Some will manage their studies without too much difficulty, whereas others may need a bit of extra help along the way and our Learning Support team are on hand to help. GUIDE TO QUALIFICATIONS AND ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

NVQs (NATIONAL VOCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS)

NVQs are work-related qualifications concentrating on practical skills for industry.

You can train in your chosen career and get a recognised qualification in subjects like construction, exercise and fitness or hairdressing. There are three levels, so entry requirements vary according to the level you choose:

LEVEL 1 – FOUNDATION Foundation skills teaching you the basic skills you need to progress to the next level.

LEVEL 2 – INTERMEDIATE These are considered craft level meaning you can usually go into industry at this level. Equivalent to GCSEs at grade 9–4 (or grade C or above).

LEVEL 3 – ADVANCED These are advanced technician level courses and are the equivalent to two A Levels.

BTEC QUALIFICATIONS BTECs and similar vocational qualifications each focus on a particular type of work.

These are more practical courses, which prepare you for employment or Higher Education. BTECs are assessed through coursework and up to 25% external assessment. Entry grades vary according to the level of the course.

DIPLOMA LEVEL 1 These are one year courses, equivalent to gaining four GCSEs at grade 3. You would usually progress onto Level 2.

DIPLOMA LEVEL 2 These are one year courses, approximately equivalent to gaining four or five GCSEs at grade 9–4 (or grade C or above). These provide the skills you need for employment and you can usually join your chosen industry at this point.

DIPLOMA LEVEL 3 Taken over two years, the Diploma is equivalent to two A Levels, and the Extended Diploma to three A Levels. You are mostly assessed through assignments and a portfolio of work as well as teamwork. Many students progress to university and find their specialist knowledge gives them a head start.

GCSEs AND FUNCTIONAL SKILLS If you don’t already have a Level 2 qualification (GCSEs) in English and Maths then you can re-sit these at college.

If you need some more preparation you can study a Functional Skills course first. We have a team of specialist teachers who will support you to pass these subjects.

We are transitioning to new BTEC qualifications and therefore there maybe some variation between the qualifications offered at each college.


HIGHER EDUCATIONACCESS TO HIGHER EDUCATION (LEVEL 3) If you are returning to education after a long break or don’t have the relevant qualifications to start a Higher Education course right away, our Access to HE courses are designed to update your skills and prepare you for study at a higher level in just one year.

HIGHER EDUCATION (LEVELS 4, 5 & 6) At Langley College you have the benefits of gaining a university-level qualification right here on your doorstep. Offered with much lower fees than a university, you can progress from all levels right through to a Level 4/5 qualification which include Higher National Certificates (HNCs), Higher National Diplomas (HNDs), Foundation Degrees and Higher Apprenticeships.

WHO CAN DO AN APPRENTICESHIP?Apprenticeships are open to anyone over the age of 16.

Different apprenticeships have different entry requirements. You will be given an initial assessment to find the best route into your chosen apprenticeship.

You will need to be employed or have an employer who is ready to take you on as an apprentice. In many cases, we can help you find a suitable employer.

APPRENTICESHIPSApprenticeships are work-based training programmes, which combine training at the College with practical skills learnt in the workplace. Apprenticeships usually take between one and four years to complete depending on the level of apprenticeship, your ability and the industry sector.

WHAT LEVELS ARE THERE?Apprenticeships are available at various levels as follows:

INTERMEDIATE:These are Level 2 qualifications and are equivalent to GCSEs.

ADVANCED:These are Level 3 qualifications and are equivalent to A Levels.

HIGHER:These are Level 4 and 5 qualifications and are the equivalent of an HNC, HND or Foundation Degree (first two years of a degree).

DEGREE:These are Level 6 and 7 and are the equivalent of a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree.

Some apprenticeships may also give you an additional qualification, such as an NVQ and in some cases a relevant knowledge-based qualification (e.g. BTEC).

COURSE OVERVIEWThis course is designed for students who have passed Level 2 and for hairdressers in the industry that have a basic working knowledge of hairdressing. Once completed the you will be able to perform more technical services with skilled techniques and have the knowledge to tackle problems.

WHAT WILL I LEARN? The course consists of theory and practical work. You will need to complete eight units covering all aspects of advanced cutting, styling and colouring, including some aspects of colour correction. You will have the opportunity to produce and take part in a catwalk show and competitions.

• An NQF Level 3 qualification in a work-related area

At least two years’ experience of working within the Children’s Workforce, for example, in a registered early year’s setting or in a school as a Teaching Assistant.

Any candidate who does not fully meet the entry criteria (for example, who does not have Maths GCSE or the specified amount of full-time work experience but may have part-time and/or volunteering experience) is invited to submit their application, which will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

COURSE OVERVIEWThis course is for anyone who works with children and young people from 3–16 years (working in Children’s Centres, secondary school support staff, extended schools, health and social care and local authority practitioners and advisory staff) and wants to improve their skills and knowledge while staying in their current job. Foundation Degrees (FdA) are particularly appropriate if you are returning to learning after a break or have not gained your qualifications through the traditional school-based route. The course does not qualify you to teach (QTS), or confer the title of Early Years Professional, but is a ‘stepping-stone’ towards this status. This Foundation Degree is validated by the University of West London. Successful completion allows you to ‘top-up’ your qualification to a full BA Hons degree at one of our local universities: Bucks New University and the University of West London.

COURSE OVERVIEWIf English is not your first language, then this course is for you. We offer a vibrant ESOL study programme for 15–18 year olds, which will help you improve your English and help you progress into a range of jobs or further study.

WHAT WILL I LEARN?We are committed to helping you progress with your English and gain essential qualifications in Maths and ICT. At higher levels, your programme will include a vocational or academic subject plus work experience.

Our ESOL Department is well-known for its exciting use of technology in the classroom to ensure you are confident in using your English in everyday situations, both socially and in the workplace. We make learning fun with lots of interactive games, role-playing and events. Outside the classroom, you’ll have the chance to take part in a whole range of discussions and take part in educational trips. As you advance you can take part in complex debates as you progress and develop the more technical skills needed for some jobs, like report writing.

For those aged 15 years old, we work in partnership with Slough Borough Council and the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead to provide courses where appropriate.

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?You will work towards examinations in Speaking and Listening or Reading and Writing offered by Cambridge ESOL or Trinity College London. These are normally taken in January and June.

COURSE OVERVIEWThis course is validated and awarded by University College Birmingham and runs over two years (with an option to exit after one with a Certificate of Higher Education). The programme provides technical, hand-on skills and knowledge that is required in the workplace and is designed to enhance employability at supervisory to managerial level. It develops the expertise of those already working in hospitality and tourism, or those wishing to establish a career in this growing and diverse industry. You will focus on specific industries of your choice and will develop generic management skills in areas including marketing, human resources and finance.

STUDENTS AGED 16–18 You won’t need to pay any tuition or registration fees.

There may be costs for equipment for your course, if so you will be advised of this at interview.

STUDENTS AGED 19 AND OVERADVANCED LEARNER LOANS A government loan is available for those aged 19 and over (and resident in the UK) to help cover the costs of studying for a Level 3 qualification or above:

If you are aged 19–23: If you are studying for your first full Level 3 course you may be eligible for a free course (charges for course materials may still apply). If, however, you are already qualified at Level 3 or above and wish to study a course at Level 3 or above, you can apply for an Advanced Learner Loan to help cover the costs.

If you are aged 24 and over: You can apply for the Advanced Learner Loan to help cover the costs of studying for a Level 3 qualification or above (Access).

This loan can help cover all of the tuition fees for your course and will be paid directly to the College on your behalf. These loans are not means tested or credit checked and repayments will be less than a bank loan. You will only start to repay the loan once you have completed (or leave) the course and are earning more than £25,000 per year. What is more, if you undertake an Access to HE course your loan could be written off if you progress on to and complete a Higher Education course.

ADVANCED LEARNER LOAN BURSARY If you are in receipt of an Advanced Learner Loan (see above) and from a low income household, you may also be eligible for help with costs including childcare, travel and essential course materials via this bursary.

TUITION FEE LOANS FOR HIGHER EDUCATION You can apply for a Tuition Fee Loan to cover the cost of tuition fees for HNCs, HNDs or Foundation Degrees. This loan is not based on income and there is no upper age limit for applying. Repayments only start when you complete (or leave) the course and are earning over £25,000 per year. TRAVEL SCHEMEIf you are aged 16–18 and are enrolled on a full-time course, we offer a fantastic travel scheme in association with transport providers to help you save money on your travel costs.

TRAIN PASSThe College now offers a reduced fare train card in association with First Great Western to enable our students to save up to 50% on their rail travel. The train pass will entitle you to child fares on Great Western Railway train lines between Hanwell and Reading, including Southall, Maidenhead, Marlow, Windsor and Slough.

The part-subsidised card costs students just £30 per term (or £90 per year). However, those from low income households may be eligible for financial support to further reduce this cost.

BUS PASSThere are a number of bus route services in Langley, including First in Berkshire, Transport for London, Red Eagle Buses, Redline Buses, Thames Valley Buses, Courtney Buses.

We offer a reduced fare card in association with First Bus which will save you at least a third on bus travel. The bus pass will entitle you to child fares on any First Bus route serving Berkshire and the Thames Valley, including the Green Line London Coach Service. You can even use the pass on weekends and during college holidays, as well as on journeys to and from college.
