slide10
This screen shows a summary of all the information collected prior to the actual installation.
Slide11
The actual installation is now taking place. This can take about five minutes on 2008 desktops until completed.
Slide12
This shows the progress of the installation of optional tools that are needed to configure the Oracle 9i database.
Theses are two important tools. The Oracle Net Configuration Assistant allows the DBA to configure client workstations. The Oracle Database Configuration Assistant configures the new database. It also allows the addition of another database instance e.g. EDEN could be
installed in addition to UTOPIA.
Slide13
This shows the progress of configuring the new database instance.
Slide14
Passwords are essential for database security. Two administrative user accounts are automatically created, SYS
and SYSTEM. Both are granted the DBA role.
SYS All of the base tables and views for the database data dictionary are stored in the schema SYS. These base tables and views are critical for the operation of Oracle Database. To maintain the integrity of the data dictionary, tables in the SYS schema are manipulated only by the database. They should never be modified by any user or database administrator, and no one should create any tables in the schema of user SYS. (However, you can change the storage parameters of the data dictionary settings if necessary.) Ensure that most database users are never able to connect to Oracle Database using the SYS account.SYSTEM The SYSTEM username is used to create additional tables and views that display administrative information, and internal tables and views used by various Oracle Database options and tools. Never use the SYSTEM schema to store tables of interest to non-administrative users. The DBA Role A predefined Database Administrator role is automatically created with every Oracle Database installation. This role contains most database system privileges. Therefore, the DBA role should be granted only to actual database administrators.

This figure will appear in the background when entering passwords. It can be ignored.

The passwords have been entered
Slide17
This slide just informs you that these tools will be automatically started.
Slide18
The installation of the database is complete.
• Once the database has been installed, you need to set up some new userids. Remember you should not use SYS or SYSTEM.– Open SQLPlus screen under:
• Start/Programs /Oracle-OraHome92/Application Development• using the SYSTEM userid.
– Create a userid called root and grant it DBA privileges.
• Create user root identified by password;• Grant dba to root;
– Shut down the database and open it again as root.– Create a userid that you want to use in your database
and grant it connect and resource privileges.• Create user username identified by password;• Grant connect, resource to username;
– Now shutdown the database and reconnect as username.
