UNDOCUMENTED YOUTH AND ADULT LEARNERS Undocumented  immigrants  are  those  who  do  not  fit  into  any  of  the  United  Sates’  legal  immigration  categories:  legal  permanent  residents,  legal  temporary  residents,  naturalized  citizens,  refugees  or  asylees.  This  group  may  have  many  questions  and  unique  obstacles  to  applying  for  and  paying  for  college.  There  are  resources  and  options  available  to  help  them  through  the  process.  Below  are  resources  and  activities  that  College  Positive  Volunteers  can  use  to  aid  in  promoting  post-­‐secondary  options  to  undocumented  learners!    UNDOCUMENTED STUDENTS NEED-TO-KNOW The  College  Board  has  a  home  page  of  helpful  tools,  Q  &  A’s  and  inspiring  stories  for  undocumented  students.  bigfuture.collegeboard.org/get-­‐started/for-­‐undocumented-­‐students   FINANCIAL AID This  annually  updated  government  resource  gives  information  about  how  individuals  should  document  their  citizenship  or  immigration  status  on  the  FASFA.  See  page  1-­‐26  to  view  the  criteria  for  being  considered  an  eligible  noncitizen:  ifap.ed.gov/fsahandbook/attachments/1415FSAHandbookCompleteActiveIndex.pdf    The  Federal  Student  Aid  website  has  compiled  financial  aid  resources  for  undocumented  youth  and  adults:  https://studentaid.ed.gov/sa/sites/default/files/financial-­‐aid-­‐and-­‐undocumented-­‐students.pdf    Certain  people  who  came  to  the  United  States  as  children  and  meet  several  guidelines  may  request  consideration  of  deferred  action  for  a  period  of  three  years.  This  deferral  will  protect  prevent  them  from  being  placed  in  any  removal  proceedings  or  being  removed  from  the  U.S.  for  a  specified  period  of  time.  For  more  information  on  the  Consideration  of  Deferred  Action  for  Childhood  Arrivals  (DACA),  watch  this  video:  http://www.uscis.gov/humanitarian/consideration-­‐deferred-­‐action-­‐childhood-­‐arrivals-­‐daca    VIDEO SERIES OF ADVICE FROM UNDOCUMENTED COLLEGE STUDENTS At  the  video  series  below,  you  can  learn  about  the  application  process,  college  vocabulary,  college  life,  an  overview  of  basic  rights,  and  more  advice!  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vLCW90GzEhQ ADVISING UNDOCUMENTED STUDENTS The  College  Board  has  compiled  resources  for  those  who  are  advising  undocumented  youth  or  adult  learners.  http://professionals.collegeboard.com/guidance/financial-­‐aid/undocumented-­‐students
