Borealis more security and storage management at Less Cost

Polyolefins isn’t a word that crops up regularly, but in fact it’s the key ingredient that makes up much of the world’s plastics products―and it’s also at the center of the Borealis’ business. Symantec™ solutions are also at the heart of this mul-tinational plastics company. While Symantec security solutions are worked dis-cretely and efficiently in the background protecting more than 5,000 endpoints and up to 400 servers from malware and viruses, their client management solu-tions are equally busy supporting remote software deployments, imaging, and patch management. The solution stealing the headlines though is Symantec Enterprise Vault™, which Borealis is using to archive terabytes of email, file systems data, and SharePoint storage onto low cost, accessible storage. This intelligent single instance storage solution is reducing storage capacity by 30 percent and saving Borealis up to €10,000 per terabyte of storage.

40 years of experience in polyolefins

Borealis (www.borealisgroup.com) is a leading provider of innovative, value creating plastics solutions. With more than 40 years of experience in polyolefins and using our unique Borstar® technology, the company focuses on the infrastructure, automotive, and advanced packaging markets across Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. Borealis’ production facilities, innovation centers, and service centers work with customers in more than 120 countries to provide materi-als that make an essential contribution to society and sustainable development. The firm is committed to the principles of ‘Responsible Care’® and to leading the way in ’Shaping the Future with Plastics’™.

Within Borealis lies a centralized technology infrastructure geared to optimizing service delivery quality at the lowest cost. But however fast, however modern, or however efficient the technol-ogy infrastructure is, it hasn’t been able to put a restraint on the growth of email. On the one hand, this business critical application has played a key role in the success of Borealis; while on the other it has placed increased strain on storage management costs and availability.

Dirk Herbots, IT project leader, Borealis Polymers NV, takes up the story. “We faced a situation whereby staff were using their Exchange mailboxes as an complete ar-chiving system,” he explains. “When they had reached their space quota, they would often use their PST files as a small personal archive. In many instances, individual staff had PST files as large as two gigabytes. Over time, the PSTs were beginning to cor-rupt mailboxes―and we had a never-ending stream of calls to the help desk.”

Alarming growth in cost of managing email storage

At one point, almost 2.5 terabytes of PST files data was residing on the servers. This not only began to impact on the backup window; the cost of managing email storage began to grow to an unacceptable degree. “Although we operate a tightly centralized environment, our Exchange environment was previously dispersed across the Borealis sites across Europe. This meant that in Sweden for example, we were relying on lo-cal IT support staff to manage the crucial media management tasks.”

Recognizing that urgent action needed to be taken, Herbots and his team took two deci-sions: archive all Exchange email data to the central data centers in Belgium―and intro-duce Symantec Enterprise Vault. “Symantec was the only company I knew that offered an email archiving solution. That didn’t con-cern me, because their reputation was so strong in the market, and their archiving solution was so highly rated by analysts and the media, that we knew it was the right course of action to take,” he says.

Borealis is now using Symantec Enterprise Vault 7 software to archive email, file sys-tems data, and its Microsoft SharePoint environment. This intelligent single in-stance storage solution allows Borealis’ less-frequently used, unstructured informa-tion from high-cost disk and archive to lower cost storage. It also means the un-managed personal email messages and at-tachments―the notorious PST files―can be removed, allowing the team to regain con-

trol of the information within those files. Adding SharePoint data to Enterprise Vault helps by automatically archiving from docu-ment libraries, folders, and files. This means that Borealis is able to effectively introduce retention policies and reduce the storage costs associated with managing high vol-umes of the SharePoint electronic content.

savings approximately €10,000 per terabyte of storage

“Besides introducing a powerful and flexible archive for our unstructured information like SharePoint, Enterprise Vault is saving Borealis a considerable amount of money,” explains Herbots. “By archiving the data on low cost disk. When the data was stored on the fast disks, the total cost of ownership dropped with approximately €10,000 per terabyte.”

Enterprise Vault also leaves no stone un-turned in its endeavors to make life easy for the technical team. The software acts as a seamless extension to users existing tools―whether it’s Outlook, file systems, or Share-Point―giving visible access to archived in-formation. Admin-defined policies also automatically archive individual mailbox email and attachments from Exchange into the online Enterprise Vault stores. Shortcuts are also provided, allowing users to easily view or restore the original items transpar-ently. Single instance storage and compres-sion technologies further reduce the data footprint: Borealis estimates that in due course its storage capacity will reduce by 30 percent using Enterprise Vault.

Clearly, cost efficiency is at the forefront of the thinking at Borealis, and this helps ex-plain the more recent adoption of Symantec™ Endpoint Protection 11.0. The company’s McAfee security contract was up for re-newal, and instead of renewing it―along with another separate firewall contract―Borealis wanted an all-in-one solution. “Our experience with Symantec Enterprise Vault proves the merit of working with a top class company like Symantec. We were confident that their security technologies would be equally powerful; and it made more sense to replace the fragmented McAfee solution―which needed multiple interfaces―with one universal security solution,” says Herbots.

symantec endpoint Protection supports 5,250 nodes from a single agent

Integrating antivirus and firewall technolo-gies, Symantec Endpoint Protection has been live for three months and supports up to 5,250 nodes. Each of those nodes can be managed by a single agent through a single pane of glass; while stopping malware in its tracks. Dirk Mommaerts is an account man-ager at Uptime Group NV, the IT solutions partner that has been supporting Borealis with its Symantec implementations. He says, “Symantec Endpoint Protection gives Borealis the security it needs to protect the company’s endpoint environments against today’s threats while reducing the overall memory footprint. Borealis is exceptionally pleased with the solution.”

The Symantec relationship has also been extended into client management. The Altiris™ Client Management Suite is used for remote software deployment and imaging―an approach which reduces the costs asso-ciated with the firm’s Windows operating system deployments and software rollouts, while simultaneously minimizing the costs and time associated with troubleshooting and remediating client systems remotely. “Altiris does exactly what we expect it to do,” says Herbots. “Whether it’s imaging and deployment, or software and patch management, the solution takes it all in its stride.”
