Company D, (Fort Donelson Avengers), 35th Regiment, Mississippi Infantry
Raised in Winston County, Mississippi
Organized at West Point, MS in March of 1862
After leaving the camp of instructions at West Point, MS, the Company was ordered to Corinth and from there to
Tupelo, Iuka, Baldwyn, Pocahontas, Tennessee, and back to Corinth. They were engaged in the three day fight in
and around Corinth, where the Company sustained a heavy loss of killed and wounded. The 35th
Infantry Regiment
fought under General J. C. Moore at Corinth and lost 32 killed, 110 wounded, and 347 missing. Later the 35th
was
assigned to Hebert’s and Moore’s Brigade, Department of Mississippi and East Louisiana, and in February, 1863,
totaled 414 officers and men. From Corinth Company D retreated by way of Holly Springs and Grenada to
Vicksburg. Company D was in the siege of Vicksburg and was captured/surrendered on July 4, 1863 when
Vicksburg fell. During the siege the 35th
Regiment had 20 killed and 82 wounded. They were paroled on July 10,
1863. After being exchanged, the Company was reorganized on July 30, 1863 at Columbus, MS (the 35th
was
placed in Baldwin’s and Sear’s Brigade) and was ordered from there to Resaca, GA, thence to Viola Battery near
Mobile. From there they went by the way of Blue Mountain, Rome, Georgia, Calhoun, Atlanta, Lovejoy, and back
to the railroad and tore up the track and served throughout the Atlanta Campaign. The 35th
was in Tennessee with
Hood (Company D went to Tuscumbia and Nashville, where part of the Company was captured and sent to Camp
Douglas. The remainder of the Company returned to Mississippi and was furloughed for ten days after which they
reassembled in Mobile and aided in the defense of that area. Later, they were sent to Blakely, AL, where they were
captured and sent to Ship Island and placed under negro guards by whom they were cruelly treated. They were at
length sent to Vicksburg, paroled, and allowed to return home in May 1865. The 35th
Regiment sustained 20
casualties at New Hope Church, 36 at Kenesaw Mountain, 35 at the Chattahoochee River, and 47 in the battle of
Atlanta. The 35th
surrendered with the Department of Alabama, Mississippi, and East Louisiana. The field officers
were Colonel William S. Berry, Lieutenant Colonels Charles R. Jordon and Reuben H. Shotwell, and Majors T. F.
Holmes and Oliver C. Watson.
