Discuss the question of the death penalty in general. How far do you think it is justified?
Death penalty is a question of controversy. People have different notions about the matter: some uphold it
as necessary; others condemn it as ³murder by the state´. Therefore, I would like to have a look at the
question in this essay to decide how justifiable death penalty could be.
(For) One of the strong points of death penalty is that it is a necessary measure to maintain social order. In
other words, social civilization is based on a well-formed system which stipulates that there are things we,
as members of society, can do, and things we are not supposed to do, such as deliberate murder. If one
violates the system, the he/ she has to pay for it- sometimes to forfeit his /her own like. Moreover, though
most people find it difficult to accept the fact that a state should execute a murderer, it is virtually fair
enough if we look at the matter from the point of view of the victim and his/her family. In fact, it is
equally difficult for the family to accept the fact that their relatives died for something which should not
have happened at all. That is to say death penalty is a way to guarantee social order and punish those who
fail to comply with the law.
(against) the opponents of death penalty believe that the taking of a guilt person¶s life is just as violent as
the killing of an innocent. In short, death penalty, in china some people feel that putting a murderer to
death will not bring the victim back to like again. Though their feeling is understandable in a sense, we
really cannot let our feeling make a judgment on a matter of life and death. if that happened, we would
impossibly maintain justice in our society and consequently, civilization would be undermined.
In conclusion, I would like to say that it is extremely necessary and crucial to maintain death penalty in
our society. Without it, it is hard to keep our civilization complete. However, I do believe that death
penalty should be carefully handled. Each case should be thoroughly reviewed and concluded on that
bases of facts. Only in this way can the purpose of death penalty be fulfilled and justice maintained.
