The Courier

Last week the AirmenoftheIdahoAirNationalGuard’s 124th FighterWing held a ceremony inBoisetodedicateanA-10CThunderboltIIaircraft tothetribesofIdaho. Historically,combatfly-ing squadrons used noseart(creativededicationstospecific people, places, or

concepts) to personalizecombataircraftandboostunitmorale.ArtworkwasinhighdemandduringWorldWar II, and extravagantcreationshighlightedunitprideandcohesion. Inthistradition,theUnit-edStatesAirForceallowsspecializedartworkforair-craftthatisdistinctiveandsymbolic to enhance unitmorale. “TheIdahoAirNationalGuardvalues itsrelation-shipwiththetribesofIda-ho,”saidMaj.Gen.GarySayler,commandinggen-eraloftheIdahoNationalGuard.“They’reakeypartofourcommunityandwewanttoacknowledgetheirlongstandingsupport.” Eventually, the 124th

Fighter Wing will dedi-catedeachoftheIdahoAirNationalGuardfighterjetsassigned to Gowen Field.ThisIdahoANGcommu-nityrecognitionprogramac-knowledgesthesupportandsacrificescommunitiesandcitizensmaketodefendfree-domathomeandabroad. Morethan1,300AirNa-tional Guardsmen fromacross Idaho support themission of the A-10Cthrough either full-timeorpart-timeparticipationinmilitaryreadinesstrain-ing.Theysupportboththefederalcombatmissionofthe124thFighterWingandthestateofIdaho’smilitarymissionasdirectedbythegovernorandledbythead-jutantgeneral.

StaggeredFood Stamps

Households receivingSupplementalNutritionAs-sistanceProgram(SNAP)benefits, also known asFood Stamps, will see achangewhentheirmonthlybenefitsbecomeavailableontheSNAPbenefitcard,alsocalledanElectronicBenefitTransfer(EBT)card. Currently, all SNAPrecipientsgetbenefitsonthe1stofthemonth.Un-der Staggered Issuance,the day that householdsget theirbenefitswillbespreadoutoverthefirst10daysofthemonth. Starting July 1, 2016,currentSNAPcardholderswillreceiveSNAPbenefitsaccordingtotheirassignedissuance date, which isbasedonthelastdigitofthecardholder’sbirthyear.Thismeans that most SNAPhouseholdswillnolongerreceivetheirbenefitsonthe1stofthemonth. Let me tell you a story aboutMontyBaker.Montywasagen-erous man. To his immediatefamilyhewasadevotedhusband,aproudfather,awarmfather-in-law,adelightedgrandfather.Hewasbelovedasason,brother,uncleandfriend.And,asmanycanattest,hewasfunny.Montyloved to laugh – and to makeotherslaugh.Hewasgenerouswithhishumor,hisloveandhisfriendship,andiftherewerea

wayhecouldhelpafriend,hewoulddoit. MontywasbornJanuary4,1937inBurley,Idaho.ThefamilymovedtoSanBruno,California,andhegradu-atedfromCapuchinoHighSchoolin1955.Helearnedtocountsheepinthestockyardswithhisfather,andthoughhedevelopedanamazingskill,heoftensaidthathecouldneverbeathisdadatcountingsheep. Asayoungman,Montytraveledthroughouteightstatesonthesheepcircuit,buyingandshippinglambs.OnacircuitthroughIdahoasasheepman,hemet“acattle-man’sdaughter,”JoyceHigley,andtheyweremarriedonemonthlateronFebruary9,1963.Theyenjoyeda“twoyearhoneymoon”travelingthewest,andeventuallysettledinGooding,Idaho.There,MontywouldbecomemanagerandpartnerinBlincoe’sMeatPackingHouse.MontywasontheboardofdirectorsofIdahoLivestockHalloffameformanyyears,andwasproudtobeinductedin2005. Whentheplantclosed,MontywenttoworkforReedGrain,whicheventuallyledtopositionswithSimplotandAgriSource.Healwaysenjoyedhiscoworkers,andhadmanygreatstoriesaboutthepracticaljokestheyplayedoneachother. Monty and Joyce welcomed son, Tom in 1965 anddaughter,Tanyain1971.GoodingwashometoMonty;heservedthecommunitythroughB.P.O.E.,Rotary,Jaycees,theHospitalBoard,theZoningBoardandtheboardofGoodingMethodistChurch.Helovedtheweekdaycof-fee/lotterycrew,andhewasproudtotellanyonehemetthathewasfromGooding,Idaho. Montylovedgolf,fishingandbowling,andlovedthesocialtimethosehobbiesbrought.Ashisfriendsandfam-ilycantellyou,Montylovedjokes–tellingthem,playingthemandrelayingthem!Andmostofall,hecouldnothave

Lamont“Monty”Baker beenprouderormorefullofloveforhischildrenandtheirfamilies.HelikednothingbetterthantospendtimewithTomandTanya,andwassohappytowelcomeAlissaandJohnintothefamily.Hisgranddaughtersbroughthimendlessjoy,andhewenttoeverysportsevent,concertandceremonyoftheirsthathecould. ManypeopleareleftbehindtomournMonty’spassing,includinghisbelovedwife,Joyce;children,TomBaker(AlissaRupp)andTanyaLayer(JohnLayer);preciousgranddaughters,CamrynandSydnee;sister,Patricia(Gil)Rodriguezandbrother,Willard(Rae)Baker,anduncle,JerryHawkins.Hewillbemissedbysister-in-law,JudyO’Donnell,andhisniecesandnephews–Tami,Tina,Brian,Gary,Cathie,Jerri,Cheryl,Renee,andChris–andtheirfamilies. Hewasprecededindeathbyhisbrother,JohnBaker;grandfather,C.C“Pop”Baker;parents,Hilla(Hawkins)andC.FlenoyBaker;in-laws,AlbertandLuRayneHigley;andbrother-in-law,anddearfriend,PatrickO’Donnell.Montywasbornonhismother’sbirthday–January4–anddiedonhisfather’sbirthday–June12. ThetirewasflatwhenIwasreadytogobacktheoppositedirection.Iscroungedupanairtanktogetairoutinthefieldtoairupmytire.Ihurriedbacktheoppositedirection.Latethatnight,whenIwasreadytoheadhome,thetirewasflatagain.Iagaingatheredupanairtanktoloadairinmytire. ThenextmorningIwasuptogotoworkbeforeanytireshopswereopenforrepairs.Mycompressormadethejourneyacrosstheyardtothecarforitssecondhelpingformycar’sleakingtire.BeforeIleftIgrabbedmypersonalairtankandloadeditformyreservewayhome. EachdayIwasworkingbeforetireshopopeningsandlaterthanclosingtime.Thepumpandfillsituationafterafewdayswaskindofapain. Oneofmyco-workerswasgoingtosellhis2002GrandAmPontiac-themotorwashavingheatissues.Hehadjustputnewtiresonthecar.Mycarwasatapointwhereitneededtiresallaround.WemadeadealandIboughtthecarcheaperthanIcouldbuynewtires.Icouldperhapsusesomemotorparts,shocksandstruts,formycar.Usingmycarforapickuphasdefinitelybrokethingsdown. Iaskedmyco-workertobringmeatireoffoftheoneIboughtfromhim.Goingtoworkearlyeverydaylimitedhistimeaswell.So,afteraweekofpumpingmytireeverytimeIwentsome-where,Idecidedtogetthetiremyselfafterwork.Myco-workerlivedinthedirectionofmyfirstday’slowtireexperience(40milesfromme).WhenIgottohisfreewayexit,itwasclosedforrepair.AtelevenatnightIendedupgoinganother15+milestogettohishouseviaanotherexit. OnceIgotthereIusedtheheadlightstotakeoffthetire.Thatwasokbutthecarwasparkedinpunctureweedsandthetirewascoveredwiththem.Naturally,Iwasthevictimofmultiplepunctureweedsinmyhands.Idecidednottochangemytiresaroundthere.IdrovebackintotownandproceededtochangemytirefortheoneIjustretrieved. Ibrokeofthelugboltsoffmycargettingmylowtireoff.Itriedtoputtheothertireonanditwouldn’tfit.Theboltpatternwasn’tthesame.Afriendhadtoldmetheyweretwodifferentchassisbecauseheresearchedandnoneoftheotherpartswouldfit.Iplacedmytirebackonandhadtofindairforit. Thisisacase“wherethemorethingsstaythesame,themoretheychange.” Thisismy“CupofTee”tire-redofchange.

RiverFest Backbypopulardemand,theWood River Land Trust’s Riv-erFest will once again takeplaceinHaileyontheFourthofJuly.Fillingthegapbe-tween the Hailey DaysoftheOldWestParadeand the evening rodeoand fireworks, the freeafternooneventisabighitwithfolksofallages. RiverFestbeginsaftertheparadeendsandrunsuntil5pm.It’sheldattheDraperWoodRiverPreserveandLionsParkinHailey.Andwhilehighflowsmakekeepfolksfromplayingintheriver,therewillbeplentytodoalongitsbanks.TherewillbeavarietyoffoodandcraftvendorsfromtheWoodRiversFarmersMarket,aswellasfreeicecream,andafreeraffleforaStandupPaddleBoard,includingalessonfromSunValley’sownSUPsuperstar,DannyWalton.
