Organophosphates/Carbamates

• Malicious poisoning• Temik (“Two step”)/Aldicarb• Agricultural remedy -insecticides, jackal killer

• Looks like black granules (“poppy seeds”)

• Sold illegally – taxi ranks, train stations• Place in meat e.g. sausages, mince,

bread etc• Symptoms – 5-15min QUICK!!!

What are the signs?

• Excessive salivation• Vomiting• Abdominal pain• Defaecation/Diarrhoea• Not wanting to eat• Runny nose/eyes• Difficulty breathing/blue gums

• Muscles twitching/trembling• Restlessness• Weakness• Paralysis (36-72hrs later)• EVENTUALLY… convulsions and

coma• DEATH!

What must I do?

• EMERGENCY!!!• Call security company - burglary?• Protect other animals/take inside house• Try get to eat large meal - bread, dog food• Head straight to the vet > Fourways Vet – 011 705 3411 > Bryanston Vet – 011 706 6023/4/5• If any delay… - Try get to vomit –washing powder, dish

washing liquid - Activated charcoal

Rat Poison

• Generally NOT malicious• “Rattex”, Warfarin, anti-coagulant• Symptoms – 2 days - 1 week• Only if directly eaten. • NOT if eats mouse/rat!!! • Very tasty

Signs to watch out for

• Bruising – anywhere e.g. skin, gums• Pale gums• Lethargic• Not eating• Difficulty breathing/coughing• Vomiting/diarrhoea with blood in

Treatment

• If see eating then need to make vomit/go to vet – EMERGENCY!

• Will need treatment• Vitamin K/Blood transfusion• Long term• EXPENSIVE!!!• Be vigilant the following nights after

incident has occurred…SECURITY!

Finally…

• Report to police• Keep a sample• Get vet to write report if needed
