Air Force Clubs award $36,000 in scholarships
By Shannon Carabajal, AFCEC Public Affairs / Published June 28, 2017
T he Air Force Services Activity has
awarded $36,000 in scholarships to
10 Air Force Club members or their family
members.
The 2017 Air Force Club Scholarship
Program offered five scholarships to each
of two groups: traditional and non-
traditional. A traditional entrant is a 2017
high school graduating senior registered at
an accredited college or university. A
nontraditional entrant has received a GED
or graduated from high school and is
currently enrolled or registered at an
accredited college or university.
A panel of judges scored submissions,
written or video essays highlighting a time
when the applicant was tested to live up to
the Air Force core values of integrity first,
service before self and excellence in all we
do. “Every year, I am inspired by the
remarkable Air Force stories told through
the submissions we receive,” said
Jonathan Boyd, AFSVA club operations
branch chief.
This year AFSVA increased the award
amounts and number of awards within
each group. The first-place award winners
in each category receive a $7,000
scholarship; second place, $5,000; third
place, $3,000; fourth place, $2,000; and
honorable mention, $1,000.
There were 135 total submissions.

E ight U.S. Air Force installations were
selected as finalists for the Air Force
Innkeeper Award.
The award, managed by the lodging branch of
the Air Force Services Activity, recognizes inns
that provide the best hotel-type lodging and
customer service to Air Force travelers.
“The objective is to encourage innkeepers to
improve their management and operation of Air
Force lodging facilities at the 88 Air Force
installations worldwide, with the ultimate and
intended beneficiary being the customer,” said
Maj. Adam Baker, Air Force
Lodging chief.
Representing the large installa-
tion category, which consists of
286 bed spaces and higher, are
Davis-Monthan AFB, Arizona;
Eielson AFB, Alaska; Hurlburt
Field, Florida; and Incirlik AB,
Turkey. Dover AFB, Delaware;
Laughlin AFB, Texas; Mountain
Home AFB, Idaho; and Spangdahlem, AB, Ger-
many, represent the small installations.
Two teams are conducting evaluations in June
with winners to be announced late summer and
honored in November at the Air Force Lodging
Training Summit, MacDill AFB, Florida.
“The program promotes esprit de corps and
affords lodging managers and their teams the
opportunity to showcase mission sustaining
support operations to Air Force leadership,” said
Kevin Norton, AFSVA lodging recapitalization
chief. “The award promotes spirited competition
coupled with many new initiatives being adopted
across the portfolio as they are showcased to
the evaluation teams.”
The award’s emphasis is on celebrating the
success of nominees as they build and sustain
readiness and resiliency among Airmen and
their families, Baker said.
“Rest and relaxation starts with a great stay and
is important to every Airman,” the major said.
“Pushing for and celebrating excellence not only
benefits Air Force Inns, it promotes every family
and traveler having a great stay.”

F or many parents, finding quality child care
can be challenging but those at Luke Air
Force Base can be certain their children are
receiving the greatest care. Luke’s Child
Development
Center was
awarded the Air
Force's best
Child Develop-
ment Program of
the Year for
2016.
Luke’s CDC
competed
against 100 other
CDCs across the
Air Force and
this designation
took an above
and
beyond effort of
the whole team.
"This award
validates all of
the hard work that our CDC team delivers day in
and day out," said Matthew Driver, 56th Force
Support
Squadron Airman & Family Services flight chief.
"This award also confirms for our customers that
their children are truly cared for here at the
CDC."
Today the Luke CDC serves about 240 children
ranging from six weeks to five years old in 19
classrooms throughout the year, but it wasn’t
always that way.
“Over the past two years, the Luke CDC has
gone through a major quality transformation,”
Driver said. “Closed classrooms were
re-opened, classrooms and environments were
transformed, the child care waiting list process
was enhanced and program enrollment has
increased by 65 percent.”
Ensuring standards are met at the CDC takes
constant work and dedication.
“We have amazing caregivers who are here to
love and develop every child that comes through
our doors,” said Brenda Ricker, 56th Force
Support Squadron
CDC director.
“We’re working with
children and mold-
ing their future. The
feeling is
priceless.”
Airmen can have
peace of mind
knowing their
children are being
cared for and
continue the Wing
mission– building
the future of air
power.
“As the CDC flight
chief it’s my
pleasure to work
with a team of
ultimate
professionals who genuinely care about our chil-
dren,” Driver said. “Ricker and I shared a com-
mon dream and vision for the CDC and our staff
have run with that dream and made it reality.
The time that I and the CDC team have put into
the facility has been paid back tenfold by the
smiles and laughter of the children who we
serve.”
