Hyrumwasnotalone.Thelearningcurveonautoswasquitesteepformostoftheeldersofthatera.Justlikenow,whenwehavetohaveourgrandkidsteachushowtouseourphones.

IntheseventhgradeIfeltconfidentenoughtotrytowinthattriptoDisneyland,andItookoffonfoottosellsubscriptions.IknewGemCountyenoughtobeamapmakerbecauseIwalkedalotofmiles.EachtimeIgottoahouse,however,thereplywas“Sorrykid.I’vealreadyboughtfromsomeoneelse.”Theweeklypointsannouncedinthepapershowedmylackingsubscriptionsales,butIdidn’tgiveupandkeptwalking. Asthecontestnearedtheend,theleadinggirlhadenoughpointstolendmesomeandstillwin.Everyonegatheredatthenewspaperofficeontheclosingeveningtoheartheresultsfirsthand.Allofourscoreswereannouncedwithpointsinthenew,renewed,andoutofstatesubscriptions.IkeptthinkingIshouldfitintheresomewhere,ANDTHATIDID.Iendedupsixthfromthebottom.Igotanhonorablementionwithapictureinthepaper,andametalIdahoPotatobankfromIdahoFirstNationalBank. IneighthgradeIwasboundanddeterminednottoscorelikeIdidtheyearbefore.TenSpeedbicycleswereahotitemandIboughtmyselfonetocoverGemCounty,ANDTHATIDID.Irodethatbicycle,sometimeswithtwohand,sometimeswithone,andmostlywithnone.Boywhatanimprovement.Iwasbeatingkidsonfoottosubscriptionsales.Iwasabletogathernewonesaswellastherenewals.Theoutofstateonesrolledinnicelytoo.Competitionwastight;itsurelookedlikeIwasgoingtoDisneyland. Onceagaineveryonewasgatheredatthepaperofficetohearthewinnerannounced.Thingsweretense!Thewinnerwasannounced.Mynamewasn’tcalled.Itwasn’tcalledsecond,third,fourth,orevenfifth.Theremustbeamistake.Then,sixthfromthetop,wasTeeHurd.Hisprizewasabicycleandapictureinthepaper. Atoneofmyformerjobs,Iwasonceagaininthesamesitua-tion.Iputintwentyyearsofserviceandmynamewasmentionedinthecompanynewspaper.Ireceivedacatalogueofprizechoicesincludingthestandardwatches,calculators,rings,andbinoculars.Thenthereweretheabnormaloneslikeluggage,silverware,digitalcamerakit,golfclubs,and...abicycle.DidIsayabicycle?Ihadtoreadittwice.TwentyyearsgotmenotriptoDisneyland,butawaytoshowmilescovered.MychoicewasonlyfittingandTHATIDID. Thisismy“CupofTee”fortwofeet-twopedals.
