Welcome
Welcome to the inaugural ULI Resilience Summit: Climate Risk and Resilience in Real Estate, an exclusive event focused on preparing ULI members for the impacts of climate change and enhancing the resilience of real estate projects, investments, communities, and cities.
Climate change has led to more frequent and intense weather events, as well as chronic risks like sea level rise, extreme heat, and drought. These risks create complex challenges that put people, businesses, and property at risk. Failure to address and mitigate such risks will threaten the built environment and economy in ways that have serious consequences for the health, viability, and economic vitality of our communities.
Today, we will hear from global leaders from the real estate, land use, and urban policy sectors who are taking action to better prepare for climate impacts. Their lessons provide opportunities for ULI members to learn and adjust their approaches to real estate investment, development, and city policy for climate mitigation and adaptation. These strategies have the potential not only to prepare and protect assets and communities from extreme weather events and chronic threats, but also to build value and create other social benefits.
This year’s Resilience Summit marks the fifth anniversary of the establishment of ULI’s Urban Resilience Program and its first convening on the topic, the Building the Resilient City conference. Today, we will reflect on progress made within the industry over the past five years, discuss how to further protect communities and investments from climate impacts, and identify innovative approaches to climate risk to inform decision-making for a more resilient future.
Thank you for joining us today. Please feel free to follow up with us about ways to continue to get involved with this important issue at ULI.

Event Program
12:15 p.m. Lunch
1:15 p.m. Concurrent Sessions and Tours
Participants join one of the following three program tracks:
Track 1: Climate, Health, and Public Space Solutions
Making connections among climate change, health, and public spaces, this track will present strategies to enhance resilience and community well-being through thoughtful design approaches. An esteemed lineup of experts from public health, policy, community organizing, and design will share successful project examples and evidence-supported opportunities to enhance health and sustainability through public space and other built environment investments. Track participants will take a guided walking tour of the nearby Canal Park.
Panel: Enhancing Health and Resilience through Parks
Tour: Canal Park
Track 2: Net Zero Hero: Adapt, Mitigate, Decarbonize
Net-zero energy (NZE) buildings are increasingly making headlines for their potential to be a new model for a changing climate. While NZE development may not be the status quo (yet), leaders in the market understand the importance of rapidly adapting to the changing climate, mitigating impacts, and analyzing how their portfolios can achieve higher levels of decarbonization. Attendees will explore how decarbonization intersects with climate adaptation; hear about D.C.’s only NZE building, the American Geophysical Union office; and tour DC Water’s new LEED Platinum-rated building.
Panel: Climate Mitigation and Energy-Efficient Assets
Tour: DC Water Headquarters
1:15 p.m. Track 3: Resilient Coastal Development Best Practices
Waterfronts are often cities’ most vulnerable and valuable sites. From the waterfront site of the Resilience Summit, learn about leading waterfront real estate projects and city initiatives that integrate resilience into policy and design standards. What needs to be considered when revising design guidelines for waterfront sites in a coastal city? What data are used to determine new guidelines? How have real estate developers responded to these standards and delivered valuable products? Hear from leading practitioners and tour Buzzard Point, D.C.’s newest waterfront district.
Panel: Shaping the Waterfront: City Policies for Coastal Development
Tour: Buzzard Point
3:15 p.m. Resilience on D.C.’s Waterfront
Uwe Brandes, Professor of Practice & Facility Director, Urban & Regional Planning Program, Georgetown University (Moderator)
