Creative Curriculum for New Teachers Enduring Understanding

• The DoDEA Sure Start Program has adopted and uses researched-based curriculum system, The Creative Curriculum System for Preschool; all Sure Start teachers use this curriculum for instruction.

Outcomes By the end of the session, participants will have:

• Discussed key points of effective curriculum. • Identified the parts of the progressions for learning and development. • Had hands-on exploration of the components of The Creative Curriculum System for Preschool.

Set Up

• Have all files downloaded to the desktop or a DVD in advance. This includes the power point presentation, and all references used during this training. Rationale – the internet may not be available from the work station you are using during this training.

• Check the videos embedded on specific slides to assure they play properly and the volume is adjusted appropriately.

• Make ALL copies – See Handout Section of this document.

• Set up the room to assure your audience can work with an elbow partner and in a small group.

• On the table, have the blank copy paper, highlighters, markers, stickers and poster paper.

• You will need to determine how you will distribute copies throughout the training depending on the size of your group.

• You will need to set up a Parking Lot at the front of the room.

Key Points: The Creative Curriculum® for Preschool is a comprehensive, research-based curriculum designed to help educators at all levels of experience plan and implement a developmentally appropriate, content-rich program for children with diverse backgrounds and skill levels. The WHAT and WHY are explained in the 5 volumes which are THE FOUNDATION that build teacher’s professional knowledge of best practice. Vol 1- The Foundation Vol 2- Interest Areas Vol 3- Literacy Vol 4- Mathematics Vol 5- Objectives for Development and Learning: Birth through Kindergarten. The HOW is provided in the step-by-step guidance found in the Daily Reources. Daily Resources:

NAEYC’s definition of curriculum: The curriculum consists of knowledge, skills, abilities and understandings children are to acquire and the plans for learning experiences through which those gains will occur.

Key Points: • This is the curricular framework that is the

foundation for Creative Curriculum. • This provides the essential components of teaching

preschool children effectively and is grounded in research and theory.

• Each of the five components are covered in Volume 1: The Foundation.

Notes: How Children Develop and Learn: Volumes 1 & 5 Volume 1, Chapter 1: Discusses what preschool children are like and their individual differences to build knowledge base for planning your program, selecting material and guiding learning. Volume 5: Objectives for Development and Learning (ODLs): There are 38 objectives on a progression for all children birth through kindergarten, including two related to English language acquisition. These standards are research based, highly predictive of future school success and are reflective of widely accepted early learning standards The organization of Volume 5 includes areas of development and learning overview for each area, research foundation page, progression of development and learning and strategies for promoting children’s learning. KEY POINTS:

• The Objectives for Development and Learning are the DoDEA College and Career Ready Standards for Preschool. (CCRSP)

• Teaching Strategies GOLD online portfolio and assessment system is directly aligned to the curriculum.

Progressions of Development and Learning are : • Predictable, not rigid • Overlapping • Uneven • Interrelated

The ODL progression spans from birth to kindergarten. The colors are for each of life and kindergarten. The color bands show you at a glance what is typical for children in that age range.

Key Points: Knowing and understanding the progressions allow you to easily scaffold children’s learning. In volume 5, the Objectives for Development and Learning, the objectives 1-23 will appear like this (on screen). The following objectives address: Objectives 1-3 Social-Emotional Objectives 4-7 Physical (fine & gross motor) Objectives 8-10 Language Objectives 11-14 Cognitive Objectives 15-19 Literacy Objective 20-23 Mathematics Each objective has the following (noted by the blue arrows): Objective Dimension

Notes:

The second component of The Creative Curriculum Framework is the learning environment: the use and organization of the space in your classroom and outdoors, the structure you provide each day and the plans you develop.

A well-organized classroom helps children make choices, encourages them to use materials well, and teaches them to take increasing responsibility for maintaining the classroom. A well-balanced daily schedule gives children a sense of security and your plan enables you to plan for each day. (The Creative Curriculum for Preschool- Vol 1)

Volume 2: Interest Areas: The Creative Curriculum for Preschool requires a physical space be subdivided into Interest Areas.

There are 10 Interest Areas: Blocks Dramatic Play Toys and Games Art Library Discovery Sand and water Music and Movement (can be incorporated into the large group area if space is limited) Cooking Computers (optimally should be to incorporate into other interest areas)

KEY POINT:

All interest areas should have books and writing materials

Notes: What Children Learn is the third component of The Creative Curriculum framework. It covers what preschool children learn in the content areas of literacy, mathematics, science, social studies, the arts and technology. Chapter 3 of The Foundation describes the body of knowledge included in each content area and the process skills children use to gain that knowledge. It also explains how teachers integrate learning and make it meaningful to children by engaging them in studying topics of interest.

Volumes 3 & 4 focus specifically on Literacy and Mathematics The ODL/CCRSP are aligned to College and Career Ready Standards for kindergarten.

Notes: Caring and Teaching chapter 4 in Volume 1 emphases the classroom community, positive guidance, intentional and responsive teaching, and assessing children’s learning. Caring and teaching go hand and hand in promoting children's social-emotional skills, helping children to become competent, enthusiastic learners and ensuring that they our students have a positive school experiences. Partnering with Families is not only in The Creative Curriculum framework but also one of the Sure Start program standards. It is important for school and home to be connected in positive and respectful way so that



children feel safe and secure. Building partnerships with parents shows the importance and value of the family’s role in the child’s education. Chapter 5 in The Foundation address getting to know families, making families feel welcome, communicating with families, involving families in the program and responding to challenging situations. There is also a CD titled FAMILY CONNECTIONS that has Learning Games to share with families. There are also learning games and activities in Teaching Strategies GOLD that can be shared with parents as well.

The Daily Resources also known as the Studies Includes: Teaching Guides (10)- Extended studies of a topic Book Discussion Cards- show teachers how to conduct multiple effective read-alouds. (three read) Mighty Minutes- help cut out wasted time with songs, rhymes, games and short activities that make every minute a learning opportunity. Intentional Teaching Cards (ITC)- playful and engaging activities that can be used throughout the day. Coded M=Mathematics, LL=Language and Literacy, SE=Social-Emotional, P=Physical ITC- have a color-coded teaching sequence to meet the needs of all learners Support for English language learners Questions to guide observations

The teaching guides provide daily support for the entire school year. DoDEA has purchased 10 studies that teachers may use during the school year in any order. The studies vary in length and teachers will not be able to teach all of the studies in a year. The studies help teachers create a positive classroom community and fill every period of the day with meaningful learning experiences. The plans provided are comprehensive and cover several weeks. Even though the plans are compressive teachers have many opportunities to incorporate their own creativity and expertise.

successful routines and helping children be comfortable and find their place in the classroom community.
