Quantumcomputing isatan inflectionpoint,where72-qubit(quantumbit)machinesarebeingtested,100-qubitmachinesare justaroundthecorner,andeven1000-qubitmachinesareperhapsonlya fewyearsaway.Thesemachineshavethepotentialtofundamentallychangeourconceptofwhatiscomputableanddemonstratepracticalapplicationsinareassuchasquantumchemistry,optimization,andquantumsimulation.Yetasignificantresourcegapremainsbetweenpracticalquantumalgorithmsandrealmachines.Thekeytoclosingthisgapistodeveloptechniquestospecializealgorithmsforhardwareandviceversa.Quantumcomputingistheultimatevertically-integrateddomain-specificapplication,andcomputerengineersaresorely needed to tackle grand challenges that include programming language design, software andhardwareverification,debuggingandvisualizationtools,definingandperforatingabstractionboundaries,cross-layer optimization, managing parallelism and communication, mapping and schedulingcomputations,reducingcontrolcomplexity,machine-specificoptimizations,learningerrorpatterns,andmanymore.Iwillalsodescribetheresourcesandinfrastructureavailableforstartingresearchinquantumcomputingandfortacklingthesechallenges.

Fred Chong is the Seymour Goodman Professor in the Department ofComputer Science at the University of Chicago. He is also Lead PrincipalInvestigator for the EPiQC Project (Enabling Practical-scale QuantumComputing),anNSFExpeditioninComputing.ChongreceivedhisPh.D.fromMITin1996andwasafacultymemberandChancellor’sfellowatUCDavisfrom1997-2005.HewasalsoaProfessorofComputerScience,DirectorofComputer Engineering, and Director of the Greenscale Center for Energy-EfficientComputing atUCSB from2005-2015.He is a recipientof theNSFCAREER award and 6 best paper awards.
