Nightfall with Edgar Allan Poe Wednesday, October 30, 2013 • 10:00 AM and 12:00 NoonGrades 6-12Edgar Allan Poe stands alone in the flickering darkness of his mind, trying desperately to convince himself – and us – that he’s not mad. From his troubled mind spring three brilliant tales that Poe himself considered among his best: “The Raven,” “The Fall of the House of Usher” and “The Tell-Tale Heart.” Adapted by award-winning playwright Eric Coble, Nightfall captures both the poetry and the spine-chilling terror of Poe’s originals. This performance showcases haunting and highly theatrical staging from one of America’s greatest authors who is a true master of the macabre.

Johnny Appleseed Thursday, November 7, 2013 • 10:00 AM and 12:00 NoonGrades 2-5John Chapman, better known as Johnny Appleseed, was born in Massachusetts, less than nine months before and 42 miles away from the Battle of Bunker Hill. His father was a minuteman at Concord and served in the Continental Army during the American Revolution. Johnny and his new country grew up together, and he became a genuine folk hero when the “Wild West” was still Ohio. The apple orchards he planted throughout Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana and Illinois played a major role in the settlement of our nation. This rousing, funny new frontier musical is part rollicking adventure, part inspiring history and 100% All-American.

CLASSROOM RESOURCESOur commitment is to help you connect Clowes Hall programs to your classroom, school and district-wide curriculum. We realize participating in any program requires lesson planning and preparation. We recommend the following resources to prepare for your arts experience.

Freedom Train - A Story That Speaks To All PeopleUp creek beds, through swamps, over hills and through dark and
dangerous wooded areas is how the slaves, led by “conductors,”
escaped to the North. The most famous “conductor” on the
Underground Railroad was Harriet Tubman. After escaping from
slavery herself in 1849, she returned to the South again and again,
at great risk, to lead others to freedom. Thus, she earned the title
“Moses.”Freedom Train tells the story of a very courageous woman who
risked everything to lead more than 300 slaves to freedom. This
heroic story is a musical and portrays themes of courage, dedication,
equality, survival, and most important, love. Do you think you could
have done the same as Harriet Tubman? Could you have made the
same decisions to escape to the North and risk your life to help
others escape, too?Get ready to see a powerful story on the Clowes Hall Stage and
relive history as you may have never done before!Know the CodeThere are a lot of words you need to become familiar with in
order to understand the play. Here is a list of some words you
would have heard and used if you lived in the 1800’s.
Abolitionist: a person who supported the movement to abolish
or end slaveryBounty Hunter: a person who tracks down and captures
outlaws in return for a rewardConductors: people who directly transported runaways
Drinking Gourd: a code term for the North Star
Fugitive: a person who flees; a runawayFugitive Slave Laws: a number of laws that regulated the
return of slaves who had escapedGo Free: a code word used by slaves for escape
Heaven: a code word used by slaves for Canada
Mason-Dixon Line: the boundary between Maryland and
Pennsylvania that was known as the border between the slave
states of the South and the free states of the North
Operator: a person who helped runaway slaves by hiding them
in their homes and/or providing foodQuakers: members of a religion called the Society of Friends
Safe Houses: a term used by the Underground Railroad to
describe houses belonging to people involved in helping slaves
escapeUnderground Railroad: not a real railroad and not
underground - a term used to describe the network of people
who helped slaves escape to freedom

You Will See a Beloved Story
About FriendshipCharlotte’s Web is a wonderful and funny story about
friendship. The story takes place on a farm when an
eight-year-old girl named Fern rescues a pig who is
called the “runt of the litter.” Fern takes care of the
pig whom she calls Wilbur, until he grows bigger
and stronger. Then, Wilbur is sent to her Uncle
Zuckerman’s farm. At this farm, Wilbur starts to feel
alone and friendless. Along comes a spider named
Charlotte who knows what may happen to Wilbur
if she doesn’t come up with a plan to help Wilbur
from an awful tragedy. Charlotte and Wilbur develop
a wonderful friendship on Zuckerman’s farm as
Charlotte schemes to save Wilbur’s life!
Live Actors Perform On Stage
at Clowes HallGet ready to see live actors pretending to be the main characters in Charlotte’s Web at Clowes Memorial
Hall. Seeing a live performance is much different than watching television or a movie. The actors will perform
on a stage right in front of you at the same time you are in the auditorium. You will be part of the audience,
which means you will need to watch quietly from your theater seat, listen carefully, and respect your friends
around you by not talking aloud. Everyone will want to enjoy this play and the actors will want to do their best
acting job for you. We are so glad you are coming to Clowes Hall to see Charlotte’s Web! We know you will
have fun and enjoy the performance!
Reading E.B. White’s Book Will Prepare You For This Play
As a class or at home read together E.B. White’s book Charlotte’s Web. This is a chapter book that is a story of
true friendship. Knowing the characters, the setting, and the story’s events will make you a very smart audience
member!

This workshop is based on the concept that manipulation of basic shapes and forms, without the use of patterns, inspires student creativity and confidence. Join Carolyn Owens, Artist Educator, for this fun and participatory experience.
