TOURISM

Total number of tourists in 2013 amounted to 2192 thousand and was by 5.4% higher than in 2012, whereof the number of domestic tourists amounted to 1270 thousand and was higher by 0.1%, while the number of foreign tourists who visited our country amounted to 922 thousand, presenting the increase of 13.8% when compared to 2012.

Realized number of all tourists nights who were using the ac-commodation facilities was 6567 thousand and was higher by 1.3% compared to the previous year. Domestic tourists realized 4579 thousand of nights (fall of 2.3% compared to 2012), while the number of overnight stays of foreign tourists was by 10.7% higher than in 2012 and it amounted to 1988 thousand of nights.

Out of total number of tourists nights (6567 thousand), 32.5% (2134 thousand) were recorded in spas and 23.7% (1558 thousand) in mountain resorts.

The structure of domestic tourists nights shows that 42.6% was realized in spas (1953 thousand) and 29.8% (1364 thousand) in mountain resorts, out of total number of domestic tourists nights (4579 thousand).

The structure of foreign tourists nights shows that there were 52.1% (1036 thousand) of tourists in Grad Beograd, 8.5% (170 thousand) in Grad Novi Sad, 9.1% (181 thousand) in spas and 9.8% (194 thousand) in mountain resorts, out of total number of foreign tourists nights (1988).

The largest number of foreign tourists who visited Republic of Serbia in 2013 were tourists from Bosnia and Herzegovina (68 thous. arrivals, 156 thous. nights), Montenegro (68 thous. arrivals, 137 thous. nights), Slovenia (67 thous. arrivals, 122 thous. nights), Germany (55 thous. arrivals, 108 thousand. nights) and Croatia (53 thous. arrivals, 100 thous. nights).

Sources and methods of data collection

Data are collected by the monthly statistical reports issued by catering trades and other business entities providing service of accommodation or mediating in this kind of services. The data sources are guests books, kept by business entities, rendering accommodation services in accordance with legal regulations on foreigners' movements and stay and legal regulations on citizens residence and stay. Data on business entities operations dealing with tourism mediation are obtained by statistical survey on tourist agencies.

Methodology of Tourism Statistics is based on the international recommendations for Tourism Statistics (EU and WTO).

Coverage

Monthly survey on tourist arrivals and nights covers catering and other business entities providing tourists accommodation or mediating in this kind of services. Thus, complete coverage should be ensured. However, a certain number of tourists using accommodation services in the establishments in which the services are offered by physical persons are not covered by the survey. Data on accommodation establishment capacities are published as numbers of rooms and beds, as of 31 August, i.e. the last working day of the entire establishment in August, since the process of categorization of accommodation establishments is permanent, types and categories may have been changed compared to the previously published data. Statistical survey on tourist agencies includes travel agencies with head offices in the Republic of Serbia which possess the license to mediate in tourism operations.

Definitions A tourist is any visitor who stays at least one night in an accom-

modation establishment in the place visited. A visitor is any person traveling to a place outside his usual

environment for less than 12 consecutive months and whose main visit purpose is other than being employed by a resident entity in the place visited.

Arrivals mean the number of tourists spending one or more nights in an accommodation establishment during the observed period. Chil-dren are also included, regardless of the age. Permanent residents of the facility (staff, owner and household members, etc.), as well as per-sons having refugees status, are not included.

The number of arrivals cannot be considered as equal to the num-ber of tourists. A person can travel several times during a year; moreover, a person can visit many places during a single trip, being each time registered in the accommodation establishment. Therefore, statistics registers the number of tourist arrivals, but not the number of tourists.

The country of origin is determined on the basis of citizenship. Tourist resort presents organizational and functional whole, with

the established tourist offer, natural beauties, cultural-historical monuments and other monuments significant for tourism, utility, transport and tourist infrastructure, as well as accommodation and accompanying facilities.

CATERING TRADE

The total catering trade turnover in the Republic of Serbia in 2013, at current prices, amounted to RSD 64685 million and was by 6.3% higher than in the previous year ( 60841million), while at constant prices, the increase of 0.4% was noted.

The turnover structure in catering trade in 2013, observed by type of services performed, shows that the largest share was that of food and beverages (51,1%), then of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages (28.6%), overnights (17.1%) etc.

Sources and methods of data collection Data on the network and turnover data in catering trade have

been taken over from regular quarterly and annual sample-based surveys on operations of business entities and parts of business entities dealing with catering trade.

Coverage Generally, full coverage in all tables has been provided. Close

type catering establishments in business entities and other organizations are not included. Statistical surveys cover all business entities that are registered in the scope of the section I of the Classification of Activities, as well as those registered in other sections, but performing catering trade activity.

Definitions A catering business unit is a catering establishment which forms a

structure in the business, construction and functional sense, or which has, within a bigger construction structure, a separate space and meeting necessary business requirements to perform a catering activity.

Turnover in catering trade is, in terms of book-keeping, a computed value of rendered catering services (accommodation, food and beverages), as well as of other services usually rendered in catering trade (passengers and luggage transport, craftsman services, sale of tobacco, souvenirs, newspapers, etc.). VAT is included in the value of the rendered services.

For comparability purposes (in case of longer time series), the value of catering trade turnover is shown at 2005 prices and dinars.
